L'histoire du judaïsme ancien est l'exemple Où l'on voit le mieux l'opp05ition des questions politiques et des questions sociales. Les penseurs d'israël sont les premiers qui se révoltèrent contre l'injustice du monde, qui refusèrent de subir les inégalités, les abus, les privilèges sans lesquels il n'y a ni armée ni société forte. Ils compromirent l'existence de leur petite nationalité, mais fondèrent l'édifice religieux qui, sous le nom de judaïsme, de christia nisme, d'islamisme, a servi d'abri à l'humanité jusqu'à ce jour. Il y a là une leçon que les peuples modernes ne sauraient assez méditer. Les nations qui se livreront aux questions sociales périront; mais, si l'avenir appartient à de pareilles questions, il sera beau d'ètre mort pour la cause destinée à triompher. Tous les gens sensés de Jérusalem, vers l'an 500 avant J ésus Christ, étaient furieux contre _les prophètes, qui ren daient impossibles toute action militaire, toute diplo matie. Quel dommage, cependant, si ces fous sublimes avaient été arrètés! Jérusalem y eût gagné d'ètre un peu plus longtemps la capitale d'un insignifiant.
