Book excerpt: This book focuses on characterization of organic coatings by different testing methods and understanding of structure formation and materials properties. The knowledge of protective organic coatings and current test methods is based largely on empirical experience. This book aims at explaining the coating property changes during film drying and curing in terms of chemical and physical transformations. Current test methods are reviewed with emphasis on understanding their physical basis and expressing the test results in terms of comparable physical quantities. In general, this book provides readers a deeper understanding of the binder design, coating film formation process, properties build-up, appearance and defect formation, and automotive paint application. It also suggests manifold ways to improving the coatings performance. This book is designed for coating professionals to gain deeper understanding of characterization techniques and to select the right ones to solve their coating problems. It is ideal for both experienced and early career scientists and engineers. Also, it is useful for graduate students in the general area of protective coatings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has emerged out of our long-time research interests on the topic of latex film formation. Over the years we have built up a repertoire of slides used in conference presentations, short courses and tutorials on the topic. The story presented in this book has thereby taken shape as it has been told and re-told to a mix of academic and industrial audiences. The book presents a wide body of work accumulated by the polymer colloids community over the past five decades, but the selection of examples has been flavoured by our particular experimental interests and development of mathematical models. We intend the book to be a starting point for academic and industrial scientists beginning research on latex film formation. The emphasis is on fundam- tal mechanisms, however, and not on applications nor on specific effects of formu- tions. We hope that the book consolidates the understanding that has been achieved to-date in the literature in a more comprehensive way than is possible in a review article. We trust that the reader will appreciate the fascination of the topic.
Book Synopsis Biological Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, 2 Volume Set by : Roland A. Fleck
Download or read book Biological Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, 2 Volume Set written by Roland A. Fleck and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The go‐to resource for microscopists on biological applications of field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM) The evolution of scanning electron microscopy technologies and capability over the past few years has revolutionized the biological imaging capabilities of the microscope—giving it the capability to examine surface structures of cellular membranes to reveal the organization of individual proteins across a membrane bilayer and the arrangement of cell cytoskeleton at a nm scale. Most notable are their improvements for field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM), which when combined with cryo-preparation techniques, has provided insight into a wide range of biological questions including the functionality of bacteria and viruses. This full-colour, must-have book for microscopists traces the development of the biological field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM) and highlights its current value in biological research as well as its future worth. Biological Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy highlights the present capability of the technique and informs the wider biological science community of its application in basic biological research. Starting with the theory and history of FEGSEM, the book offers chapters covering: operation (strengths and weakness, sample selection, handling, limitations, and preparation); Commercial developments and principals from the major FEGSEM manufacturers (Thermo Scientific, JEOL, HITACHI, ZEISS, Tescan); technical developments essential to bioFEGSEM; cryobio FEGSEM; cryo-FIB; FEGSEM digital-tomography; array tomography; public health research; mammalian cells and tissues; digital challenges (image collection, storage, and automated data analysis); and more. Examines the creation of the biological field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM) and discusses its benefits to the biological research community and future value Provides insight into the design and development philosophy behind current instrument manufacturers Covers sample handling, applications, and key supporting techniques Focuses on the biological applications of field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM), covering both plant and animal research Presented in full colour An important part of the Wiley-Royal Microscopical Series, Biological Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy is an ideal general resource for experienced academic and industrial users of electron microscopy—specifically, those with a need to understand the application, limitations, and strengths of FEGSEM.

Book Synopsis Scanning Electron Microscopy of Rubber Tear by : Willard D. Bascom
Download or read book Scanning Electron Microscopy of Rubber Tear written by Willard D. Bascom and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple technique was devised for SEM observation into tears or cuts in rubber or other flexible polymers. A rectangular specimen (about 2 x 1 x 0.5 cm) was held in a bent configuration in a SEM holder and a shallow razor cut made at the top of the bend. Tensile stresses cause the rubber to tear and advance the cut depth. Observing along the tearing direction the highly stressed rubber at the tear tip (damage zone) could be observed in detail. A number of commercial rubbers including natural, nitrile, neoprene, polybutadiene and fluorocarbon compositions were examined using this technique. Initially, the stressed rubber at the tear tip was more or less continuous although some structure and occasionally cavitation were observed at high magnifications (> 5000X). Removal of the specimens from the microscope and exposure to laboratory air resulted in gradual (2-20 hr) development of an open network of fibers and nodules, due to oxygen/ozone attack on the stressed rubber. The process resembled the slow relaxation of a stretched film of a highly viscous liquid under the action of surface forces. The rate of the network formation was generally proportional to the oxidation resistance of the rubber. The significance of these observations is discussed in reference to the practice of cyclizing rubber surfaces as a pretreatment for adhesive bonding. (Author).
