Book Synopsis Effects of Temperature and Time on Aircraft and Missile Structures by : Stanford University. Department of Aeronautical Engineering
Download or read book Effects of Temperature and Time on Aircraft and Missile Structures written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautical Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey is made of the new problems introduced in the structural analysis of airplanes and missiles by the high temperatures caused by aerodynamic heating. Thermal stresses, thermal buckling, the effect of creep on stress distribution and stability, and ablation are discussed and special attention is paid to the behavior of the pure shells used in missiles. It is concluded that the modern structural analyst must acquire a knowledge of many disciplines that were of no interest to his predecessor working before World War II. Among these disciplines are thermodynamics, metallurgy, and the physics of the solid state. In all the new problems two parameters appear that did not enter classical structural analysis. The first is temperature which is the cause of all the difficulties of the modern structural designer and analyst. The second is time, because at high temperatures no structure can carry loads for indefinitely long periods. One of the most important tasks of the analyst of missiles is the determination of the lifetime of the structure. (Author).

[aircraft Construction Materials] written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of low velocity projectile impact on sandwich-type structural components was investigated. The materials used in the fabrication of the impact surface were graphite-, Kevlar-, and boron-fibers with appropriate epoxy matrices. The testing of the specimens was performed at moderately low- and high-temperatures as well as at room temperature to assess the impact-initiated strength degradation of the laminates. Eleven laminates with different stacking sequences, orientations, and thicknesses were tested. The low energy projectile impact is considered to simulate the damage caused by runway debris, the dropping of the hand tools during servicing, etc., on the secondary aircraft structures fabricated with the composite materials. The results show the preload and the impact energy combinations necessary to cause catastrophic failure in the laminates tested. A set of faired curves indicating the failure thresholds is shown separately for the tension-and compression-loaded laminates. The specific-strengths and -modulii for the various laminates tested are also given. Sharma, A. V. Unspecified Center NASA-CR-162718 NSG-1296...

Download or read book High Temperature Structures and Materials written by A. M. Freudenthal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Structures and Materials is a compilation of the proceedings of the Third Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Columbia University in New York on January 23-25, 1963. The symposium provided a forum for discussing structural mechanics under conditions of elevated temperatures. Emphasis is placed on the various aspects of structural design for elevated temperature service. The following areas are covered: material aspects of elevated temperature design; effects of high-speed environment; thermal stress analysis; and design criteria and reliability. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins by assessing the temperature dependence of elastic and anelastic properties in solids, followed by a discussion on the thermo-mechanical behavior of ceramics. Subsequent chapters explore the physical aspects of creep; thermal fatigue and its relation to creep rupture and mechanical fatigue; materials aspects of the re-entry problem; and problems of heat conduction and melting. Thermal stresses in viscoelastic solids are also considered, along with creep design and aspects of reliability under conditions of elevated temperature creep and fatigue. This monograph will be a valuable resource for material physicists and mechanical and structural designers concerned with the problem of elevated temperature effects on the performance and safety of modern structures.
