Excerpt: ... chapter vii. prince albert victor as an officer. tpon the gentle life at Cambridge followed the initiation of Prince Albert Victor into a new kind of life, not less fascinating in its way than the various phases of life through which the Prince had passed before. The educational result of the experiences outlined in the foregoing chapters was that he whom the world regarded as certain to be King of Great Britain and Ireland in the distant future was possessed of a considerable store of the knowledge which becomes a king. He knew, as an undergraduate, the tone of conversation among men of highly cultivated and scholarly intellect. He had attained on board the Britannia and the Bacchante a thorough, practical knowledge of life in Her Majesty's naval service; he knew thus the conditions under which a naval officer works, and the sterling stuff of which naval officers are made; and, as he had shown by trenchant criticisms animated by the spirit of common sense, he appreciated the difference between that part of our naval strength which is apparent only and that part of it which is real. Above all, he knew the characteristics and the people of the countries which go to make Greater Britain. He had fraternised with the Ceylon planter, with the Australian colonist and his brother of the Cape of Good Hope, he had seen the charm of the West Indies, and had been inspired by these scenes to form strong opinions as to the duties of England to her ancient possessions. Two experiences, and two only, were wanting to equip the Prince with princely knowledge. It is with the first of these that we must deal now. Vii. good-bye to mr.

Book Synopsis The Prince, His Tutor and the Ripper by : Deborah McDonald
Download or read book The Prince, His Tutor and the Ripper written by Deborah McDonald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-07-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many attempts to discover Jack the Ripper's identity, few omit the name of James Kenneth Stephen, tutor to Queen Victoria's eldest grandson, fondly known as Prince Eddy. While Stephen superficially fit the profile investigators established, was he really capable of the demented violence perpetrated by England's most famous serial killer? This volume takes an in-depth look at the life and experiences of James Kenneth Stephen, examining the relevant evidence and attempting to determine whether or not Stephen could actually have been involved in the Ripper murders. Delving into what little is known of Stephen's early years, the work discusses his relationship with his mother and his family's struggle with a hereditary mental illness. It follows him through his formative years at Eton, which he considered his true home and where he was introduced to the Greek notion of homosexuality. The work's primary focus is Stephen's relationship with Prince Eddy, who also became a suspect in the infamous London murders. The way in which Stephen's life intertwined with those of Prince Eddy and Montague Druitt, another Ripper suspect, is examined in detail. Other incidents of the fateful fall of 1888 and Stephen's final surrender to mental illness are also discussed. Appendices contain Stephen's poetry and details regarding his family ancestry.

This incredible biography gives us a deep insight into to life of the royal family during the greatest era in British History! Edward VII (1841-1910), the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward was related to royalty throughout Europe. Before his accession to the throne, he was heir apparent and held the title of Prince of Wales for longer than any of his predecessors. During the long reign of his mother, he was largely excluded from political power, and came to personify the fashionable, leisured elite. He travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties, and represented Britain on visits abroad. His tours of North America in 1860 and the Indian subcontinent in 1875 were popular successes, but despite public approval his reputation as a playboy prince soured his relationship with his mother.Content:An AppreciationBirth and Early YearsThe King's BoyhoodOxford, Cambridge, and the CurraghThe King's Visit to Canada and the United StatesDeath of the Prince Consort—Tour in the EastThe Wedding of King Edward and Queen AlexandraEarly Married LifeTheir Majesties' Tour in Egypt and the MediterraneanThe Franco-Prussian War—The King's Illness1873-1875The King's Tour in IndiaQuiet Years of Public Work, 1876-1887—Visit to Ireland—Queen Victoria's Golden JubileeSilver Wedding of King Edward and Queen Alexandra—Engagement and Marriage of Princess LouiseThe Baccarat Case—Birth of Lady Alexandra Duff—The King's Fiftieth Birthday—Illness of Prince GeorgeThe Duke of Clarence and AvondaleChapter XVII. Download or read book Royal Education written by Peter Gordon and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people assume that kings and queens have generally received a "good education", perhaps the best that money could buy at the time. This book investigates the reality: what is known about the education of British sovereigns from the beginning of the Tudor period to the end of the 20th century. There have been enormous differences in the seriousness with which education was regarded at different points in history. For example Henry VIII and his children were educated at a high point in the Renaissance, when educational ideas were regarded as important as well as exciting. Queen Elizabeth I was by any standards extremely well educated; by contrast Queen Elizabeth II's education has been described as "undemanding", because her parents wanted her to have a happy childhood. Peter Gordon and Denis Lawton have traced changes in royal education through the centuries and related them not only to educational ideas and theories, but also to changing political, social and religious contexts. The monarchy itself has changed as an institution: from the semi-absolute authority of the Tudors to a much more limited kind of monarchy by the end of the Stuart period (after one king had been executed and another exiled) to the constitutional monarchy of the 20th century. To what extent have such changes made any difference to royal education? What is the most appropriate kind of education for future kings and queens in our present day democracy? In this book, the authors confront these and other such questions and explore some of the answers.
