The movements of human body can be interpreted on a physical level through pose estimation, i.e., static reconstruction of three dimensional (3D) articulated configurations, or on a higher more semantic level through action recognition, i.e., understanding the body’s movements over time. It has a wide array of applications in the areas like gaming, sports analysis, security and surveillance, and healthcare. In the gaming industry, learning human action style and creating character animation from a repertoire of actions is very popular. Gait analysis is a crucial step in many biomedical applications as well as security, surveillance and biometric applications. A plethora of sensors are available to capture the human motion data in various modalities easily and in a very cost effective manner. The sheer amount of data produced by researchers, using such sensors, every day demand for human motion analysis methods that are computationally efficient. This thesis attempts to develop effective techniques, based on computer vision and computer graphics, to solve some of the important problems in application areas of human motion analysis. Specifically, three key application areas, namely, sports activity analysis, surveillance and security, and healthcare are considered. New methods for applications like human style sequence learning, gait analysis, gesture recognition, and time series matching are proposed. In the first half of this thesis, the problem addressed is learning and synthesis of structured sport activities with kickboxing as a case study. Monocular video data is used as input and human style sequences are investigated in order to identify higher level sequence style. Main idea is to learn the style embedded in action sequencing and transitions in between, and then to synthesize new sequences for virtual characters. Widely popular computer vision techniques are employed to obtain the sequence of actions performed in the video and to train a model with this sequence to drive a virtual character. Furthermore, style information embedded in transitions are also obtained from video and is used to create style preserving realistic transitions. In the second half of this thesis, high dimensional sensor data in different modalities is analyzed. Since human motion data is a high dimensional time series data, a novel shape aware multidimensional time series matching algorithm is developed and tested for a variety of scenarios like noise, missing data, different data modalities, small amount of training as well as testing data and different application domains. Firstly, processes for two new biometric systems, namely, gait and visual password are proposed towards surveillance and security. Secondly, processes for recognition of gestures and activities are proposed towards healthcare. Extensive experimentations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the various techniques developed in this thesis. Performance of the proposed methods is compared with that of the state of the art methods used in the human motion analysis under best possible conditions. For this purpose, the results obtained are validated using some popular benchmark databases as well as a few in-house created databases. It is shown that, the proposed methods outperform the state of the art in most of the cases.

Book excerpt: This research applies recent advances in kinematics, using fundamental models of dynamics, coupled with experimental observations in order to develop methods capable of predicting the performance as well as motion characteristics of certain basic intermittent-motion mechanisms which are useful in industry and military applications. These methods were applied to a selected group of mechanisms, such as Geneva, ratchets and escapements. The analytical part of this research involves: investigation of the kinematic and dynamic performance characteristics of these selected mechanisms; formulation of a dynamic model of impact; determination of the dynamic response of this model under various operating conditions; and development of unit computational programs for analyzing the kinematic characteristics and dynamic response of these intermittent-motion mechanisms. The experimental part of the research involves measurements of the kinematic and dynamic response, and stresses of high-speed external Geneva mechanisms. The purpose of the measurements is to correlate with analysis and to verify the results of theoretical findings. The theory developed in the high-speed intermittent-motion mechanisms was extended to two related areas of mechanism design problems: the momentary-dwell type of intermittent-motion mechanisms which have potential application to the high-speed automatic weapon system; and an investigation on the workspace of a robotic manipulator system.

Even though motion analysis is often called dynamic image analysis, it is frequently based on a small number of consecutive images, sometimes just two or three in a sequence. This case is similar to an analysis of static images, and the motion is actually analyzed at a higher level. There are three main groups of motion-related problems: Motion detection, moving object detection and localization, and derivation of 3D object properties. In this thesis we focused our attention on the second group. More specifically, within this group we will be dealing with four main issues: Moving object boundary detection, boundary delineation, boundary representation and description, and boundary matching for fast future location prediction. To detect moving object boundaries a new theory derived from temporal cooccurrence matrices is proposed, developed and applied. Afterwards, a filter design is developed to get fast and accurate results. As any boundary detection method, the output from this stage is usually a set of unlinked segments of boundaries. To assemble these segments of boundaries into meaningful boundary, a new active contour model has been proposed and developed that is capable of escaping energy minima caused by noise. Since our method for matching we based on the correspondence of interest points (feature points), we needed a proper set of invariant descriptors in order to match contours of two successive frames. For this task, a new theory on boundary representation and description called The theory of variances and varilets has been proposed and developed. We used moments of the variance transform and the normalized variance transform for an initial matching of contours which is in some sense a global matching. Afterwards, an Itemtive sub-mappings strategy has been proposed and applied for fine matching. An important issue from the moment function was that extrema of successive derivatives provide as a coarse-to-fine matching, where to each feature point we assigned a proper descriptor induced from the normalized variance transform matrix.

Many methods for motion analysis have been developed in the context of computer vision, including feature tracking, optical flow, keypoint analysis, image registration, and so on. In this work, we propose a toolbox of motion analysis techniques suitable for biomedical image sequence analysis. We particularly study ciliated cells. These cells are covered with beating cilia. They are present in humans in areas where fluid motion is necessary. In the lungs and the upper respiratory tract, Cilia perform the clearance task, which means cleaning the lungs of dust and other airborne contaminants. Ciliated cells are subject to genetic or acquired diseases that can compromise clearance, and in turn cause problems in their hosts. These diseases can be characterized by studying the motion of cilia under a microscope and at high temporal resolution. We propose a number of novel tools and techniques to perform such analyses automatically and with high precision, both ex-vivo on biopsies, and in-vivo. We also illustrate our techniques in the context of eco-toxicity by analysing the beating pattern of the heart of fish embryo.

Robots are commonly thought of as tools that perform tasks such as vacuuming the floor, while proteins play essential roles in many biochemical processes. However, the functionality of both robots and proteins is highly dependent on their motions. In order to study motions in these two divergent domains, the same underlying algorithmic framework can be applied. This method is derived from probabilistic roadmap methods (PRMs) originally developed for robotic motion planning. It builds a graph, or roadmap, where configurations are represented as vertices and transitions between configurations are edges. The contribution of this work is a set of intelligent methods applied to PRMs. These methods facilitate both the modeling and analysis of motions, and have enabled the study of complex and high-dimensional problems in both robotic and molecular domains. In order to efficiently study biologically relevant molecular folding behaviors we have developed new techniques based on Monte Carlo solution, master equation calculation, and non-linear dimensionality reduction to run simulations and analysis on the roadmap. The first method, Map-based master equation calculation (MME), extracts global properties of the folding landscape such as global folding rates. On the other hand, another method, Map-based Monte Carlo solution (MMC), can be used to extract microscopic features of the folding process. Also, the application of dimensionality reduction returns a lower-dimensional representation that still retains the principal features while facilitating both modeling and analysis of motion landscapes. A key contribution of our methods is the flexibility to study larger and more complex structures, e.g., 372 residue Alpha-1 antitrypsin and 200 nucleotide ColE1 RNAII. We also applied intelligent roadmap-based techniques to the area of robotic motion. These methods take advantage of unsupervised learning methods at all stages of the planning process and produces solutions in complex spaces with little cost and less manual intervention compared to other adaptive methods. Our results show that our methods have low overhead and that they out-perform two existing adaptive methods in all complex cases studied.

A method was described for determining the wave forms of the displacement in the direction of, and perpendicu lar to the external radial load, for any radial load and positive radial looseness. It was shown that the variable elastic compliance motion does not follow a sine curve. In addition to vibrations in the fundamental frequency, cor responding to the frequency of ball passage, harmonics of higher order are present. This re port presents a method to determine the ampli tudes of the harmonics of velocity components of the variable compliance motion in radially loaded, zero contact angle, ball bearings in the direc tion of, and perpendicular to the external radial load. The method is based on harmonic analysis of the waveform computed according to Report L60LO23. The method was applied to a bearing with seven balls. Curves showing the amplitudes of the nine first harmonics are pre sented for this case. An extension of the method to other ball complements requires some further programming and computer work, but is otherwise straight-forward. (Author).

Book excerpt: This thesis considers the optimization and simulation of motions involving rigid body systems. It does so in three distinct parts, with the following topics: optimization and analysis of human high-diving motions, efficient numerical integration of rigid body dynamics with contacts, and motion optimization of a two-link robot arm using Finite-Time Lyapunov Analysis.The first part introduces the concept of eigenpostures, which we use to simulate and analyze human high-diving motions. Eigenpostures are used in two different ways: first, to reduce the complexity of the optimal control problem that we solve to obtain such motions, and second, to generate an eigenposture space to which we map existing real world motions to better analyze them. The benefits of using eigenpostures are showcased through different examples.The second part reviews an extensive list of integration algorithms used for the integration of rigid body dynamics. We analyze the accuracy and stability of the different integrators in the three-dimensional space and the rotation space SO(3). Integrators with an accuracy higher than first order perform more efficiently than integrators with first order accuracy, even in the presence of contacts.The third part uses Finite-time Lyapunov Analysis to optimize motions for a two-link robot arm. Finite-Time Lyapunov Analysis diagnoses the presence of time-scale separation in the dynamics of the optimized motion and provides the information and methodology for obtaining an accurate approximation to the optimal solution, avoiding the complications that timescale separation causes for alternative solution methods.
