Book Synopsis Bioterrorism and Mass Casualty Preparedness in Hospitals, United States, 2003 by : Richard W. Niska
Download or read book Bioterrorism and Mass Casualty Preparedness in Hospitals, United States, 2003 written by Richard W. Niska and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the terrorism incidents of September 2001, the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Planning and Evaluation, Department of Health and Human Services, requested that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) survey hospitals regarding their preparedness for treating patients from bioterrorism attacks or mass casualty incidents. It provided funding to field a special supplement to the 2003 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). Data from the 2003 NHAMCS supplement will serve as a baseline for hospital terrorism preparedness because there were no major funding programs directed toward hospitals for this purpose prior to the start of the Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in fiscal year (FY) 2002. Even these funds had not yet been fully awarded to hospitals at the time this survey was fielded in 2003. Prior to the inception of the HRSA program, the Domestic Preparedness Program of the Department of Defense had not allocated any funding for hospitals, although it funded emergency response agencies.

Book excerpt: Although the probability of a domestic bioterrorist attack has been considered to be low, some characteristics of biological agents may make them appealing to terrorist. The information for the production of agents is readily available on the Internet, and the agents are relatively easy to grow and conceal. According to intelligence agencies, the possibility that terrorists may use chemical or biological materials may increase over the next decade.- Results in Brief, BIOTERRORISM: The National Preparedness & ActivitiesDespite federal efforts, significant concerns exist regarding preparedness at the state and local levels. As a result, the Federal Government is involved in a range of research activities related to the public health and medical consequences of a bioterrorist attack on the civilian population.BIOTERRORISM: THE NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS & ACTIVITIES is part of studies being done to enable the rapid identification of biological agents in a variety of settings: to develop new vaccines, antibodies, and to improve treatment for infectious diseases caused by biological agents, including developing and testing emergency response equipment. The GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE (GAO) is an agency that works for Congress and the American people. Download or read book Ready Or Not? written by Jeffrey Levi and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 7 years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent anthrax-laced mailings in Oct. of that year, and 3 years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast region, America has grown complacent about public health emergency preparedness. While significant progress has been made to better protect the country from health emergencies, funding for essential programs had been cut, putting these improvements in jeopardy. Additionally, a number of critical areas of preparedness still have significant gaps. This report assesses the level of preparedness in the states, evaluates the fed. government¿s role and performance, and offers recommendations for improving emergency preparedness. Tables and graphs.
Book Synopsis Bioterrorism and Public Health by : Vitali B. Mellehovitch
Download or read book Bioterrorism and Public Health written by Vitali B. Mellehovitch and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioterrorism poses a unique challenge to the medical care and public health systems. Unlike an explosion or chemical attack, which results in immediate and visible casualties, the public health impact of a biological attack can unfold gradually over time. Until a sufficient number of people arrive at the emergency rooms and doctors' offices complaining of similar illnesses, there may be no sign that an attack has taken place. The speed and accuracy with which the doctors and laboratories reach the correct diagnoses and report their findings to public health authorities has a direct impact on the number of people who become ill, and the number that die. The nation's ability to respond to a bioterrorist attack, therefore, depends crucially on the state of preparedness of its medical care systems and public health infrastructure. Public health experts have for years complained about the deterioration of the public health system through neglect and lack of funding. They warn that the nation is ill equipped and insufficiently prepared to respond to a bioterrorist attack. For example, they point out that there are too few medical personnel trained to spot biological attacks, a shortage of sophisticated laboratories to identify the agents, and inadequate supplies of drugs and vaccines to counteract the threat. They also contend that inadequate plans exist for setting up quarantines and emergency facilities to handle the sick and infectious victims. Improving public health preparedness and response capacity offers protection not only from bioterrorist attacks, but also from naturally occurring public health emergencies. Public health officials are increasingly concerned about our exposure and susceptibility to infectious disease and food-borne illness because of global travel, ubiquitous food imports, and the evolution of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. This book reviews critical issues in the US public system and its vulnerability or lack thereof to bioterrorism.
