Such careful and extensive investigation as has been made in the field of working and foundation vocabularies by Jones and Ayres, to mention only two of the recent investigators, removes the subject from the realm of conjecture and haphazard choice and greatly simplifies the teaching of spelling by reducing the number of words formerly included in spelling books. No word, of course, is immune to misspelling, for the ingenuity of the bad speller is prodigious, but certain classes of words are more frequently misspelled than others, and against these the teacher must wage constant and unceasing warfare with all the weapons at his command. Words containing ie and ei, words ending in el and le, words containing silent letters and doubled letters are all pitfalls for the unwary. Moreover, the best literature cannot be read intelligently, and Will not be-read at all by the majority, without proper introduction and guidance. In the matter of composition, certainly no man is regarded as fit for service in his community who cannot express his thoughts and desires in cor rect every-day English; and, though I say it that shouldn't, most college professors would be well satisfied with such ideal material! Even the last of the three apparent aspersions by no means eliminates the subject of English from discussion. For, even if the day ever comes when English is not required in the high school, it will always have a favorite place in the curri onlum. Granted, then, that English shall continue to occupy a promi nent post in our educational institutions, it is eminently fitting that we should consider the relation between high school and col lege English. This question, strictly American, can best be answered in the truly American way, by asking several others What are the principal aims in the teaching of English? With these ends in view, what should constitute the content of the course? How is this to be presented so as to bring about the desired results? As the college can but continue the work of the high school, I take it that it will be sufficient to discuss these questions with special reference to the latter. The "Report on the Examination in English for Admission to Harvard College," June, 1906, called attention among other things to the requirement that "no candidate will be accepted whose work is seriously faulty in spelling." The report devoted a page or two to revealing the frequent failure of graduates of secondary schools to meet this fundamental requirement in English. A questionnaire which I sent to the English departments of twenty-four other universities asking whether their entering students were sufficiently prepared in spelling, and whether, in their judgment, high schools should teach spelling as such, developed the fact that few universities are satisfied with the spelling of entering students, while practically all are emphatic in declaring that high schools should teach spelling. Inquiry among business men of Chicago developed practically the same attitude regarding the need of spelling, correct orthography in business letters being regarded as indispensable to hold trade and to reflect credit upon the firm. In the April, 1908, number of Education, I published the results of some of these inquiries and also described a list of words which my own high school and a neighboring university are using - words selected with the enthusiastic help of Mrs. Anna Tilden Bacon, from English themes in high schools and colleges, from high school texts, business correspondence, civil service examinations, and the English classics of the college entrance requirements. This list is now offered in book form. * * * * * * * Suggestions to the Teacher Let every student have a book.
