Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We spend one-third of our lives in bed, and that’s just when sleeping! Yet most of us haven’t given thought to the toxic chemicals in our mattresses that we breathe in all night, or absorb through our skin. The bedroom should be a safe haven, but unfortunately more and more research reveals the bedroom may be one of the most toxic places in the home. Consider the average conventional mattress contains more toxic chemicals than a 50 gallon oil drum, and our skin, the largest organ of the body, is also the most porous entry point. It’s no wonder chemicals found in mattresses, known to cause toxic reproductive effects, are regularly found at significant levels in human blood samples. Walter Bader outlines the dangers of the variety of toxic threats lurking in the typical American bedroom so that, armed with this knowledge, you can defend yourself and your family against them

We live in a culture where toxic chemicals are just a part of life. Or so it sometimes seems. And they just seem to creep into our homes. Once toxic chemicals are in our homes, it may seem daunting, almost impossible, to get them out. We try everything, short of exorcism, to be rid of them. Sometimes nothing seems to work. Over 30 years of attempts, failures, and successes at ridding our homes of toxic chemicals have led to the creation of this plan. It takes a lot of work. And you will no doubt be overwhelmed by it at first. But the plan does work. And the end results are worth both the time and the effort. Removing toxic chemicals from a home often results in the inhabitants being better able to breathe, being sick less often, and having more energy. It takes time. But it can be accomplished step by step. Do as much as you can. And do what works for you. Then move on to the next step. You may need to come back to the first steps and perform the remaining tasks. But eventually, you will work out what works for you. You will work out what rids your home from toxic chemicals to the point that you can live at peace with your home again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one reviewer stated, "Living With The Enemy is a wake-up call for consumers. Where we feel safest (at home), we are at risk." Almost every household uses products containing dangerous chemical substances, most of which are synthetic (human made). What is worrying is that many of these products (for cleaning the home, personal hygiene, fragrances, decoration, entertainment, cosmetics, food, etc.) have been placed on the market without first properly investigating and notifying the public about the effects that long term exposures may have on our health and environment. Many of these chemicals, called endocrine disruptors (hormone disruptors) that contaminate the home, can even have an effect when present at parts per billion levels. This concentration is equivalent to adding 1 drop of ink to one of the largest tanker trucks used to haul gasoline. The vulnerability to adverse effects is greater in children, pregnant women, the fetus, and the elderly. The effects can sometimes be detected in both the short term (acute effect, especially in the fetus) but usually doesn't manifest itself until longer term (chronic) exposures in adults. Some short-term or acute effects in children and adults might include nausea, dizziness, itching, stinging, burning or irritation of the eyes, irritation of the skin or respiratory tract, (coughing, sneezing) etc. which may occur a short period of time (minutes) after the exposure. More serious long-term or chronic effects include allergies, asthma, respiratory diseases, diseases of the reproductive system, alteration of the hormonal system (endocrine disruption), neurological disorders, including lifetime loss of I.Q. and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), cancers, etc., which can be diagnosed long after exposures to low doses of the chemical substances. The lack of knowledge on the part of citizens and consumers about the toxic chemicals present in these products is proving to be a "hidden" emergency. Recently, scientists have given a quantitative essence to the urgency and impacts of these chemical exposures (endocrine disruptors) by estimating annual medical and work lost impacts. These figures amount to hundreds of billions of dollars of costs annually in both Europe and the United States. Some scientists consider the consequences of exposures to endocrine disruptors as a silent epidemic of worldwide proportions. In this book I explain where these chemicals are in the home, how to minimize exposures, who is most vulnerable, and what safer chemicals are available to use. I devote an entire Chapter on alternatives to toxic chemicals to help in numerous ways to reduce exposures to the toxic soup that surrounds us all. Another Chapter lists 26 ways to reduce the dangers of toxic chemicals in the home. To quote another reviewer, in part: "Read the book. Embrace the information. Make some easy changes. Improve your life."

Book excerpt: Funny, thought-provoking, and incredibly disturbing, Slow Death by Rubber Duck reveals that just the living of daily life creates a chemical soup inside each of us. Pollution is no longer just about belching smokestacks and ugly sewer pipes - now, it's personal. The most dangerous pollution has always come from commonplace items in our homes and workplaces. Smith and Lourie ingested and inhaled a host of things that surround all of us all the time. This book exposes the extent to which we are poisoned every day of our lives. For this book, over the period of a week - the kind of week that would be familiar to most people - the authors use their own bodies as the reference point and tell the story of pollution in our modern world, the miscreant corporate giants who manufacture the toxins, the weak-kneed government officials who let it happen, and the effects on people and families across the globe. Parents and concerned citizens will have to read this book. Key concerns raised in Slow Death by Rubber Duck: * Flame-retardant chemicals from electronics and household dust polluting our blood. * Toxins in our urine caused by leaching from plastics and run-of-the-mill shampoos, toothpastes and deodorant. * Mercury in our blood from eating tuna. * The chemicals that build up in our body when carpets and upholstery off-gas. Ultimately hopeful, the book empowers readers with some simple ideas for protecting themselves and their families, and changing things for the better. From the Hardcover edition.
