Book excerpt: Fatigue properties of non-treated and carburized Ni-base IN718, Fe-base A286 and duplex stainless steel 2205 were investigated in fully-reversed uniaxial fatigue tests. The carburization process changes the fatigue crack initiation site of IN718 from surface-nucleated for the non-treated samples to centrally-nucleated for carburized samples. However, the fatigue lifetimes are not increased, because of defects that exist in the central areas of all the specimens functioning as weak points that served as sites for fatigue crack nucleation. The fatigue resistance of carburized A286 samples is modestly improved. Additionally, the fatigue strength coefficient and exponent of A286 are changed by carburization, which also effectively suppresses the formation of multiple crack nucleation sites at the surface. Carburized 2205 samples exhibited significant improvement in fatigue limit and fatigue lifetime compared to non-treated samples at the same cyclic stress, in spite of the existence of oxide inclusions, which act as centers for fatigue crack nucleation.

Book excerpt: Stainless steels are often used in marine applications due to their superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, stainless steels are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and corrosion fatigue. Fatigue occurs when cracks, which initiate as the result of cyclic loading, grow and eventually lead to fracture and component failure. For this reason, it is important to include fatigue in design considerations. Unfortunately, there is little data available for corrosion fatigue in marine environments. Most fatigue studies for materials in marine environments are conducted in aqueous solutions at ambient temperatures. In reality, marine environments can include periods of cyclic wetting and drying and variations in temperature. Furthermore, components often include design parameters that can shorten fatigue life such as crevices and mating surfaces. To better understand the behavior of stainless alloys in realistic marine environments, a series of high cycle fatigue tests were conducted on several alloys. Precipitation hardened and nickel alloys have been tested in environments including ambient air, immersion in solutions of 3.5 % sodium chloride (NaCl), and cyclic wetting environments at both ambient and elevated temperatures. Studies validated the importance of testing alloys in conditions representative of the actual service environment.

Book excerpt: Extensive characterization of low-cycle fatigue damage mechanisms was performed on polycrystalline René 80 and IN100 tested in the temperature range from 871 to 1000°C. Low-cycle fatigue life was found to be dominated by propagation of microcracks to a critical size governed by the maximum tensile stress. A model was developed which incorporates a threshold stress for crack extension, a stress-based crack growth expression, and a failure criterion. The mathematical equivalence between this mechanistically based model and the strain-life low-cycle fatigue law was demonstrated using cyclic stress-strain relationships. The model was shown to correlate the high-temperature low-cycle fatigue data of the different nickel-base superalloys considered in this study.
