Book excerpt: This study documents and interprets the spatial and temporal variation of Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) structure during the latter stages of a Cold Air Outbreak (CAO) along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, 8 March 1986, Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment (GALE). Two C-band pulsed Doppler radars, one at Ocracoke and the other at Cape Hatteras, were used to collect reflectivity and radial velocity data in the chaff-filled MABL. The single Doppler analysis technique known as Velocity Azimuth Display, henceforth VAD (Browning and Wexler, 1968), was used to attain numerical values for a variety of kinematic properties. Time-height plots of horizontal wind spread, vertical velocity, horizontal divergence and deformation were constructed to depict the temporal variation of the MABL. Horizontal wind speed and direction versus altitude were plotted for each VAD analysis in order that anomalies in the MABL wind profiles may be identified and explained. The VAD analysis radius was varied between 5 and 15 kilometers so that spatial distribution of the wind field could also be observed. Chaff was dispersed by aircraft at a distance equivalent to 40 minutes travel distance upwind from the radar network. (R.H.).

The effectiveness of the instrument in acquiring data with which models of near bottom flows in the ocean can be tested is demonstrated by the results of a field experiment in Vineyard Sound. The instrument uses four sensors which measure the mean and fluctuating parts parts of the three components of the velocity vector at four heights above the sea bed. The sensors employ the acoustic travel time difference technique, and are designed to minimize sensor-induced flow disturbances. BASS, an acronym for Benthic Acoustic Stress Sensor, has a resolution of .033 cm/sec per least bit, a range of + or - cm/sec, noise of .07 cm/sec in 10 sec, and an estimated accuracy of + or - 5 cm/sec, referred to an in situ zero point. A complete set of velocity measurements is made every .750 seconds, each measurement being the vector component averaged over 15 cm. The data is internally recorded on digital cassette tape. Eight hours of continuous data can be recorded. BASS was deployed in a tidal flow in Vineyard Sound at a depth of 10 m where a time series of u, v, and w velocities at 26 cm, 46 cm, 96 cm, and 210 cm above the bottom was recorded.

The main finding from the field observations is the ubiquity of drizzle in marine stratocumulus even when cloud thickness is as little as 250 m. Diagnosis of this drizzle became possible through the use of the Wyoming Cloud Radar on the NSF/NCAR C-130 research aircraft. In addition, the drizzle provided a suitable target for velocity measurements, so that we were able to obtain the first ever two-dimensional depictions of circulations within the marine boundary layer.

The Wide Aperture Research Facility (WARF), a high-resolution skywave high-frequency (HF) radar located in central California, was used to obtain remote measurements of the ocean wave spectrum, overwater wind velocity, and ocean currents in the North Pacific Ocean. The ocean currents were determined by tracking drogued and undrogued drifting buoys carrying a low-power HF repeater. Three types of sea backscatter Doppler spectra were recorded to determine the ocean wave spectrum and the wind velocity: (1) Backscatter from wide areas of the ocean to develop techniques for mapping wind fields, (2) Backscatter from limited areas near research vessels, Navy ships, and ships of opportunity to correlate the observed and radar-measured wind field; (3) Long-term coherent samples of backscatter for high-resolution off-line processing to derive the ocean wave spectrum.

Book excerpt: A description and rough cataloguing of the dominant types of fluid dynamic features which may be expected to yield trackable radar targets in the atmospheric boundary layer is provided. Conditions favorable for target motion relative to the ambient wind velocity are discussed. One particularly interesting type of wave generated target is that involving Kelvin-Helmholtz wave breaking which occurs when a wave of sufficient amplitude passes through a slightly stable fluid shear layer. This type of wave breaking is examined numerically using A.R.A.P.'s second-order closure turbulence model. This normalized computation allows the evolution of the radar pattern for this particular type of event to be interpreted in terms of the temperature, humidity, and velocity across a particular shear zone, and the wave speed of the triggering internal wave.
