Book excerpt: North East England is rarely associated with the African slave trade, but research has shown that the region was inextricably involved in that shocking state-sanctioned traffic in human beings. This title reveals the links between some of the North East's wealthiest, most prominent families and the plantations of the New World.

This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Markov chains and hidden Markov chains have applications in many areas of engineering and genomics. This book provides a basic introduction to the subject by first developing the theory of Markov processes in an elementary discrete time, finite state framework suitable for senior undergraduates and graduates. The authors then introduce semi-Markov chains and hidden semi-Markov chains, before developing related estimation and filtering results. Genomics applications are modelled by discrete observations of these hidden semi-Markov chains. This book contains new results and previously unpublished material not available elsewhere. The approach is rigorous and focused on applications.

Book excerpt: Here is a work that adds much to the sum of our knowledge in a key area of science today. It is concerned with the estimation of discrete-time semi-Markov and hidden semi-Markov processes. A unique feature of the book is the use of discrete time, especially useful in some specific applications where the time scale is intrinsically discrete. The models presented in the book are specifically adapted to reliability studies and DNA analysis. The book is mainly intended for applied probabilists and statisticians interested in semi-Markov chains theory, reliability and DNA analysis, and for theoretical oriented reliability and bioinformatics engineers.

Book excerpt: Dragon shifters, fake identities, and betrayal; secrets that will either turn two strangers into bitter enemies or forge a passionate, burning love with the strength to last an eternity… Sent halfway across the world in her identical twin sister’s place to sign a contract with a reclusive billionaire, Katy Toure has no idea what she’s walking into. Before she signs anything, however, she meets the most amazing, drop-dead gorgeous man of her dreams. Even if all she can have with him is one night, she can’t resist the hunger in his eyes or the way he makes her body sing. Ryker Draquonir, king of the dragon shifters, takes one look at the woman sent to sign a contract with him, a contemporary marriage of convenience, and knows she is an impostor. Fate has stepped in after centuries on his own to give him his heart’s desire; for the woman standing before him is his true mate. Ancient Draquonir law forbids Ryker from revealing the existence of dragons and other magical creatures to her before he has claimed her, so if he wants a chance at happily ever after, he will have to seduce her to get it; woo her as only a billionaire can. Dragons love to hunt, and he will do anything to capture his true mate’s heart. *** If you love magic and paranormal romance in the style of Christine Feehan, J.R. Ward, Lara Adrian, S. E. Book excerpt: The study of ecological systems is often impeded by components that escape perfect observation, such as the trajectories of moving animals or the status of plant seed banks. These hidden components can be efficiently handled with statistical modeling by using hidden variables, which are often called latent variables. Notably, the hidden variables framework enables us to model an underlying interaction structure between variables (including random effects in regression models) and perform data clustering, which are useful tools in the analysis of ecological data. This book provides an introduction to hidden variables in ecology, through recent works on statistical modeling as well as on estimation in models with latent variables. All models are illustrated with ecological examples involving different types of latent variables at different scales of organization, from individuals to ecosystems. Readers have access to the data and R codes to facilitate understanding of the model and to adapt inference tools to their own data.

Book excerpt: BECOMING! A piece of canvas becomes a work of art Once the artist makes his final mark. A piece of stone becomes a sculpture Once the sculptor chips away the last chip. For a poet, A plain piece of paper becomes a priceless gem Once he finally lifts his pen. God is the artist That's painting beauty within the heart of our soul. God is the sculptor. That's chipping away at the flaws in our character To make us into His perfect image. God is the poet That would turn the plainness of our lives Into poetic praise. Contained within this volume are words of prose that were written while in the process of becoming. (ORGANIZED ALPHABETICALLY BY TITLE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Markov Chains: Models, Algorithms and Applications has been completely reformatted as a text, complete with end-of-chapter exercises, a new focus on management science, new applications of the models, and new examples with applications in financial risk management and modeling of financial data. This book consists of eight chapters. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to the classical theory on both discrete and continuous time Markov chains. The relationship between Markov chains of finite states and matrix theory will also be highlighted. Some classical iterative methods for solving linear systems will be introduced for finding the stationary distribution of a Markov chain. The chapter then covers the basic theories and algorithms for hidden Markov models (HMMs) and Markov decision processes (MDPs). Chapter 2 discusses the applications of continuous time Markov chains to model queueing systems and discrete time Markov chain for computing the PageRank, the ranking of websites on the Internet. Chapter 3 studies Markovian models for manufacturing and re-manufacturing systems and presents closed form solutions and fast numerical algorithms for solving the captured systems. In Chapter 4, the authors present a simple hidden Markov model (HMM) with fast numerical algorithms for estimating the model parameters. An application of the HMM for customer classification is also presented. Chapter 5 discusses Markov decision processes for customer lifetime values. Customer Lifetime Values (CLV) is an important concept and quantity in marketing management. The authors present an approach based on Markov decision processes for the calculation of CLV using real data. Chapter 6 considers higher-order Markov chain models, particularly a class of parsimonious higher-order Markov chain models. Efficient estimation methods for model parameters based on linear programming are presented. Contemporary research results on applications to demand predictions, inventory control and financial risk measurement are also presented. In Chapter 7, a class of parsimonious multivariate Markov models is introduced. Again, efficient estimation methods based on linear programming are presented. Applications to demand predictions, inventory control policy and modeling credit ratings data are discussed. Finally, Chapter 8 re-visits hidden Markov models, and the authors present a new class of hidden Markov models with efficient algorithms for estimating the model parameters. Applications to modeling interest rates, credit ratings and default data are discussed. This book is aimed at senior undergraduate students, postgraduate students, professionals, practitioners, and researchers in applied mathematics, computational science, operational research, management science and finance, who are interested in the formulation and computation of queueing networks, Markov chain models and related topics. Readers are expected to have some basic knowledge of probability theory, Markov processes and matrix theory.

A companion volume (Payne & Lane, 1998) contains papers describing the Short Communications and Posters. COMPSTAT is a one-week conference held every two years under the auspices of the International Association of Statistical Computing, a section of the International Statistical Institute. COMPSTAT'98 is organised by IACR-Rothamsted, IACR-Long Ashton, the University of Bristol Department of Mathematics and the University of Bath Department of Mathematical Sciences. It is taking place from 24-28 August 1998 at University of Bristol. Previous COMPSTATs (from 1974-1996) were in Vienna, Berlin, Leiden, Edinburgh, Toulouse, Prague, Rome, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, Neuchatel, Vienna and Barcelona. The conference is the main European forum for developments at the interface between statistics and computing. This was encapsulated as follows in the COMPSTAT'98 Call for Papers. Statistical computing provides the link between statistical theory and applied statistics. The scientific programme of COMPSTAT ranges over all aspects of this link, from the development and implementation of new computer-based statistical methodology through to innovative applications and software evaluation. The programme should appeal to anyone working in statistics and using computers, whether in universities, industrial companies, research institutes or as software developers.
