Book excerpt: At a time in history when fear of ‘the other’ has become commonplace, The Broken Silence is a timely book that shows a glimpse in the timeline of how Islam has been marginalized in society. It examines the impacts of economic sanctions on vulnerable populations and opens with an important essay by the author’s daughter, published in the Huffington Post, that paints a bleak picture of the human costs of years of international sanctions against Iraq, including the deaths of over half a million children as reported by the United Nations. Her argument that desperate young people are driven to commit heinous acts of terror not out of religious fervour but as misguided reactions to injustices, is to this day, little recognized by politicians or the media. This powerful memoir explores the human cost of sanctions and the author’s tireless efforts over many years to promote awareness and activism to have those sanctions lifted. Mohammed Javed’s childhood and youth experiences instilled in him a commitment to compassion and caring. As the founder of I.LEAD (Islam. Learn. Engage. Achieve. Develop.), Mr. Javed brought together numerous groups and organizations to hold conferences to explore the many questions facing Muslims in the National Capital Region and beyond. Earlier, while living in Halifax, he became a regularly published op-ed writer. He also helped motivate Svend Robinson, then a Member of Parliament, to embrace the cause of lifting sanctions, and wrote many letters to the prime minister, cabinet ministers and interested MPs. Told with frank clarity and rounded out with copies of letters, emails, and articles, The Broken Silence explores the real causes of terrorism and its remedies. It also seeks to help non-Muslims to better understand this ancient religion and calls out to Muslims to explore the real values of Islam and regain its true spirit. Above all, it is a call for all ethnicities and religions to work collectively for a more peaceful, compassionate, and caring world for our children and grandchildren. Many thanks to: Lubna Javed Shamsia Quraishi Bassam Javed For the insightful editing service they have rendered for this work.

Book excerpt: ‘This work goes where other books fear to tread. It reaches the parts other scholars might imagine in their dreams but would neither have the international reach nor the critical acumen and forensic flourish to deliver.’ Alan Read, King's College London ‘This book is not only timely. It is overdue – and it is a masterpiece unrivalled by any book I know of.’ Erika Fischer-Lichte, Freie Universität Berlin ‘The first and only book that focuses on the intersections of performance, terror and terrorism as played out beyond a Euro-American context post-9/11. It is an important work, both substantively and methodologically.’ Jenny Hughes, University of Manchester ‘A profound and tightly bound sequence of reflections ... a rigorously provocative book.’ Stephen Barber, Kingston University London In this exceptional investigation Rustom Bharucha considers the realities of Islamophobia, the legacies of Truth and Reconciliation, the deadly certitudes of State-controlled security systems and the legitimacy of counter-terror terrorism, drawing on a vast spectrum of human cruelties across the global South. The outcome is a brilliantly argued case for seeing terror as a volatile and mutant phenomenon that is deeply lived, experienced, and performed within the cultures of everyday life.

Mark and his wife, Carol, set off for his parents' cottage for a week of relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The unexpected finding of a corpse in the cottage near the lake will trigger more and more suspenseful events. A story in which good meets evil in search for truth. Where love and pain go hand in hand, and death is waiting ... around every corner. Who will be the winner? It remains to be seen.

Book excerpt: Holocaust ruminations by Stein, who was born in Budapest in 1936 to an assimilated family. His mother decided to have her son and daughter baptized in a vain effort to save them from antisemitism. She was deported to her death, and her husband was blinded during forced labor. Stein was raped, but he and his sister survived. As a result of postwar antisemitism, he assumed a Protestant identity; he returned to a Jewish identity later in in life in Canada. Most of the book consists of imaginary dialogues between the author and his torturer (rapist), a victim (his mother), a spectator (a composite figure encompassing European non-Jews, the Allies, and New World Jews who failed to help and also lacked compassion, after the war, for survivors), a survivor (his mother's sister Sari, who tells how she "sold" her body to save her own and her sister's children), and a boy (himself). Reveals little of the objective details of the Holocaust, but a great deal of its effect on the soul of a child.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marrano phenomenon is a still unexplored element of Western culture: the presence of the borderline Jewish identity which avoids clear-cut cultural and religious attribution and – precisely as such – prefigures the advent of the typically modern "free-oscillating" subjectivity. Yet, the aim of the book is not a historical study of the Marranos (or conversos), who were forced to convert to Christianity, but were suspected of retaining their Judaism "undercover." The book rather applies the "Marrano metaphor" to explore the fruitful area of mixture and cross-over which allowed modern thinkers, writers and artists of the Jewish origin to enter the realm of universal communication – without, at the same time, making them relinquish their Jewishness which they subsequently developed as a "hidden tradition." The book poses and then attempts to prove the "Marrano hypothesis," according to which modern subjectivity derives, to paraphrase Cohen, "out of the sources of the hidden Judaism": modernity begins not with the Cartesian abstract ego, but with the rich self-reflexive self of Michel de Montaigne who wrestled with his own marranismo in a manner that soon became paradigmatic to other Jewish thinkers entering the scene of Western modernity, from Spinoza to Derrida. The essays in the volume offer thus a new view of a "Marrano modernity," which aims to radically transform our approach to the genesis of the modern subject and shed a new light on its secret religious life as surviving the process of secularization, although merely in the form of secret traces.
