Book Synopsis The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet by : Neil deGrasse Tyson
Download or read book The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet written by Neil deGrasse Tyson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller: "You gotta read this. It is the most exciting book about Pluto you will ever read in your life." —Jon Stewart When the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History reclassified Pluto as an icy comet, the New York Times proclaimed on page one, "Pluto Not a Planet? Only in New York." Immediately, the public, professionals, and press were choosing sides over Pluto's planethood. Pluto is entrenched in our cultural and emotional view of the cosmos, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, award-winning author and director of the Rose Center, is on a quest to discover why. He stood at the heart of the controversy over Pluto's demotion, and consequently Plutophiles have freely shared their opinions with him, including endless hate mail from third-graders. With his inimitable wit, Tyson delivers a minihistory of planets, describes the oversized characters of the people who study them, and recounts how America's favorite planet was ousted from the cosmic hub.

Book Synopsis Medical Harm by : Virginia Ashby Sharpe
Download or read book Medical Harm written by Virginia Ashby Sharpe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-02-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that up to thirteen percent of hospital admissions result from the adverse effects of diagnosis or treatment, and that almost seventy percent of iatrogenic complications are preventable. The obligation to 'do no harm' has been central to medical conduct since ancient times, yet iatrogenic illness has now come to be recognized as a significant risk factor in health care delivery. This book integrates history, philosophy, medical ethics and empirical data to examine the concept and phenomenon of medical harm. Issues covered include appropriateness of care, acceptable risk and practitioner accountability, and the book concludes with recommendations for limiting iatrogenic harm. Essential reading for medical ethicists, physicians and those involved in health care policy and administration, this stimulating and highly readable book will be of interest to all providers of health care, and many of their patients.
Book Synopsis The Shape of the Heart by : P. J. Vinken
Download or read book The Shape of the Heart written by P. J. Vinken and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 2000 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most widely recognised icon in the world is the human heart, as depicted, for example, on playing cards. But a heart has neither a dent nor fold in its base, it is not 'nipped in the waist' and it does not have a sharp point on its underside. Since the days of the ancient Greeks, anatomists have correctly reported that the heart is shaped like a pine cone or has the outline of an upturned pyramid. Why is the shape of such a popular icon so at variance with the heart's true form? It seems that the indentation or fold in the base of the heart first appeared in Northern Italy in the early years of the fourteenth century. It was the result of an error originally made in an anatomical text by Aristotle. In the sixteenth century, anatomists finally corrected the error, but, by that time, the scalloped heart icon had become so established in the visual arts that it could no longer be changed. This work also contains a section devoted to a cave, shaped like the interior of the heart, in an allegorical print by Jan Saenredarn (1604). The representation was a creation of Hendrik Spiegel (1549-1612), one of the fathers of Dutch grammar and a friend of Cornelis Cornelisz, Hendrik Goltzius and Karel van Mander.

Book Synopsis The Sublime Engine by : Stephen Amidon
Download or read book The Sublime Engine written by Stephen Amidon and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart has consistently captured the human imagination. It has been singled out as a cultural icon, the repository of our deepest religious and artistic impulses, the organ whose steady functioning is understood, both literally and symbolically, as the very life force itself. The Sublime Engine will explore the profound sense of awe every person feels when they ponder the miracle encased within their ribs. In this lyrical history of our most essential organ, a critically-acclaimed novelist and a leading cardiologist--who happen to be brothers--draw upon history, science, religion, popular culture, and literature to illuminate all of the heart's physical and figurative chambers. Each of the four sections-- The Ancient Heart, The Renaissance Heart, The Modern Heart, and The Future Heart--will focus on a major epoch in our understanding of the heart and the hidden history of cardiology. Erudite, witty, and enthralling, The Sublime Engine makes the heart come alive for readers.

Book Synopsis The Book of the Heart by : Eric Jager
Download or read book The Book of the Heart written by Eric Jager and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's increasingly electronic world, we say our personality traits are "hard-wired" and we "replay" our memories. But we use a different metaphor when we speak of someone "reading" another's mind or a desire to "turn over a new leaf"—these phrases refer to the "book of the self," an idea that dates from the beginnings of Western culture. Eric Jager traces the history and psychology of the self-as-text concept from antiquity to the modern day. He focuses especially on the Middle Ages, when the metaphor of a "book of the heart" modeled on the manuscript codex attained its most vivid expressions in literature and art. For instance, medieval saints' legends tell of martyrs whose hearts recorded divine inscriptions; lyrics and romances feature lovers whose hearts are inscribed with their passion; paintings depict hearts as books; and medieval scribes even produced manuscript codices shaped like hearts. "The Book of the Heart provides a fresh perspective on the influence of the book as artifact on our language and culture. Reading this book broadens our appreciation of the relationship between things and ideas."—Henry Petroski, author of The Book on the Bookshelf

Book Synopsis Scotland's Historic Heraldry by : Bruce A. McAndrew
Download or read book Scotland's Historic Heraldry written by Bruce A. McAndrew and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scottish heraldry begins in the mid thirteenth century, when material of Scottish interest first appears in a number of English and Continental rolls-of-arms. This early evidence, pre-dating the appearance of the Armorial de Gelre in 1370, has barely been explored, and a major contribution of Bruce McAndrew's study of Scottish heraldry is its pioneering work on material from the period prior to Gelre. Building on this foundation, the author surveys the evidence from a wide range of sources dating from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth, when the early volumes of the official Lyon Register appeared." "Two hundred computer-generated chart pedigrees are accompanied by full-colour coats of arms, among them those of the Stewarts, Douglases, Murrays, Hamiltons, Gordons and MacDonalds."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Excavations at the Ancient Synagogue of Gush Ḥalav by : Eric M. Meyers
Download or read book Excavations at the Ancient Synagogue of Gush Ḥalav written by Eric M. Meyers and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1990 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 1977 and 1978 the Meiron Excavation Project moved north from its excavations at Khirbet Shema and Meiron, excavating at the site of the synagogue at Gush Halav. With only very limited areas available for excavation, the team nevertheless was able to extract significant information for the history of Galilean synagogues. The synagogue here had a unique form, with spatial elements that have few if any parallels elsewhere. This publication will thus be of great importance for the history of Galilee in the first millennium C.E. and for the development of synagogue architecture and its relationship to the culture of the region in general.
