Book Synopsis The Palgrave Encyclopedia of the Possible by : Vlad Petre Glăveanu
Download or read book The Palgrave Encyclopedia of the Possible written by Vlad Petre Glăveanu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-25 with total page 1812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palgrave Encyclopedia of the Possible represents a comprehensive resource for researchers and practitioners interested in an emerging multidisciplinary area within psychology and the social sciences: the study of how we engage with and cultivate the possible within self, society and culture. Far from being opposed either to the actual or the real, the possible engages with concrete facts and experiences, with the result of transforming them. This encyclopedia examines the notion of the possible and the concepts associated with it from standpoints within psychology, philosophy, sociology, neuroscience and logic, as well as multidisciplinary fields of research including anticipation studies, future studies, complexity theory and creativity research. Presenting multiple perspectives on the possible, the authors consider the distinct social, cultural and psychological processes - e.g., imagination, counterfactual thinking, wonder, play, inspiration, and many others - that define our engagement with new possibilities in domains as diverse as the arts, design and business.
Book Synopsis The Commentary of Conrad of Prussia on the De Ente et Essentia of St. Thomas Aquinas by : Joseph Bobik
Download or read book The Commentary of Conrad of Prussia on the De Ente et Essentia of St. Thomas Aquinas written by Joseph Bobik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. THE MAN, CONRAD OF PRUSSIA Conrad of Prussia is not so much as mentioned in any of the usual sources. And even such notable mediaevalists as Mlle. Marie-Therese d'Alverny, Conservateur en-chef, and J. Reginald O'Donnell, C.S.B., of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto, Canada, have been unable to identify him. Nothing at all, therefore, is known about Conrad, if that is the author's name. For there is some doubt that it is. In the colophon of the Admont commentary on Aquinas' De Ente et Essentia,! we find a word, so completely erased that it is illegible, followed by the words "de Prusya." Martin Grabmann argues that it is correct to feel that the erasure is an erasure of the name "Conradi," since in the colophon of the Admont commentary on Dominicus Gundissalinus' De Unitate et Uno,2 which follows the commentary on the De Ente et Essentia, we find again an erased word followed by the words "de Prusya." But the erasure is not complete. One can here read the name "Conradi." 3 And so, the manuscript of the commentary on the De Unitate et Uno clearly attributed this work to Conrad of Prussia before the attempted erasure
Book Synopsis At the Limits of Presentation by : Martta Heikkilä
Download or read book At the Limits of Presentation written by Martta Heikkilä and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the significance of art in Jean-Luc Nancy's philosophy. The main object of the work is to discuss the notion of art and its contribution to some of Nancy's central ontological ideas. Art's importance is considered in its own right - the main questions being whether art does have ontological significance, and if so, how one should describe this with respect to the theme of presentation. According to the work's central argument, with his thinking on art Nancy attempts to give one viewpoint to what is called the metaphysics of presence and to its deconstruction. On which grounds may one say that art is not reducible to philosophy? These topics are examined by highlighting the differentiation between the notions of «presentation» and «representation» with regard to the influence of Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida on Nancy's thought.
Book Synopsis On Jean-Luc Nancy by : Darren Sheppard
Download or read book On Jean-Luc Nancy written by Darren Sheppard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to consider the increasing importance of Jean-Luc Nancy's work, which has influenced key thinkers such as Jacques Derrida. All his major works have been translated into English, yet until now little has been made available on his place in contemporary philosophy. By showing how he situates his work in a contemporary context - the collapse of communism, the Gulf War, and the former Yugoslavia - this outstanding collection reveals how Nancy's engagement with Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Derrida makes him one of the key contemporary continental philosophers. Providing new perspectives on the issues of sense, art and community, these essays make it impossible to approach philosophy without reference to the work Jean-Luc Nancy.
Book Synopsis Order and Agency in Modernity by : Kwang-ki Kim
Download or read book Order and Agency in Modernity written by Kwang-ki Kim and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique analysis of three prominent theorists of modern sociology, theory is understood as implicitly, but importantly, reflecting especially modern problems of individual and social life. From the grand-theoretical systems of Talcott Parsons to the unique symbolic interactionism of Erving Goffman and the radically mundane ethnomethodology of Harold Garfinkel, a wide variety of noted sociological theories have addressed central issues of sociology against the backdrop of modern society. When this modern backdrop is brought into the foreground of analysis, sociological theories assume new depth and breadth and new historical significance. The author outlines features of the modern experience, drawing upon neglected cultural theorists of modernity, and then shows how these features of modernity are reflected and incorporated in the scholarship of Parsons, Goffman, and Garfinkel. The result is an original and eclectic analysis that illuminates previously overlooked dimensions to modern sociological theory, and suggests new possibilities for meaningful and rewarding comparisons between theoretical traditions.

Book Synopsis Ethics, Politics, Subjectivity by : Simon Critchley
Download or read book Ethics, Politics, Subjectivity written by Simon Critchley and published by Verso. This book was released on 1999 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ethics–Politics–Subjectivity, Simon Critchley takes up three questions at the centre of contemporary theoretical debate: What is ethical experience? What can be said of the subject who has this experience? What, if any, is the relation of ethical experience to politics? These questions are approached by way of a critical confrontation with a number of major thinkers, including Lacan, Genet, Blanchot, Nancy, Rorty and, in particular, Levinas and Derrida. Critchley offers a critical reconstruction of Levinas's notion of ethical experience and, questioning the religious pietism and political conservatism of the dominant interpretation of Levinas's work, develops an ethics of finitude which, far from being tragic, opens on to an experience of humour and the comic. Using this reading of Levinas as a way of unlocking the rich ethical potential of Derrida's work, Critchley outlines and defends the political possibilities of deconstruction. On the basis of Derrida's recent work, Critchley attempts to rethink notions of friendship, democracy, economics and technology.
