Book excerpt: Fourteen teachers, five at Levi Dickey Elementary School, two at Woodcrest Junior High School, and seven at Chino High School in the Chino Valley Unified School District were administered a teacher perception/teacher profile survey. The results were analyzed to determine if students were engaged in physical education more than four times a week; if teachers believed their students are coming into school today more obese than students in the past five years; were students eating habits affecting the rise in obesity; and what the causes were to obesity rising at Levi Dickey Elementary School, Woodcrest Junior High School, and Chino High School. The results indicate that while students were engaged in physical education more than 4 times a week, students were still coming to school more obese. All teachers agreed that students were coming to school more obese than students five years ago. Also, all teachers believed students eating habits were affecting the rise in obesity. Lastly, teacher's responses to the three major factors in why students were obese; the results indicated the following: a lack of parent involvement; poor food choices; and inactivity were causes of obesity rising at Levi Dickey Elementary School, Woodcrest Junior High School, and Chino High School. The conclusion indicated that although students were engaged in physical education at least four times a week; students eating habits; and lack of physical education, parent involvement, and inactivity were the cause in the rise of obesity. Parents and schools need to get involved and push students to be active so they can live a long and healthy life.

Three in ten school-aged children in the United States (US) are OB. This represents a three-fold increase since 1980 (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2011). Should this trend continue, by 2030 nearly one in two school-aged children in the US will be OB (Levi, Segal, St. Laurent, Lang, & Rayburn, 2012). Eighty percent of these youth will become OB adults (Dietz, 2004). Physical Education is one response to the current obesity epidemic in the United States. The literature indicates much attention has been given to causal interventions including over-consumption, poor nutrition and sedentary living- all with only marginal success. This dissertation examines the perspective of OB adolescent students concerning Physical Education (PE). Using a qualitative approach, 34 OB and non-obese (NOB) middle-schools students were interviewed about their lived experiences in PE to answer the questions: Do OB children feel welcomed into PE classes by both their PE teachers and classmates? From instruction received in PE class, do OB students receive the information and skills necessary to help them lead a healthy life? What are OB students' perceptions of PE? Comparisons were made within and between the groups. The participants' responses indicate we should have concern about the well-being of the OB student in PE class. This concern is for their mental as well as physical wellness as they describe being targets of bullying, suffering physical pain, being humiliated and isolated, all as the result of the actions and inactions of the PE teacher. The data is particularly strong concerning how the classroom management and curricular decisions of the PE teacher have affected the OB adolescent student. In closing, the role PE can play to better educate the OB student as well as potential implication for how we prepare future PE professionals to teach OB students is discussed.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

This case study, utilizing ethnographic tools of observation, interviews, and investigation of artifacts, examines educators' perceptions of the role of the school in the prevention of this epidemic, how perceptions affect practices, and the barriers to prevention efforts. The lens of caring theory, social justice, and critical theory frame the analysis of how educators in a medium-sized elementary school contend with the problem of childhood obesity. Educators in this setting perceived their role in the prevention of childhood obesity as limited and tended to blame parents for the condition of obese students. Because of this perception, attempts at prevention were somewhat sporadic and individualistic in nature. Barriers included a lack of training in critical reflection and the stresses of mandated testing and budget cuts. Teachers and staff members cared for their obese students' well-being, but generally lacked the resources to help them. They were often uncomfortable discussing obesity with parents and tended to avoid the subject, and unfortunately, this conversation needs to occur in order to find help for their obese students.

Book excerpt: Age-related psychosocial research indicates that adults, adolescents, and children generally prefer features of younger looking faces over those of older, often having negative perceptions and connotations of aging/abilities of older people. Limited research has investigated the influence appearance on physical education teachers' effectiveness. The present studies examined the impact of a physical education teacher's apparent age on American students' learning and perceptions of the teacher. Participants were students from two elementary schools (4th-5th grade, N = 188), two middle schools (6th-8th grade, N = 273); and two high schools (9th-12th grade, N = 114). Students were randomly assigned to view one of two virtually identical films of swimming lessons taught by the same teacher. In the young-appearance lesson (YAL), the teacher was relatively youthful appearing. In the middle-aged lesson (MAL), he had been aged by a theatrical makeup artist to appear much older. Immediately following the viewing of their assigned lesson, students completed a lesson content examination and a questionnaire about their perceptions of the teacher. Inferential statistical tests for Study One indicated that elementary students who watched the YAL scored significantly higher on the content examination and perceived the teacher to be significantly more likeable, competent, and a better role model than did the students who viewed the MAL, potentially supporting either a sociological or psychological/developmental explanation for how and why students of different ages respond to and learn from differently aged physical education teachers. Inferential statistical tests for Study Two revealed that middle school students who watched the YAL learned more from the teacher and perceived the teacher more favorably (more likeable and a better role model), providing further support for a sociological explanation of how and why students of different ages respond to and learn from physical education teachers of different ages. Inferential statistical tests for Study Three indicated that high school students who watched the MAL perceived the teacher more favorably (more positive role model). Performance on the content examination was similar for both groups, supporting a psychological/developmental explanation of how and why students respond to and learn from physical education teachers of different ages.

Book excerpt: The current study explored the high school health promotion environment with regards to physical activity, nutrition, and sedentary behaviors from the perspective of high school health and physical education teachers and administrators. Specifically, potential strategies for a prevention program to promote student physical activity participation and healthy eating, and decrease student sedentary time were explored. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with physical education teachers to explore potential strategies to promote student health behaviors. Next, interviews were conducted with high school administrators to determine the feasibility of recommended strategies. Teachers and administrators in the current study expressed a need for strategies that target student health at the high school level; however, educators felt taxed and overburdened, and cited the current state of public education as a barrier to implementing strategies. Additional barriers to implementing health-based strategies included funding, transportation, supervision, facilities, and logistics or regulations. Participants explained the school lunch program has improved, with schools now offering healthier food. Unfortunately, the perceived number of students buying lunches has decreased and educators still feel the lunch options could be improved. Although there were many barriers to implementing the extracurricular initiatives discussed, the following strategies were considered the most feasible by teachers and administrators in the current study: intramurals, open gym times, fitness classes or group exercise classes, fitness apps, and improving the school lunches. Teachers and administrators held mixed views about policy changes that have the greatest potential to influence student health behaviors. Educators called for parent and community partnerships to help overcome the hurdles associated with implementing extracurricular school-based health activities. Findings illustrated the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to implementing health-based strategies at the high school level.

States Childhood obesity rates range from 8.7% to 26.1% according to the National Survey of Childrens Health (NSCH) (State of Obesity, 2019). This range of obesity rates suggest that there may be different variables that are making one state to have such different rates of childhood obesity than another. Physical activity has been identified by researchers as a modifiable risk factor for the development of obesity (Pietilinen et al., 2008). There is a lack of research behind physical educations (PE) role in producing significant results in increasing physical activity and reducing obesity rates amongst pediatric populations. The purpose of this project was to examine the relationship between physical activity and obesity rates with physical education policy in each state. This study examined secondary data physical activity participation, obesity and overweight rates of high school students in each state from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, as well as state physical education policy in each state from SHAPE. Findings indicated that the differences between the states were for the most part insignificant. There were some significant results that found that states with better quality PE had higher rates of obesity/overweight high school students and higher levels of high school students who reported not attaining adequate levels of physical activity. These findings contradicted the hypothesis. A significant finding that supported the hypothesis was that states with better PE policy has higher reported PE class attendance. Future research should be conducted to further understand physical education role in combating childhood obesity.
