Book Synopsis Religion: Help or Hindrance to Development? by : Kenneth Mtata
Download or read book Religion: Help or Hindrance to Development? written by Kenneth Mtata and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of religion in the Western world used to be regarded as a direct consequence of development, and it was assumed that this would also occur in the global South once the same levels of economic development had been reached. The current flourishing of religion in the global South and the increased awareness of its significance in the global North prove that religion continues to play a crucial role. In those contexts where religion frames reality, development cannot ignore religion. This collection of essays by scholars and development practitioners from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin and North America explores the fascinating interface between religion and development as well as the negative and positive potential of religion in development. With contributions by Karel Th. August, Michael Biehl, Carlos Bonilla, Theresa Carino, Andreas Heuser, Eberhard Hitzler, Lindora Howard-Diawara, Martin Junge, Rebecca Larson, Michael Martin, Madipoane Masenya (ngwan'a Mphahlele), Johnson Mbillah, Ambrose Moyo, Kenneth Mtata, Samuel Ngun Ling, Kjell Nordstokke, Muriel Orevillo-Montenegro, Claudia Warning abd Vítor Westhelle.
Book Synopsis The Hindrances to Good Citizenship by : James B. Bryce
Download or read book The Hindrances to Good Citizenship written by James B. Bryce and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian, jurist, diplomat, and member of Parliament, James Bryce (1838-1922) lived one of those remarkably full and fruitful nineteenth-century public lives that remain a wonder today. He served as ambassador to the United States from 1907 to 1913 and was one of the most knowledgeable, perceptive, and sympathetic interpreters of American civilization since Tocqueville. Bryce's writings reveal a constant and deep concern with the nature and maintenance of democracy. Hindrances to Good Citizenship, first presented as a series of lectures at Yale in 1908, addresses the special problems of civic duty in a democracy. It is an outstanding example of classic liberal thought. A society's standard of civic duty, according to Bryce, depends on a reasonable balance between the principles of obedience and independence, the submission of the individual will to other wills and the assertion of that will against other wills. He defines three essential elements in public life that may potentially upset that balance and foster bad citizenship: indolence, selfish personal interest, and party spirit. Of these he deems indolence to be the most widespread, selfish personal interest to the most pernicious, and party spirit to be the most excusable, but also the most subtle and most likely to affect those classes from which most leaders are drawn. After exploring a wide range of specific political and social contexts and expressions of these obstacles to good citizenship, Bryce conclude by offering his thoughts on what can be done to remove them by improving the practical functioning of government and increasing civic spirit of the people. Although he was writing at the turn of the century, Bryce speaks to us as if a contemporary and has much to offer as we approach the century's end. Hindrances to Good Citizenship will interest those concerned with normative theory-whether attached to political science, sociology, or American studies.

Book Synopsis Hindrance by : Darlene Johnson-Jefferson
Download or read book Hindrance written by Darlene Johnson-Jefferson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-01-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hindrance - “Who Or What Is Holding You Back” was inspired by God. This book was designed to identify some of the areas that have been strategically placed to block the plan of God for our lives. Although the title speaks for itself, we must ask ourselves a question. What is holding us back from fulfilling our God given destiny or becoming all that God has called and created us to be? Often times, during our everyday journey, we find ourselves in the same predicament. We are heading on a road or path leading toward God’s perfect will for our lives. The pathway is made straight; the surroundings are clear and suddenly we find ourselves coming to a complete stop. Prior to this, we noticed a change in our surroundings along the way. We began to experience a little bit of disappointments here and there. There are times, on this journey, when we will experience a few heartaches and even some pain. We thought everything was going to be all right when the disappointments, heartaches and even pain began to disappear. Suddenly without warning, we come to a complete STOP!! Trouble is on every side. We began to question what went wrong along the way. How could this have happened? Why? Why me? Why not you? God has created each and every one of us for a divine purpose. You are not a mistake neither is your existence or life in vain. I believe that once we identify and conquer those things that are holding us back, and then we can move forward into our God given destiny.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement by : Larry E Sullivan
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement written by Larry E Sullivan and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2004-12-15 with total page 1729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click ′Additional Materials′ for downloadable samples Although there is a plethora of studies on crime and punishment, law enforcement is a relatively new field of serious research. When courts, sentencing, prisons, jails, and other areas of the criminal justice system are studied, often the first point of entry into the system is through police and law enforcement agencies. Unfortunately, understanding of the important issues in law enforcement has little general literature to draw on. Currently available reference works on policing are narrowly focused and sorely out-of-date. To this end, a distinguished roster of authors, representing many years of knowledge and practice in the field, draw on the latest research and methods to delineate, describe, and analyze all areas of law enforcement. This three-volume Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement provides a comprehensive, critical, and descriptive examination of all facets of law enforcement on the state and local, federal and national, and international stages. This work is a unique reference source that provides readers with informed discussions on the practice and theory of policing in an historical and contemporary framework. The volumes treat subjects that are particular to the area of state and local, federal and national, and international policing. Many of the themes and issues of policing cut across disciplinary borders, however, and several entries provide comparative information that places the subject in context. Key Features • Three volumes cover state and local, federal, and international law enforcement • More than 250 contributors composed over 400 essays on all facets of law enforcement • An editorial board made up of the leading scholars, researchers, and practitioners in the field of law enforcement • Descriptions of United States Federal Agency law enforcement components • Comprehensive and inclusive coverage, exploring concepts and social and legal patterns within the larger topical concern • Global, multidisciplinary analysis Key Themes • Agencies, Associations, and Organizations • Civilian/Private Involvement • Communications • Crime Statistics • Culture/Media • Drug Enforcement • Federal Agencies/Organizations • International • Investigation, Techniques • Types of Investigation • Investigative Commissions • Law and Justice • Legislation/Legal Issues • Military • Minority Issues • Personnel Issues • Police Conduct • Police Procedure • Policing Strategies • Safety and Security • Specialized Law Enforcement Agencies • Tactics • Terrorism • Victims/Witnesses Editors Marie Simonetti Rosen Dorothy Moses Schulz M.
