Book excerpt: Hidden Treasure in Hard Times is an eight-part Bible study designed to prepare Christian believers for times of hardship and pain. It gives an overview of what the Bible has to say about suffering and is filled with Scriptures arranged by topic that can serve as a valuable reference during difficult times. As Jesus followers, we need to know the encouraging truths found in God's word that will help us find comfort and hope, as well as encourage us to honor God, during the suffering that comes our way. We need to know that God is with us, that he is working to redeem our suffering for his good purposes, and that in his hands none of our pain is ever wasted. In these studies, we'll explore why God allows our afflictions and discover that there are many benefits to be gained through a good response to suffering. We will learn how we should regard and respond to our trials and how we can find comfort, peace, and strength in the midst of them. We'll discover that God works through everything in the lives of his people for their good and his glory, as they yield to him in trust. As we uncover what God has to say about suffering, we will learn that there's a wealth of treasure to be discovered through our adversities. Gems of growth, glory, and a greater knowledge of Jesus are hidden among the jagged rocks of hardship we encounter along our paths of difficulty. Hidden Treasure in Hard Times is appropriate for use by individuals or groups. Though abundant withScripture and dense with biblical truth, each study can be thoughtfully read through in less than an hour. The content, however, will be better grasped with further meditation and review. The studies include: The Origin of Suffering and How God Redeems It God's Purposes and Our Benefits in Suffering Responding to Suffering through Lament Responding to God in Suffering--Beneficial Attitudes, Focus, and Practices God's Attributes and Ways / Faith and an Eternal Perspective God's Sovereignty and Involvement in Our Suffering Finding Comfort, Strength, and Peace in Suffering Perseverance and Joy / A Review and Call to Action These studies were authored by Jane Monks, an ordinary Christian woman who has gone through theschool of suffering, having endured severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for decades, as well as theinherent pain, loss, and discomfort that go with it. She diligently searched the Bible for years to learn thetruths explored in these studies, because knowing and practicing what God's word says about adversitywas, and is, a daily necessity. Jane needed to understand that a sovereign God was in control, was with her in her pain, and wasworking good things into her life through the pain and loss, whether she could see those things atpresent or not. She needed to know she could find contentment and joy in him, even though the illnesspersisted. She wanted to know how to respond to the adversity in ways that pleased God and helpedher draw near to him, because pleasing him was, and is, her heart's desire. She has learned to dependon God and find comfort in his sovereignty and grace. This book will not answer all the questions you may have about suffering. There are many things wehumans cannot grasp with our finite minds. This is where faith in our sovereign, good, and loving Godcomes in--his love having been proven on the cross, where the world's greatest evil and suffering wastransformed into the world's greatest good. This book will, however, give you a greater understandingof what Rom. 8:28 means when it says, "In all things God works for the good of those who love him"(NIV).
