Book Synopsis The Institutions of France Under the Absolute Monarchy, 1598-1789, Volume 1 by : Roland Mousnier
Download or read book The Institutions of France Under the Absolute Monarchy, 1598-1789, Volume 1 written by Roland Mousnier and published by Chicago : University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1979-11 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political and administrative institutions cannot be understood unless one knows who is operating them and for whose benefit they function. In the first volume of this history, Mousnier analyzes such institutions in light of the prevailing social, economic, and ideological structures and shows how they shaped life in 17th- and 18th-century France. He traces the changing role of monarchical government, showing how it emerged over two centuries and why it failed. In a society divided by hierarchical social groups, conflicts among lineages, communities, and districts became inevitable. Aristocratic disdain, ancestral attachment to privileges, and autonomous powers looked upon as rights, made civil unrest, dislocation, and anarchy endemic. Mousnier examines this contention between classes as they faced each other across the institutional barriers of education, religion, economic resources, technology, means of defense and communication, and territorial and family ties. He shows why a monarchical state was necessary to preserve order within this fragmented society. Though it was intent on ensuring the survival of French society and the public good, the Absolute Monarchy was unable to maintain security, equilibrium, and cooperation among rival social groups. Discussing the feeble technology at its disposal and its weak means of governing, Mousnier points to the causes that brought the state to the limits of its resources. His comprehensive analysis will greatly interest students of the ancien régime and comparativists in political science and sociology as well.

Download or read book Lettres de Cachet and Social Control in the Ancien Régime, 1659-1789 written by Brian Eugene Strayer and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lettres de cachet, one of many social control mechanisms of Old Regime France, needs reassessment today after two centuries of distorted interpretations portraying these royal arrest warrants as symbols of despotism. In reality, these private ordres du roi were preventive measures to control deviant elements in society (juvenile delinquents, prostitutes, the insane, etc.). These ordres enabled the King, police, and parents to preserve family honor, enforce socially acceptable behavior, and prevent crimes embarrassing to the family and disruptive to social harmony. This book examines the legal and administrative framework, police methods and procedures, family problems and concerns, and the actual lifestyles of inmates at some of the foremost carceral institutions of 17th and 18th century Paris from 1650 to 1789.

Book Synopsis Minerva's Message by : Martin S. Staum
Download or read book Minerva's Message written by Martin S. Staum and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996-10-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In theory the CMPS was set up to enshrine the human and social studies that were at the heart of Enlightenment culture. Staum illustrates, however, that the Institute helped transform key ideas of the Enlightenment in order to maintain civil rights while upholding social stability, and that the social and political assumptions on which it was based affected notions of social science. He traces the careers of individual members and the factions within the Institute, arguing that the discord within the CMPS reflects the unravelling of Enlightenment culture. Minerva's Message presents a valuable overview of the intellectual life of the period and brings together new evidence about the social sciences in their nascent period.
Download or read book Alzire written by Voltaire and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alzire first appeared on the stage in 1736 to great acclaim and success. Alzire is set Lima, Peru, at the time of the Spanish conquest. Don Gusman, a Spanish grandee, has just succeeded his father, Don Alvarez, in the Governorship of Peru. The rule of Don Alvarez had been beneficent and just; he had spent his life in endeavoring to soften the cruelty of his countrymen; and his only remaining wish was to see his son carry on the work which he had begun. Unfortunately, however, Don Gusman's temperament was the very opposite of his father's; he was tyrannical, harsh, headstrong, and bigoted. It is in vain that Don Alvarez reminds his son that the true Christian returns good for evil and as a result tragedy insues. Wilder Publications is a green publisher. Book Synopsis Divine Names on the Spot by : Fabio Porzia
Download or read book Divine Names on the Spot written by Fabio Porzia and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ancient Greek and Semitic languages resorted to a large range of words to name the divine. Gods and goddesses were called by a variety of names and combinations of onomastic attributes. This broad lexicon of names is characterised by plurality and a tendency to build on different sequences of names; therefore, the Mapping Ancient Polytheisms project focuses on the process of naming the divine in order to better understand the ancient divine in terms of a plurality in the making. A fundamental rule for reading ancient divine names is to grasp them in their context - time and place, a ritual, the form of the discourse, a cultural milieu...: a deity is usually named according to a specific situation. From Artemis Eulochia to al-Lat, al-'Uzza and Manat, from Melqart to "my rock" in the biblical book of Psalms, this volume journeys between the sanctuary on Mount Gerizim and late antique magical practices, revisiting rituals, hymnic poetry, oaths of orators and philosophical prayers. While targeting different names in different contexts, the contributors draft theoretical propositions towards a dynamic approach of naming the divine in antiquity.'
Book Synopsis French Revolution by : Pierre Gaxotte
Download or read book French Revolution written by Pierre Gaxotte and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Revolution, though it profoundly stirred the imagination of the French people, was not so cataclysmic, nor so immediate and widespread in its effects as the events that broke out thirteen years later in France. The French Revolution provoked a deep cleavage within society that it later exported to most of Europe. France's Communists hold Robespierre, the instigator of the Terror, as one of their inspirations while Gaxotte, writing in the 1920s, viewed Communism as the logical heir to the Revolution. Many contemporary historians appear far closer to Gaxotte in their more realistic portrayals of those events than to the innumerable Marxist scholars who preceded them.
Book Synopsis The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu by : Maurice Joly
Download or read book The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu written by Maurice Joly and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joly's (1831-78) Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu is the major source of one of the world's most infamous and damaging forgeries, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. That, however, was concocted some two decades after he died, and American political scientist Waggoner points to Joly's own text for evidence that he was not anti-semitic and was an intransigent enemy of the kind of tyranny the forgery served during the 1930s. He translates the text and discusses Joly's intentions in writing it and his contribution to the understanding of modern politics. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
