Book Synopsis The Role and Experiences of Hispanic Soldiers During the World War II Era by : Debra L. Fix
Download or read book The Role and Experiences of Hispanic Soldiers During the World War II Era written by Debra L. Fix and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the role and experiences of the United States Army Hispanic soldier during the World War II era. Historians have largely overlooked the participation of Hispanic soldiers in recording the history of the nation's major wars, in particular, World War II (WW II). This study focuses on Hispanic contributions to the nation's defense from the American Revolution up to World War II; the roles and contributions of Hispanic supporters on the home front in the communities and the war industries; and the personal experiences of two Hispanic World War II veterans, one male and one female soldier. This study reinforced that Hispanic Americans are an amalgamation of diverse ethnic heritages bound together by a common culture and language. Hispanic Americans include: Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central and South Americans. They are all American citizens; however, their contributions to military history are largely undocumented and unknown to most Americans. The study concludes that because Hispanics largely served in integrated units they did not face overt discrimination. There were no institutional limitations to their service. They contributed honorably on the home front and in the service of their country. Their smooth assimilation into the service contributed to a lack of focus and attention to their contributions and experience as a separate and unique ethnic group.

Book Synopsis Hispanic Representation in the Department of Defense Civilian Workforce by : Miriam Matthews
Download or read book Hispanic Representation in the Department of Defense Civilian Workforce written by Miriam Matthews and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hispanics are less represented in the federal government workforce than in the U.S. civilian labor force, and they are particularly underrepresented in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) civilian workforce. Although previous analyses have demonstrated that Hispanics are underrepresented in DoD, research has not yet considered employment barriers for Hispanics across DoD agencies. In this report, the authors provide information that might help DoD address Hispanic underrepresentation in its civilian workforce. They examine trends in Hispanic employment in the DoD, non-DoD federal, and civilian workforces. They also explore whether DoD labor-force characteristics might account for Hispanic underrepresentation in DoD. In addition, the authors examine observed trends in job applicants and applications to DoD. They also present findings from interviews that they conducted with DoD hiring managers and supervisors and representatives of Hispanic-serving institutions. They conclude with recommendations for DoD to consider as part of its efforts to address Hispanic underrepresentation in the DoD civilian workforce"--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis What Factors Affect the Military Enlistment of Hispanic Youth? by : Beth J. Asch
Download or read book What Factors Affect the Military Enlistment of Hispanic Youth? written by Beth J. Asch and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ongoing concern of Congress, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the armed services is the social representation of the military, particularly of active duty accessions. Hispanics are a growing segment of the youth population yet have been underrepresented historically among military accessions. The widely cited reason is their below-average rate of graduation from high school and the services2 preference for diploma graduate recruits. But other less-studied factors may contribute. These other possible factors may include lack of language proficiency as reflected in their applicant aptitude test scores, fertility choices, health factors such as obesity, and involvement in risky activities such as the use of illegal drugs. These factors could adversely affect the ability of some Hispanic youth to meet service enlistment standards. The RAND Corporation project 3Hispanic Youth in the United States and the Factors Affecting Their Enlistment4 is conducting an analysis of the factors that lead to the underrepresentation of Hispanic youth in the military. This documented briefing summarizes interim results from the research effort2s first year. First, it highlights the various enlistments standards recruits must meet in each branch of service. Then using available data on American young adults, it summarizes the degree to which Hispanic youth qualify for service relative to youth who are members of other racial and ethnic groups. This documented briefing is intended for individuals interested in military recruiting and in the population representation of personnel in the armed forces.

Book excerpt: An ongoing concern of Congress, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the armed services is the social representation of the military. As there is virtually no lateral entry, a key concern in particular is the social representation of active duty accessions. Book Synopsis In Defense of My People by : Michael A. Olivas
Download or read book In Defense of My People written by Michael A. Olivas and published by Hispanic Civil Rights (Hardcov. This book was released on 2012 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential Mexican Americans of his time, Alonso S. Perales (1898-1960) is the subject of this engrossing collection of scholarly essays. A graduate of George Washington University School of Law, he was one of the earliest Mexican-American attorneys to practice law in Texas and was sworn into the bar in 1926. Perales helped found the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), served his country in several diplomatic capacities and was a prolific writer. In Defense of My People sheds light on Perales' activism and the history of Mexican-American and Latino civil rights movements. The essays, written by scholars representing a number of disciplines from the U.S. and Mexico, touch on a variety of topics, including the impact of religion on Latinos, the concept of "race" and individual versus community action to bring about social and political change. Edited and with an introduction and chapter by law scholar Michael A. Olivas, In Defense of My People is the first full-length book available on this trailblazing Mexican-American leader. Scholars were able to take advantage of Perales' never-before-accessible personal archive, which his family donated to the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project and is now housed at the University of Houston's Special Collections Department of the M.D. Anderson Library. Originally presented at a conference on Alonso S. Perales at the University of Houston in 2012, this volume is required reading for anyone interested in the history of civil rights organizations, public intellectuals of the early 20th century and Mexican-American political development in Texas.
Book Synopsis In Defense of My People by : Alonso S. Perales
Download or read book In Defense of My People written by Alonso S. Perales and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1927, when his letters to two Texas governors about the assassination of Mexican Americans in police custody in South Texas were ignored, Alonso S. Perales wrote to President Coolidge, asking for the Justice Department to conduct an official investigation into their deaths. Perales believed US citizens of Mexican descent had an obligation to their country, “including offering our lives for this Nation when necessary.” He also believed adamantly that the United States had a duty to protect the rights of all its people. Originally published in Spanish in 1936 and 1937, In Defense of My People contains articles, letters and speeches written by one of the most influential civil rights activists of the early twentieth century. When Mexican-American veterans of World War II were denied service in a South Texas pool hall, even while wearing their uniforms, Perales wrote about the incident for The San Antonio Express. He also exhorted his community to secure an education and participate in civic duties. His form letter, “How to Request School Facilities for Our Children,” helped parents secure schools “equal to those furnished children of Anglo-American descent.” Alonso S. Perales was the co-founder of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), an attorney, activist and US diplomat. He has been largely forgotten, in part because his writings were in Spanish. This first-ever English translation of his two-volume publication, En defensa de mi raza, will make Perales’ contributions to equal rights for Mexicans and Mexican Americans available to a much larger audience. A long-lost gem of the civil rights movement, this book is a must-read for historians and anyone interested in the Latino community’s fight for rights, dignity and respect.
Book Synopsis Multiple Origins, Uncertain Destinies by : National Research Council
Download or read book Multiple Origins, Uncertain Destinies written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given current demographic trends, nearly one in five U.S. residents will be of Hispanic origin by 2025. This major demographic shift and its implications for both the United States and the growing Hispanic population make Multiple Origins, Uncertain Destinies a most timely book. This report from the National Research Council describes how Hispanics are transforming the country as they disperse geographically. It considers their roles in schools, in the labor market, in the health care system, and in U.S. politics. The book looks carefully at the diverse populations encompassed by the term "Hispanic," representing immigrants and their children and grandchildren from nearly two dozen Spanish-speaking countries. It describes the trajectory of the younger generations and established residents, and it projects long-term trends in population aging, social disparities, and social mobility that have shaped and will shape the Hispanic experience.
Book Synopsis Under-Representation of Hispanic-Americans in the U.S. Army's Officer Corps: A Study of An Inverse Dynamic by :
Download or read book Under-Representation of Hispanic-Americans in the U.S. Army's Officer Corps: A Study of An Inverse Dynamic written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our U.S. Army places high priority and commitment to achieving true diversity within its ranks. Hispanic-Americans are now the fastest growing group in the United States. According to Census Bureau projections, they will constitute the largest minority group in the Nation by 2005. (They would be the largest group today if the population of Puerto Rico were included). Hispanic-American youth, ages 18 and below, are already the largest minority group in the country in that age category. By 2035, one in five Americans will be Hispanic-American. Hispanic-Americans are drastically under-represented in the Army's officer corps, Documented data reveal that while Hispanic-Americans comprise about 11.4% (12.8% if Puerto Rico is included) of the country's population--and growing more rapidly than any other group-the Army's Hispanic-American officer content is only at 3.5%. This severe under-representation--coupled with factual indicators that Hispanic- Americans have the potential, desire, and history of serving with distinction-- presents an "inverse dynamic." The purpose of this research project was to identify the primary reasons underlying this under-representation and, more importantly, to provide concrete practical recommendations on how to "fix" it. Several recommendations, if implemented, will have policy and program implications. They will have significant, wide reaching, and long term impact. Based on the research methodology and analysis of the data, numerous findings and recommendations emerged. For simplicity, they were categorized into four areas: Exposure to the military; Educational attainment; Cultural issues; and, Outreach and mentorship by the military and Hispanic community. This document discusses the components of each in detail.
