Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Charles Seignobos, a French historian and Doctor of Letters of the University of Paris, originally released this book in France, titled "Histoire de la Civilisation." With the success and widespread use of his work in France, particularly in schools, it was thought that this would be a good resource for students in other countries, especially in the U.S. Thus, this English translation, aptly named "History of Ancient Civilization," came to be published in 1906. This 391-page, 27-chapter volume begins its exposition with prehistoric times and concisely discussed the four ages and ends with the later empire and the organization of the Church. The author managed to distill the important aspects of various periods in history, which adds to the academic appeal of this edition. Grade school and secondary level students will find this an easy read as the writing style is straightforward, using uncomplicated sentence structures and words. It also helps that the information the book contains is divided in short paragraphs with headings in bold letters. As such, it's easy for readers to search for certain passages. This shows that this is a work designed to be used as a reference material. Many of the titles published at the turn of the century did not make much use of the divisions that Professor Seignobos employed. Aside from students, those who are interested in history or want to revisit the origins of modern civilization as a recreational activity will enjoy reading "History of Ancient Civilization." Book excerpt: Michel Foucault examines the archeology of madness in the West from 1500 to 1800 - from the late Middle Ages, when insanity was still considered part of everyday life and fools and lunatics walked the streets freely, to the time when such people began to be considered a threat, asylums were first built, and walls were erected between the "insane" and the rest of humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carroll Quigley was a legendary teacher at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. His course on the history of civilization was extraordinary in its scope and in its impact on students. Like the course, The Evolution of Civilizations is a comprehensive and perceptive look at the factors behind the rise and fall of civilizations. Quigley examines the application of scientific method to the social sciences, then establishes his historical hypotheses. He poses a division of culture into six levels from the abstract to the more concrete. He then tests those hypotheses by a detailed analysis of five major civilizations: the Mesopotamian, the Canaanite, the Minoan, the classical, and the Western. Quigley defines a civilization as "a producing society with an instrument of expansion." A civilization's decline is not inevitable but occurs when its instrument of expansion is transformed into an institution--that is, when social arrangements that meet real social needs are transformed into social institutions serving their own purposes regardless of real social needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on the Aksumite state of the first millennium AD in northern Ethiopia and southern Eritrea, its development, florescence and eventual transformation into the so-called medieval civilisation of Christian Ethiopia. This book seeks to apply a common methodology, utilising archaeology, art-history, written documents and oral tradition from a wide variety of sources; the result is a far greater emphasis on continuity than previous studies have revealed. It is thus a major re-interpretation of a key development in Ethiopia's past, while raising and discussing methodological issues of the relationship between archaeology and other historical disciplines; these issues, which have theoretical significance extending far beyond Ethiopia, are discussed in full. The last millennium BC is seen as a time when northern Ethiopia and parts of Eritrea were inhabited by farming peoples whose ancestry may be traced far back into the local 'Late Stone Age'. Colonisation from southern Arabia, to which defining importance has been attached by earlier researchers, is now seen to have been brief in duration and small in scale, its effects largely restricted to élite sections of the community. Re-consideration of inscriptions shows the need to abandon the established belief in a single 'Pre-Aksumite' state. New evidence for the rise of Aksum during the last centuries BC is critically evaluated. Finally, new chronological precision is provided for the decline of Aksum and the transfer of centralised political authority to more southerly regions. A new study of the ancient churches - both built and rock-hewn - which survive from this poorly-understood period emphasises once again a strong degree of continuity across periods that were previously regarded as distinct. David W. Phillipson is Emeritus Professor of African Archaeology and former Director of the University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, Cambridge. In 2014 he was made an Associate Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. Published in association with the British Institute in Eastern Africa. Ethiopia: Addis Ababa University Press
