Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Crusades, Vol. 1 of 3 And we unhesitatingly claim a place among these for that which we are about to lay before the public. It were super uous to speak of the advantages derived from the science to which it belongs; and there can be no doubt that the Crusades form one of the most important sections of human history; not only instructive, but extraordinary; supplying abundance of edifying matter to the statesman, the philosopher, the poet, the novelist, and the citizen. If it be true that no page of history should be considered as a blank to the statesman, which leaf of her vast volume can he turn with much more promise of instruction? He will behold men, of powerful and ambitious minds, seizing upon the worst passions of various ages, - superstition, cupidity, and cruelty, - and wielding the energies of incredible multi tudes, in endeavours to work out their own ends and views. Many an invaluable lesson may he gather from the want of foresight, prudence, knowledge, and unanimity dis played in these astonishing enterprises whilst the causes of numerous effects now in Operation may be plainly traced to these eventful periods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crusaders, Vol. 1 of 2: Or, Scenes, Events, and Characters, From the Times of the Crusades Tn: present work, as is sufficiently indicated by its title, is not designed to be a regular history of the Crusades. It is a picture of manners rather than a narrative of events. The object proposed has been to set before the view of the reader, as clearly as the existing documents permit, the Crusa ders, the Greeks, the Turks, and the Saracens, of the twelfth century, as they lived, thought, and acted. Hence there will be found much more of anecdote in the following pages than is per haps consistent with legitimate historic narrative. Discussion has been avoided as being unsuitable to a work of this kind, and reflections are intro duced only where they seem to be required, and vpresented themselves naturally. The narration, 5 though not laying claim to the rank of history, is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Literature of the Crusades The first part of the work now submitted to the public, is a translation of the lectures delivered at Munich; the second part is taken from the preface to his History of the First Crusade, published in 1841 and consists of an elaborate criticism on the various original authorities in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and on the later historians of the Crusades, down to the present time. There exists, we believe, no such critical examination of the ori ginal authorities in any other language. The refer ences to them in Mills's History of the Crusades are somewhat meagre; while\ Michaud, although in his Bibliotheque des Croisades he has given ample extracts, has nowhere subjected the originals to the rigorous and minute analysis they undergo at the hands of the German Professor. The first impulse to a critical examination of the original authorities of the First Crusade was given by Professor Ranke in his Historical Exercises He began with the first books of William of Tyre, which he proved to be merely a repetition of earlier accounts by Albert of Aix, Ray mond of Agiles, and from the 'gesta Francorum.' He then examined Albert of Aix, whose work he considered to be derived chiefly from oral tradition. Professor Ranke's other avocations prevented his pursuing this subject any further; but sufficient was done to clear the way for other historical stu dents; and v. Sybel has carried out the method of his eminent teacher. The narrative of the First Crusade, as given by Mills and other modern historians, v. Sybel re gards as a mingled mass of truth and falsehood, of history and legend, founded chiefly on the account of William of Tyre. William of Tyre wrote in 1170, and with much that was valuable, he mixed tales borrowed from Albert of Aix The general character of the work is thought by the German Professor to be poetical and legendary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we can walk into any well-stocked bookstore or library and find an array of historical atlases. The first thorough review of the source material, Historical Atlases traces how these collections of "maps for history"—maps whose sole purpose was to illustrate some historical moment or scene—came into being. Beginning in the sixteenth century, and continuing down to the late nineteenth, Walter Goffart discusses milestones in the origins of historical atlases as well as individual maps illustrating historical events in alternating, paired chapters. He focuses on maps of the medieval period because the development of maps for history hinged particularly on portrayals of this segment of the postclassical, "modern" past. Goffart concludes the book with a detailed catalogue of more than 700 historical maps and atlases produced from 1570 to 1870. Historical Atlases will immediately take its place as the single most important reference on its subject. Historians of cartography, medievalists, and anyone seriously interested in the role of maps in portraying history will find it invaluable.
