Book excerpt: Using a basic qualitative research design, the purpose of this dissertation was to explore the perceptions of Hispanic clinicians with regards to the use and application of Hispanic cultural values. Given the rapid growth of the Hispanic community in the United States, the documented treatment disparities, and the many barriers to mental health treatment, culturally adapted therapy has become an established part of mental health treatment. This dissertation aimed to provide clinicians with strategies for recognizing, asking about, and incorporating cultural values as treatment interventions. The five clinicians were recruited and purposefully selected as a representative sample of professionals who primarily work within the Hispanic community. The clinicians were interviewed for approximately an hour and each interview was recorded for transcription and data analysis. Constant comparative analysis was utilized to analyze the data, resulting in the identification of 13 first level codes. These first level codes were then analyzed into numerous categories, from which themes and patterns emerged. Of most noticeable interest was the theme of Incorporating Values, in which the interviewees provided concrete strategies for recognizing and using cultural values in session. Suggestions included deliberate querying about value adherence, appropriate changes in communication styles to align with value adherence, including values as part of treatment goals, psychoeducation to reinforce values, and using specific tools such as self-disclosure or sayings to honor the cultural values.
