A high-power Free Electron Laser (FEL) is being designed using short Rayleigh-length resonators to increase the spot size at the mirrors and hence avoid mirror damage. Three-dimensional simulations are used to study the effects of an electron beam misalignment (electron beam tilt). This thesis shows that the proposed design is tolerant of typical electron beam misalignments. The performance of a step-tapered undulator is also studied for the 100 kW proposed upgrade of the Jefferson Laboratory FEL. The results of this research show that the gain is above the required threshold for the 100 kW design while the energy spread does not change significantly over any undulator design. The spectrum of the proposed FEL shows that most of the power is concentrated around the fundamental frequency. It is shown in this thesis that smooth FEL pulses can significantly reduce the negative effects of absorption and scattering. Recent HEL science and technology developments are discussed for both Free Electron and Solid State Lasers.

Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Book excerpt: The Free Electron Laser (FEL) can provide the naval surface combatant with a directed energy weapon that can be used against a large target set. Due to space constraints in a shipboard installation, an exploration is conducted to show the feasibility of short Rayleigh length FELs using a FEL simulation. Low atmosphere engagements are discussed through the modeling of a turbulence module for laser propagation in cruise missile defense applications. In particular, this thesis explores the difficulties in engaging a short/medium range theater ballistic missile (TBM) in the terminal phase as an engagement scenario in support of littoral operations using HELCoMES, developed by SAIC, as an engagement analysis tool. A concept of operations (CONOPS) for the use of a FEL as an area TBM defensive weapon is explored, using a unitary, high explosive warhead model and extrapolations to other TBM warhead types.

Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of lasers as weapons, it is necessary to understand how a laser propagates through a complex medium. For the U.S. Navy, the complexity of a maritime environment imposes particular challenges for laser propagation due to high concentrations of water high concentrations of water vapor and high probabilities of liquid water in the form of fog, rain, or sea spray along the beam path. Although considerable research has gone into characterizing the maritime environment and simulating laser propagation through water vapor and turbulence, the interactions between a high energy laser (HEL) and liquid water are poorly understood. A project is taking place in the U.S. Naval Academy’s Directed Energy Research Center to investigate the interaction of a high energy laser and single water droplets. An HEL is used to irradiate droplets of water, and the droplet shape and size, the infrared radiation from the droplet, and the transmitted beam profile are measured and recorded. To control the droplet shape, it will be levitated using a commercial ultrasonic levitator, where the drop is held in place at a node by the pressure from a standing sound wave. The results of this experiment will provide an understanding of the coupled interaction between an HEL and a water droplet.

The main objective of this study is to discuss the optimum laser wavelength and power for efficient propagation in maritime, desert, rural and urban atmospheric environments. The theoretical/numerical model used in this study includes the effects of aerosol and molecular scattering, aerosol heating and vaporization, thermal blooming due to aerosol and molecular absorption, atmospheric turbulence, and beam quality. These processes are modeled in a fully three-dimensional and time-dependent manner. It is found that aerosol particles are particularly important because they result in laser scattering, absorption and enhanced thermal blooming. In the water vapor transmission windows, the total absorption coefficient driving thermal blooming can be caused mainly by aerosols and not water vapor. In certain maritime environments the deleterious effects of aerosols can be reduced by vaporization. Aerosol particles which cannot be vaporized, such as those Consisting of dust, soot, etc., can significantly increase thermal blooming. The optimum wavelength and power for propagation are found for each atmospheric environment.

Book excerpt: Navy officials announced in April 2013 that a solid-state laser would be deployed onboard the U.S.S. Ponce, providing the first at-sea demonstration of a revolutionary directed energy weapon. The demonstration is part of a wider portfolio of near-term Navy directed energy programs that promise rapid fielding, demonstration and prototyping efforts for shipboard, airborne and ground systems. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Sea Systems Command recently performed demonstrations of high-energy lasers aboard a moving surface combatant ship, as well as against remotely piloted aircraft. Through careful planning of such demonstrations and by leveraging investments made through other DoD agencies, researchers have been able to increase the ruggedness, power and beam quality of lasers, more than doubling the range of the weapons. This book includes a detailed report on the laser program, Navy Shipboard Lasers for Surface, Air, and Missile Defense: Background and Issues for Congress. Contents include: Scope, Sources, and Terminology * Background * Shipboard Lasers in General * Potential Advantages and Limitations of Shipboard Lasers * Potential Targets for Shipboard Lasers * Required Laser Power Levels for Countering Targets * Types of Lasers Being Developed for Potential Shipboard Use * Fiber Solid State Lasers (Fiber SSLs). * Slab Solid State Lasers (Slab SSLs) * Free Electron Lasers (FELs) * Navy Surface Fleet's Generalized Vision for Shipboard Lasers * Remaining Technical Challenges * ONR Solid-State Laser Technology Maturation Effort * Naval Directed Energy Steering Group * Directed Energy Vision for U.S. Naval Forces * Destroyers and LCSs Reportedly Leading Candidate Platforms * FY2012 Congressional Report Language * FY2012 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 1540/P.L. 112-81) * FY2012 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies * Appropriations Act (H.R. 2055/P.L. 112-74) * FY2013 Funding Request * Issues for Congress * Program of Record and Roadmap * Arguments Against Developing a Roadmap or Program of Record. * Arguments Supporting Developing a Roadmap or Program of Record * Number of Laser Types to Continue Developing * Potential Strategies * Relative Merits of Laser Types * Implications for Ship Design and Acquisition * Options for Congress * Legislative Activity for FY2013 * FY2013 Funding Request. "The future is here," said Peter A. Morrision, program officer for ONR's Sold-State Laser Technology Maturation Program. "The solid-state laser is a big step forward to revolutionizing modern warfare with directed energy, just as gunpowder did in the era of knives and swords." Officials consider the solid-state laser a revolutionary technology that gives the Navy an extremely affordable, multi-mission weapon with a deep magazine and unmatched precision, targeting and control functions. Because lasers run on electricity, they can be fired as long as there is power and provide a measure of safety as they don't require carrying propellants and explosives aboard ships.

Book excerpt: Department of Defense (DOD) development work on high-energy military lasers, which has been underway for decades, has reached the point where lasers capable of countering certain surface and air targets at ranges of about a mile could be made ready for installation on Navy surface ships over the next few years. More powerful shipboard lasers, which could become ready for installation in subsequent years, could provide Navy surface ships with an ability to counter a wider range of surface and air targets at ranges of up to about 10 miles. The Navy and DOD have conducted development work on three principal types of lasers for potential use on Navy surface ships-fiber solid state lasers (SSLs), slab SSLs, and free electron lasers (FELs). One fiber SSL prototype demonstrator developed by the Navy is the Laser Weapon System (LaWS). The Navy plans to install a LaWS system on the USS Ponce, a ship operating in the Persian Gulf as an interim Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB[I]), in the summer of 2014 to conduct continued evaluation of shipboard lasers in an operational setting. The Navy reportedly anticipates moving to a shipboard laser program of record in "the FY2018 time frame" and achieving an initial operational capability (IOC) with a shipboard laser in FY2020 or FY2021. Although the Navy is developing laser technologies and prototypes of potential shipboard lasers, and has a generalized vision for shipboard lasers, the Navy currently does not yet have a program of record for procuring a production version of a shipboard laser. The possibility of equipping Navy surface ships with lasers in coming years raises a number of potential issues for Congress, including the following:

Book excerpt: Under this MRI funded by HEL JTO and AFOSR, UCLA, in collaboration with Michigan Tech, Georgia Tech, MZA Associates Corporation, Tempest Technologies, Trex Enterprises Corporation, ATK Mission Research and the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), has established a comprehensive research program in high-performance control of high energy lasers (HEL), modeling and simulation of HEL, wavefront sensing, and target tracking. Under this program, researchers have developed adaptive filtering and control methods for wavefront prediction and correction and precise pointing of laser beams to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence, platform vibration, target motion and sensor noise, all of which degrade the performance of laser weapons and communication systems. The research team for this multidisciplinary research initiative has made a comprehensive, integrated attack on the broad range of modeling and simulation, beam control, and target tracking problems that must be solved to achieve the potential of high energy laser systems. This report discusses the main results of the research.
