Book Synopsis The Hidden Psychology of Pain by : Dr. James Alexander
Download or read book The Hidden Psychology of Pain written by Dr. James Alexander and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic pain has been correctly described as the invisible crisis at the heart of contemporary life. Despite stunning advances in other areas of medical science, no similar breakthrough in the treatment of chronic pain has resulted from an exclusive focus on the body. Dr James Alexander’s young life was redefined by a tragic car accident in his late teens, and the chronic physical and emotional trauma inspired him to become a psychologist. Now pain-free, Dr Alexander has dedicated the last three decades of his life to helping others overcome similar challenges, specializing in the treatment of chronic pain and psychological trauma. His success is proof that recovery from chronic pain is possible, and this guide offers a valuable resource for working toward that goal. The recovery from chronic pain requires that we revisit and challenge the outdated attitudes and practices that have been used with little result. With the proliferation of medical and psychological research, for the first time we are at a point in history where these notions of pain recovery can be validated by research-based evidence. For too long, Dr Alexander feels, we have been looking in all the wrong places. Specifically, the problem lies at the core of our culture, which still treats the physical and nonphysical aspects of the human as separate experiences. This innovative program involves a journey of self-discovery, a new way to approach medical and psychological care of chronic pain, and advice on the most effective types of help to pursue.

Book Synopsis Black Suffering by : James Henry Harris
Download or read book Black Suffering written by James Henry Harris and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Suffering, James Henry Harris explores the nexus of injustices, privations, and pains that contribute to the daily suffering seen and felt in the lives of Black folks. This suffering is so normalized in American life that it often goes unnoticed, unseen, and even--more often--purposely ignored. The reality of Black suffering is both omnipresent and complicated--both a reaction to and a result of the reality of white supremacy, its psychological and historical legacy, and its many insidious and fractured expressions within contemporary culture. Because Black suffering is so wholly disregarded, it must be named, discussed, and analyzed. Black Suffering articulates suffering as an everyday reality of Black life. Harris names suffering's many manifestations, both in history and in the present moment, and provides a unique portrait of the ways Black suffering has been understood by others. Drawing on decades of personal experience as a pastor, theologian, and educator, Harris gives voice to suffering's practical impact on church leaders as they seek to forge a path forward to address this huge and troubling issue. Black Suffering is both a mixtape and a call to consciousness, a work that identifies Black suffering, shines a light on the insidious normalization of the phenomenon, and begins a larger conversation about correcting the historical weight of suffering carried by Black people. The book combines elements of memoir, philosophy, historical analysis, literary criticism, sermonic discourse, and even creative nonfiction to present a "remix" of the suffering experienced daily by Black people.

Book Synopsis Fast-Facts: Self-Esteem by : Kevin Everett FitzMaurice, M.S.
Download or read book Fast-Facts: Self-Esteem written by Kevin Everett FitzMaurice, M.S. and published by FitzMaurice Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Self-Esteem Is the Enemy Within • Self-Esteem Is the Problem in Relationships • Self-Esteem Is the Problem in Performing • Self-Esteem Is the Problem in Spirituality • Recognize, Remove, & Replace Self-Esteem Collection of Tables • This book is a collection of tables that provide fast information regarding destructive self-esteem. • Self-esteem is the modern name for the ego; therefore, the tables are about self-esteem and the ego. • The ego and self-esteem are experienced as collections of competing self-constructions. Self-Constructions • Self-constructions are positive and negative mental objects, commonly known as positive and negative self-images and self-concepts. • These self-constructions are reified thoughts, also known as thought-things, and calcified, concretized, and crystalized thoughts. • Use our tables to cut through the jargon and get to the heart of how to recognize, remove, and replace the ego to stop it from destroying and interfering with your goals and life. Stop Being Self-Esteem • You don’t just have self-esteem because you identify yourself as it. • For example, if you are insulted or praised, you tend to collect self-esteem images of the insults and praise and think of them as yourself. • You might envision yourself as smart or stupid, beautiful or ugly, loved or hated. • However, you tend to think you are these mental objects (thought-things) instead of a being having them. Self-Esteem Drives • You often want others to see you as positive self-constructions and go out of your way to make that happen. • Likewise, you often don’t want others to see you as negative self-constructions and go out of your way to prevent that. • Again, it is not a matter of just having ideas about yourself; it is the problem of trying to live as ideas. • Wanting yourself and others to experience you as beautiful mental objects leads to the destruction of your authentic self and every form of emotional, mental, and physical violence. Self-Esteem Is Not You • These self-esteem (ego) representations of yourself are not yourself. • They interfere with your goals, performance, and relationships. • Putting human thought in charge cannot produce positive results because it has no abilities or powers. • Self-esteem (ego) is the enemy within because it is at the root of all human problems and misery. • Sometimes, you can claim to be positive things before or after a performance but not during because that always causes errors and failures. • Sometimes, you might use self-confidence to pray for good results and falsely credit self-confidence. • Looking inside, you will see that self-esteem (ego) is never responsible for anything other than interference and misdirection. • Self-esteem is silly nonsense that is, at best, empty words and, at worst, the center of your life as collections of dead things. Not All Tables Made Equal You will favor and respond to some tables more than others. Some tables have enough content to deserve a book; others only fill themselves. Focus on the ones that help you the most. Come back later and reread the book for deeper insights, more connections (neural links), and new relevant tables. The repetition of ideas in the tables will help you deepen your understanding by networking the ideas and applying them to new circumstances. The tables were originally published on our website at this link: https://kevinfitzmaurice.com/lists-and-links/quotations-topics/free-fast-facts/. We have Fast-Facts on many topics. The website link for this Fast-Facts series (self-esteem, ego) now points to this book. The original format has been changed. The original tables have been subject to being added to, edited, discontinued, improved, reformatted, renamed, revised, rewritten, and updated. And new and original tables have been added. Typically, the entry title in the table of contents comes from the title in the table; however, there are some exceptions because of space constraints or formatting considerations. Like in the original version, this version is organized alphabetically. This book will not be available as an audiobook because it consists of tables of information that are visually orientated, difficult to represent verbally, and impossible to read grammatically without change. Some spirituality and religion are included in some tables. However, they are optional for understanding or implementing the helpful insights, suggestions, and solutions provided. You can learn from any source you choose. Wisdom should be accepted wherever it is found. One should accept the truth from whatever source it proceeds. —Maimonides Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. —Philippians 4:8
Book Synopsis Hurting Happiness by : Emmanuel Oghenebrorhie
Download or read book Hurting Happiness written by Emmanuel Oghenebrorhie and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much as Josephs older siblings must have been happy that God used him to save them and their families from dying of starvation during the famine of their generation, there is no doubt that they lived the rest of their lives with regret that they had made attempt on Josephs life earlier. No one is usually happy to have to depend on his or her enemy for survival at any point in time. Many of us are merely enduring the help and support we live on because we lack the preferred alternative. Most of mans sources of joy have their allied regrets that he has to endure in order to enjoy the benefits in a sane manner.
Book Synopsis The Tender Cut by : Patricia A. Adler
Download or read book The Tender Cut written by Patricia A. Adler and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cutting, burning, branding, and bone-breaking are all types of self-injury, of the deliberate, non-suicidal destruction of one's own body tissue, a practice that emerged from obscurity in the 1990s and spread dramatically as a typical behavior among adolescents. Long considered a suicidal gesture, The Tender Cut argues instead that self-injury is often a coping mechanism, a form of teenage angst, and expression of group membership, and a type of rebellion, converting unbearable emotional pain into manageable physical pain. An important portrait of a troubling behavior, The Tender Cut illuminates the meaning of self-injury in the 21st century, its effects on current and former users, and its future as a practice for self-discovery or a cry for help."--P. [4] of cover.
