Ces soins sont destinés à retarder la décomposition et à permettre aux proches d’organiser sereinement les funérailles. Ils ne visent pas à conserver les corps indéfiniment, ce que la loi ne permet d’ailleurs pas.Entre ces deux régimes de conservation, le XIXe siècle offre une parenthèse singulière. C’est dans sa première moitié que naît et s’affirme l’embaumement romantique : un désir éperdu de préserver des corps éternellement intacts, revendiqué comme un aspect légitime du culte des morts et inséparable de l’apparition du cimetière moderne et de ses concessions perpétuelles. L’embaumement connaît alors une vogue aussi extraordinaire que brève, et amorce une diffusion sociale dans la bourgeoisie urbaine. Mais cet engouement suscite aussi une concurrence féroce entre médecins et non-médecins qui se disputent le marché du corps des défunts dans une guerre à la fois technique, commerciale, socioprofessionnelle et déontologique.C’est l’histoire de cette passion mortuaire, de sa naissance, de son épanouissement et de son déclin que l’ouvrage d’Anne Carol entend restituer sous un angle social et culturel, et en la replaçant dans l’histoire plus large des sensibilités collectives face à la mort et au cadavre.
