Book excerpt: The work reported is the result of an investigation of phase equilibria in the binary system, tungsten-carbon. A tentative phase diagram is presented which differs significantly from the one proposed by Sykes in 1930 and which is generally accepted today. The data were obtained by high-temperature differential thermal analysis and classical quenching procedures, both supplemented by metallographic, x-ray, and chemical techniques. Results for the tungsten-carbon binary system indicate a eutectic between W and W2C at 2735 C, and a eutectic between W5C3 and C at 2765 C. The W2C lattice accommodates 72 and 74 atomic per cent W at 2475 degrees and 2735 C, respectively. Carbon solubility is evident only at 2540 C, the eutectoid temperature. A new phase, W5C3, was discovered which is stable only above 2540 C. WC decomposes at 2730C into W5C3 and C.

Book excerpt: Despite the significant progress in the study of point defects in metals, some important problems still do not have unambiguous solutions. One of the most practically important questions relates to equilibrium defect concentrations. There exist two opposite viewpoints: (1) defect contributions to physical properties of metals at high temperatures are small and cannot be separated from the effects of anharmonicity; the equilibrium defect concentrations at the melting points are in the range of 10(-4) to 10(-3); (2) in many cases, defect contributions to the specific heat of metals are much larger than nonlinear effects of anharmonicity and can be separated without crucial errors; the equilibrium concentrations at the melting points are of the order of 10(-3) in low-melting-point metals and 10(-2) in high-melting-point metals. This book discusses the experimental results and theoretical considerations favoring each claim. At present, the majority of the scientific community hold the first viewpoint. Regrettably, the data supporting the second viewpoint have never been displayed and discussed together, and the criticism of this viewpoint has never included a detailed analysis. Important arguments supporting this viewpoint have appeared in the last decade. It may turn out that just calorimetric determinations provide the most reliable values of equilibrium defect concentrations in metals. In this book, the main attention is paid to equilibrium point defects in metals and their relation to thermophysical properties of metals. Along with a discussion on experimental data and theoretical estimates now available, some approaches are proposed that seem to be most suitable for settling thequestion.

Wetting has been a significant scientific concern for the last two centuries and reference will be made to classical work by nineteenth century scientists such as Dupré, Laplace and Young that was validated by observations of the behaviour of chemically inert ambient temperature systems.In attempting to achieve the aims of the book, the text has been divided into ten Chapters that can be grouped into four stages of presentation. The first stage comprises two Chapters that review established and newly developed models for their relevance to wetting behaviour at high temperatures, including recent models that encompass the role of chemical reactions at the solid/liquid interfaces. Attention is paid both to equilibrium wetting behaviour (Chapter 1) and to the factors that control the approach to equilibrium (Chapter 2). Then follow Chapters concerned with experimental techniques for scientific measurement of the extent of wetting (Chapter 3) and with the surface energy data for both metals and non-metals that are essential for quantitative interpretation of wetting behaviour (Chapter 4). Measurements on binary and ternary carbide systems revealed a number of previously undetected phase reactions. Wth the exception of V2C, all subcarbides of the refractory transition metals undergo isothermal phase changes at high temperatures. The lower temperature stability limits of the high temperature phases in the systems Mo-C and W-C were determined. Similar to the corresponding system with oxygen, the a-modification of hafnium is stabilized to higher temperatures by carbon additions, while the alpha-beta- transformation in titanium and zirconium is affected to a moderate extent only. The application of DTA-techniques to the investigation of non-variant equilibria involving a liquid phase and to the study of reaction kinetics (disproportionation of solid solutions, reactions along non-equilibrium paths, reactions involving order-disorder phenomena) is discussed and examples are given.
