The workshop was divided in five sessions: hydrobionics, boundary layer flows, supercavitating flows, air-water penetration and control of cavitation. This report gives a summary of the presented lectures. The workshop was intended to improve the contacts between European/American and Ukrainian/Russian scientists and succeeded in this. The presented lectures were theoretical as well as practical and gave more insight in the behavior of high speed body motion in water. However, still not everything is clearly understood and further research is recommended.

Book excerpt: Experimental Hydrodynamics of Fast-Floating Aquatic Animals presents the latest research on the physiological, morphological and evolutionary factors in aquatic animal locomotion. Beginning with an overview on how to conduct experiments on swimming aquatic animals, assessing hydrodynamic forces, resistance and geometric parameters of animal bodies, the book then details how aquatic animals, such as fast-moving dolphins, can achieve high speeds without over-expelling their energy resources. It provides insights into investigations on how animals, including dolphins, sharks and swordfish can maneuver through water at high speeds, offering a natural model for improving human and technological underwater locomotion. This book is essential for researchers and practicing biologists interested in the study of aquatic animal locomotive physiology and its application to human technology. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students will also find this a helpful academic resource for further understanding animal hydrodynamics. Analyzes the locomotive benefits of bodily structures in aquatic animals such as cetacean species, penguins, sharks and fast-swimming fish species, such as the swordfish Features the latest research and firsthand investigative studies of aquatic animal hydrodynamic factors, including skin elasticity, fin shape and movement, bioenergy, and more Provides a comparison of human to animal hydrodynamics, detailing how energy is spent differently due to evolutionary advances in the latter

Book excerpt: The technical topics covered during the Workshop included Hydrobionics, Boundary Layer Flows, Supercavitating Flows, Air-Water Penetration, and Control of Cavitation. Hydrobionics is the science of studying the structure, form, and movement of swimming animals in order to determine possible ways to achieve better efficiency, such as drag reduction and an increase of propulsion efficiency with minimum possible energy expenditures, for bodies such as submarines and missiles. A general summary of noise generation by high speed bodies in water was given. It was clear that this field is not well understood at the present time, and that a great deal more research effort is required in this area. In addition, presentations were given on a Simple Model for the Aero-Hydrodynamics of Ekranoplans, and on the Movement of a Wing Above a Wavy Water Surface. Of the 35 presented papers, 18 came from the Ukraine, 5 from Russia and 12 from the NATO nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents up-to-date and unifying formulations for treating dynamics of different types of mechanical systems with variable mass. The starting point is overview of the continuum mechanics relations of balance and jump for open systems from which extended Lagrange and Hamiltonian formulations are derived. Corresponding approaches are stated at the level of analytical mechanics with emphasis on systems with a position-dependent mass and at the level of structural mechanics. Special emphasis is laid upon axially moving structures like belts and chains and on pipes with an axial flow of fluid. Constitutive relations in the dynamics of systems with variable mass are studied with particular reference to modeling of multi-component mixtures. The dynamics of machines with a variable mass are treated in detail and conservation laws and the stability of motion will be analyzed. Novel finite element formulations for open systems in coupled fluid and structural dynamics are presented.

Book excerpt: The Science of Shooting Fundamentals book is the definitive and complete examination of the outside throwing motion, the fake, the drive-in shot and the 2-meter shot. Because two-thirds of the player's body is underwater and unseen, the water polo throwing motion is the most difficult motion to learn and to teach. How can we learn to shoot when we cannot see the underwater motion? The Science of Shooting Water Polo Fundamentals book reveals the secrets. For the first time in English, the secrets of the gold medal winning Hungarians and Serbians are revealed. With 190 full body pictures in over 200-pages, the mechanics above and below the water are clearly shown. The Science of Shooting book provides step by step answers for players and coaches demanding the secret knowledge of the European throwing method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Swim Speed Secrets, 4-time Olympian, gold medalist, and triathlon world champion Sheila Taormina reveals the swim technique used by the world’s fastest swimmers. Over the course of 4 Olympic Games and throughout her career as a world champion triathlete, Taormina refined her exceptional technique as a student of the sport, studying the world’s best swimmers using underwater photographs and video analysis. From Johnny Weissmuller to Michael Phelps, the world’s fastest swimmers share two common elements: high stroke rate and a high-elbow underwater pull. Many swimmers and triathletes neglect the underwater pull, distracted by stroke count or perfecting less critical details like body position, streamlining, and roll. Swim Speed Secrets focuses on producing power—the most crucial element of swimming—to help triathletes and swimmers overhaul their swim stroke and find the speed that’s been eluding them. With a commonsense approach that comes from decades of practice and years of hands-on coaching experience, Taormina shows swimmers how to transition to faster swimming. Swim Speed Secrets includes: The best drills to cultivate a more sensitive feel for the water Dryland and strength building exercises to develop arm position and upper body musculature Crisp photos of Olympic swimmers and variations in their high-elbow underwater pull Clear descriptions of the key moments of the underwater pull Tips that helped her perform at a world-class level for two decades Sheila Taormina’s Swim Speed Secrets brings the focus back where it belongs—to a powerful underwater stroke. With this approach, triathletes and swimmers can stop swimming for survival and break through to new levels of speed and confidence in the water.
