Book excerpt: Use the Internet. Know its dangers. Internet use is catching on faster than any form of technology ever invented. Its potential for human benefit is beyond measure. But it is not without problems: - Marriages break up over emotional relationships forged in chat rooms. - College students risk grades and health to spend time online. - Child abusers lure kids by contact through the internet. - Adults spend fortunes to subscribe to internet pornography. These people have crossed the boundary between healthy use and obsessive preoccupation with this versatile electronic medium. An avid net-surfer himself, therapist Gregory Jantz has seen an increasing number of clients coming to his counseling centers for help with internet abuse. Jantz writes for two audiences: those who are worried about a loved one's use of the net, and internet users who may have a problem. He offers both groups concrete and biblical steps for working towards change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous changes in technology since the year 2000 have increased the availability of the Internet, increased the amount of Internet activity among children, and expanded the age range of Internet users. Children are in danger while in their own homes like never before. Dangers such as cyberbullying, sexting, identity theft, and terrorist radicalization are hidden dangers in a virtual minefield. Children are also at risk of damaging their online reputation that will prove to be costly in the future, if they do not learn how to avoid these dangers. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the Internet safety education for children in Virginia schools to determine if they are adequately preparing children for the online world. What minefields await children when they go online? What are Virginia schools doing now to educate children about the dangers and the proper usage of the Internet? What challenges may prevent teachers and schools from delivering a comprehensive Internet safety education program? While schools must comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) in order to receive e-funds for Internet access, merely preventing access while on school grounds is not enough. Congress passed the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act in 2008, identifying public schools as the educator of children to prepare them for Internet life. The act requires public schools to educate their students about cyberbullying, online safety, and sexual predators. Much of how the school system complies with this act remains up to the individual school district; therefore, they may not be giving this the proper attention. Schools have an obligation to provide safety education to students. Keywords: Cybersecurity, Professor Chris Riddell, First Amendment, Cyberethics, Cybersafety, Character Education.

These individuals are likely luring profiles or hiding in chat rooms in search of vulnerable children. Predators know that a growing number of children are now on the Internet, therefore, they monopolize the opportunity because it allows easy access and increased chances to privately communicate with them. Unfortunately, predators are not the only threat online. According to research there are over 5 million Facebook users under the age of 10, although Facebook prohibits users under the age of 13, (Hopkinson, 2015). In addition, there are over 80 million fake profiles on Facebook (Chauhan, 2016). With the increase accessibility of social media, criminals often create fake profiles online to capitalize on the opportunity to steal more than identity. Parents, beware! Book excerpt: Whether we are checking emails, following friends on Facebook and Twitter, catching up on gossip from TMZ, planning holidays on TripAdvisor, arranging dates on Match.com, watching videos on Youtube, or simply browsing for deals on Amazon, the Internet pervades our professional and personal environments. The Internet has revolutionized our lives, but at what cost? In The Internet Trap, Ashesh Mukherjee uses the latest research in consumer psychology to highlight five hidden costs of living online: too many temptations, too much information, too much customization, too many comparisons, and too little privacy. The book uses everyday examples to explain these costs including how surfing the Internet anonymously can encourage bad behavior, using social media can make us envious and unhappy, and doing online research can devalue the product finally chosen. The book also provides actionable solutions to minimize these costs. For example, the book reveals how deciding not to choose is as important as deciding what to choose, setting up structural barriers to temptation can reduce overspending on e-commerce websites, and comparisons with others on social media websites needs to be cold rather than hot. The Internet Trap provides a new perspective on the dark side of the Internet, and gives readers the tools to become smarter users of the Internet.

We now face intangible threats that permeate globalized communication platforms, threatening not only the bodies, but also the minds and souls of our children. It is imperative that we be alert to these camouflaged dangers that surround our little ones. Our children are not only subject to falls and scratches; they are exposed to malicious predators who aim to distort their perceptions of the world and cause emotional and psychological harm. In the naivety of youth, they do not have the mechanisms to protect themselves from unscrupulous adults who exploit their innocence. As guardians of our children, it is our responsibility to know the threats brought by modernity and combat their harmful effects. Every effective strategy begins with clarified and updated knowledge. We must be well informed about the tactics and methods used by predators to better protect our little ones. Ignoring the latent and silent danger that threatens the integrity of our children is not an option. We need to become increasingly specialized to understand how these evil agents operate and how we can protect our children from their harm. Parents, educators, caregivers and everyone who cares about children's well-being must prioritize actions that close all the loopholes through which evildoers try to infiltrate. It is our duty to ensure that our children grow up in a safe environment, protected from negative influences that could compromise their healthy and happy development. This is a commitment that cannot be underestimated, as the future of our treasures is at stake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you thought hacking was just about mischief-makers hunched over computers in the basement, think again. As seasoned author Wallace Wang explains, hacking can also mean questioning the status quo, looking for your own truths and never accepting at face value anything authorities say or do. The completely revised fourth edition of this offbeat, non-technical book examines what hackers do, how they do it, and how you can protect yourself. Written in the same informative, irreverent, and entertaining style that made the first three editions hugely successful, Steal This Computer Book 4.0 will expand your mind and raise your eyebrows. New chapters discuss the hacker mentality, social engineering and lock picking, exploiting P2P file-sharing networks, and how people manipulate search engines and pop-up ads to obtain and use personal information. Wang also takes issue with the media for "hacking" the news and presenting the public with self-serving stories of questionable accuracy. Inside, you’ll discover: –How to manage and fight spam and spyware –How Trojan horse programs and rootkits work and how to defend against them –How hackers steal software and defeat copy-protection mechanisms –How to tell if your machine is being attacked and what you can do to protect it –Where the hackers are, how they probe a target and sneak into a computer, and what they do once they get inside –How corporations use hacker techniques to infect your computer and invade your privacy –How you can lock down your computer to protect your data and your personal information using free programs included on the book’s CD If you’ve ever logged onto a website, conducted an online transaction, sent or received email, used a networked computer or even watched the evening news, you may have already been tricked, tracked, hacked, and manipulated. As the saying goes, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you. And, as Wallace Wang reveals, they probably are. The companion CD contains hundreds of megabytes of 100% FREE hacking and security related programs, like keyloggers, spyware stoppers, port blockers, IP scanners, Trojan horse detectors, and much, much more. CD compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux.
