This book was released on 2002-08-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In algebraic topology some classical invariants - such as Betti numbers and Reidemeister torsion - are defined for compact spaces and finite group actions. They can be generalized using von Neumann algebras and their traces, and applied also to non-compact spaces and infinite groups. These new L2-invariants contain very interesting and novel information and can be applied to problems arising in topology, K-Theory, differential geometry, non-commutative geometry and spectral theory. The book, written in an accessible manner, presents a comprehensive introduction to this area of research, as well as its most recent results and developments.

Book Synopsis Quadratic and Hermitian Forms over Rings by : Max-Albert Knus
Download or read book Quadratic and Hermitian Forms over Rings written by Max-Albert Knus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its birth (in Babylon?) till 1936 the theory of quadratic forms dealt almost exclusively with forms over the real field, the complex field or the ring of integers. Only as late as 1937 were the foundations of a theory over an arbitrary field laid. This was in a famous paper by Ernst Witt. Still too early, apparently, because it took another 25 years for the ideas of Witt to be pursued, notably by Albrecht Pfister, and expanded into a full branch of algebra. Around 1960 the development of algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory led to the study of quadratic forms over commutative rings and hermitian forms over rings with involutions. Not surprisingly, in this more general setting, algebraic K-theory plays the role that linear algebra plays in the case of fields. This book exposes the theory of quadratic and hermitian forms over rings in a very general setting. It avoids, as far as possible, any restriction on the characteristic and takes full advantage of the functorial aspects of the theory. The advantage of doing so is not only aesthetical: on the one hand, some classical proofs gain in simplicity and transparency, the most notable examples being the results on low-dimensional spinor groups; on the other hand new results are obtained, which went unnoticed even for fields, as in the case of involutions on 16-dimensional central simple algebras. The first chapter gives an introduction to the basic definitions and properties of hermitian forms which are used throughout the book.

Book Synopsis Leavitt Path Algebras and Classical K-Theory by : A. A. Ambily
Download or read book Leavitt Path Algebras and Classical K-Theory written by A. A. Ambily and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a comprehensive introduction to Leavitt path algebras (LPAs) and graph C*-algebras. Highlighting their significant connection with classical K-theory—which plays an important role in mathematics and its related emerging fields—this book allows readers from diverse mathematical backgrounds to understand and appreciate these structures. The articles on LPAs are mostly of an expository nature and the ones dealing with K-theory provide new proofs and are accessible to interested students and beginners of the field. It is a useful resource for graduate students and researchers working in this field and related areas, such as C*-algebras and symbolic dynamics.
Book Synopsis The Novikov Conjecture by : Matthias Kreck
Download or read book The Novikov Conjecture written by Matthias Kreck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lecture notes contain a guided tour to the Novikov Conjecture and related conjectures due to Baum-Connes, Borel and Farrell-Jones. They begin with basics about higher signatures, Whitehead torsion and the s-Cobordism Theorem. Then an introduction to surgery theory and a version of the assembly map is presented. Using the solution of the Novikov conjecture for special groups some applications to the classification of low dimensional manifolds are given.

Download or read book K-theory written by Michael Atiyah and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are based on the course of lectures I gave at Harvard in the fall of 1964. They constitute a self-contained account of vector bundles and K-theory assuming only the rudiments of point-set topology and linear algebra. One of the features of the treatment is that no use is made of ordinary homology or cohomology theory. In fact, rational cohomology is defined in terms of K-theory.The theory is taken as far as the solution of the Hopf invariant problem and a start is mode on the J-homomorphism. In addition to the lecture notes proper, two papers of mine published since 1964 have been reproduced at the end. The first, dealing with operations, is a natural supplement to the material in Chapter III. It provides an alternative approach to operations which is less slick but more fundamental than the Grothendieck method of Chapter III, and it relates operations and filtration. Actually, the lectures deal with compact spaces, not cell-complexes, and so the skeleton-filtration does not figure in the notes. The second paper provides a new approach to K-theory and so fills an obvious gap in the lecture notes.
