Download or read book Roads of the Heart written by Christopher Tilghman and published by Random House. This book was released on 2004-07-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the deep emotion and insight of “a true storyteller” (Richard Eder, Los Angeles Times), Christopher Tilghman, the author of the acclaimed Mason’s Retreat and In a Father’s Place, has written a powerful new novel of men and women, fathers and families. Eric Alwin has gone to visit his elderly father, a once commanding and charismatic Maryland senator who has seen his public service soured–and his family broken–by a sex scandal. Realizing that his own unfaithfulness, his disaffection with his career and marriage, seem to be a continuation of a family pattern, Eric is astonished to find his father proposing a bold expedition. The ensuing trip through the Deep South and the American heartland becomes both a journey into the emotional truth of the Alwin family and a breakthrough into a new kind of resilience and understanding, and love. Along the way, Eric will know anew not only his mother, Audrey, but his sisters, Alice and Poppy, and his own wife and son. As he discovers the surprising secret behind the scandal that defined his father’s fate, he will also realize what he must do to shape a more authentic and coherent life for himself. Christopher Tilghman’s Roads of the Heart is a brilliant achievement by an author who, grappling with the strains and discords of contemporary American culture, achieves a special understanding of how family members love and lose and find one another every day.

Here there is hope: any sin can be forgiven, and Christ gives men and women the grace to mortify fleshly desires and to humbly live for him.

Download or read book Heart of the City written by Ariel Sabar and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The couples in this book hail from across America and the world. Most don’t live in New York City. Some never did. What mattered to me was that they met there, in one of its iconic public places. Each of the nine stories begins just before that chance meeting—when they are strangers, oblivious to how, in moments, their lives will irrevocably change.” —from the Introduction The handsome Texas sailor who offers dinner to a runaway in Central Park. The Midwestern college girl who stops a cop in Times Square for restaurant advice. The Brooklyn man on a midnight subway who helps a weary tourist find her way to Chinatown. The Columbia University graduate student who encounters an unexpected object of beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A public place in the world’s greatest city. A chance meeting of strangers. A marriage. Heart of the City tells the remarkable true stories of nine ordinary couples—from the 1940s to the present—whose matchmaker was the City of New York. Intrigued by the romance of his own parents, who met in Washington Square Park, award-winning author Ariel Sabar set off on a far-ranging search for other couples who married after first meeting in one of New York City’s iconic public spaces. Sabar conjures their big-city love stories in novel-like detail, drawing us into the hearts of strangers just as their lives are about to change forever. In setting the stage for these surprising, funny, and moving tales, Sabar, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, takes us on a fascinating tour of the psychological research into the importance of place in how—and whether—people meet and fall in love. Heart of the City is a paean to the physical city as matchmaker, a tribute to the power of chance, and an eloquent reminder of why we must care about the design of urban spaces.

Book excerpt: The book is based on a true story on how a father, Athur Kingoina, mistreats his youngest son, Maxwell Ratemo who had just graduated from Nairobi University with a B.Com degree. His father occasionally, receives some money from his other three children who are studying in the US and thinks that the one at home should have a job and may be, be in a position of giving him money too. His girlfriend, Rosalina, is not kind either. She jilts him for another man whom he meets with her at Uhuru Park enjoying their time. The good thing was that he didn't confront them. This tough life makes him to run away from home to even a tougher life of being a street boy in Nakuru town after searching for a job in vain. A road accident one evening which nearly took his life, changed everything. When all these events were happening in the life of Ratemo, politicians were campaigning in preparation for the general elections which was scheduled to take place at the end of the year; Dec.27.2007. When the time reached and the electorates cast their votes, chaos erupted after the tallying had been done and the incumbent president was declared the winner. The results were disputed which sparked the violence. A great destruction was done to both human lives and properties. Business operations were disrupted for two months. This impacted negatively to jobs, especially into those foreign companies which had ventured to do business in the country. The majority of them, wound up their business ventures and re-located to other countries which were politically stable. Ratemo's company, DIMA investment was no exception. After the lull of the big storm of violence, the company found that it had made unsurmountable loss, it laid off almost all the workers and later on wound its business rendering many employees jobless.
