Book excerpt: The study of pre-modern anthropology requires the close examination of the relationship between nature and human society, which has been both precarious and threatening as well as productive, soothing, inviting, and pleasurable. Much depends on the specific circumstances, as the works by philosophers, theologians, poets, artists, and medical practitioners have regularly demonstrated. It would not be good enough, as previous scholarship has commonly done, to examine simply what the various writers or artists had to say about nature. While modern scientists consider just the hard-core data of the objective world, cultural historians and literary scholars endeavor to comprehend the deeper meaning of the concept of nature presented by countless writers and artists. Only when we have a good grasp of the interactions between people and their natural environment, are we in a position to identify and interpret mental structures, social and economic relationships, medical and scientific concepts of human health, and the messages about all existence as depicted in major art works. In light of the current conditions threatening to bring upon us a global crisis, it matters centrally to take into consideration pre-modern discourses on nature and its enormous powers to understand the topoi and tropes determining the concepts through which we perceive nature. Nature thus proves to be a force far beyond all human comprehensibility, being both material and spiritual depending on our critical approaches.

Book excerpt: "Everything that could blossom upon Earth has blossomed, each in its due season and its proper sphere; it has withered away and will blossom again when its time arrives." So says Herder of civilizations, using one of his favorite metaphors. His pre-Darwin Hegelian teleology sounds quaint at times, but at the same time allows him to hold some amazingly modern sentiments. For example, he repudiates slavery and the mistreatment of different races, and makes an appeal to understand them without filtering them through our own conceptual schemes; he realizes the genetic source of all changes and speaks of our assuredly future abilities to genetically manipulate organisms. And yet, he can be shockingly dated: he constantly refers to Western Europeans as those having the "perfect form" as opposed to those in say, Africa, whose form is genetically "degenerate." He, at times, writes as if he is on the verge of propounding a theory of evolution while still referring constantly to the "Creator," being ambiguous as to whether this is god or nature, while seeming at times to accept and at others to reject a form of Lamarckism, and finally to disavow an organism's ability to change its form or "falsify its figure" (say, from dog to wolf), though admitting that in the past the species may not have been as separate as they are now. If we can forgive him his European-centric viewpoint we are left with a fascinating Enlightenment viewpoint of historical progress, together with some cogent rules and pithy axioms that attempt to understand the mysterious movements of history. This is a well-formatted version of T. Churchill's translation of Herder's Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschicte der Menschheit, first published in London in 1800.

Book excerpt: Focusing on eighteenth-century cultural productions, Wendy Sutherland examines how representations of race in philosophy, anthropology, aesthetics, drama, and court painting influenced the construction of a white bourgeois German self. Sutherland positions her work within the framework of the transatlantic slave trade, showing that slavery, colonialism, and the triangular trade between Europe, West Africa, and the Caribbean function as the global stage on which German bourgeois dramas by Friedrich Wilhelm Ziegler, Ernst Lorenz Rathlef, and Theodor Körner (and a novella by Heinrich von Kleist on which Körner's play was based) were performed against a backdrop of philosophical and anthropological influences. Plays had an important role in educating the rising bourgeois class in morality, Sutherland argues, with fathers and daughters offered as exemplary moral figures in contrast to the depraved aristocracy. At the same time, black female protagonists in nontraditional dramas represent the boundaries of physical beauty and marriage eligibility while also complicating ideas of moral beauty embodied in the concept of the beautiful soul. Her book offers convincing evidence that the eighteenth-century German stage grappled with the representation of blackness during the Age of Goethe, even though the German states were neither colonial powers nor direct participants in the slave trade.

Herder "interpretiert die Menschheitsgeschichte als die vernunftgeleitete Fortsetzung der Naturgeschichte: So, wie die Organisationsweise eines Lebewesens zugleich durch seine organische Kraft und seine Umwelt bestimmt ist, muss die kulturelle Entwicklung eines Volkes, wenn sie gelingen soll, zugleich bestimmt sein durch den »Charakter« oder »Genius eines Volks« und durch die physischen Bedingungen (»Clima«) des »Landes« oder »Erdstrichs«, in dem es lebt. Diese beiden Determinanten beeinflussen sich wechselseitig: das jeweilige »Clima« prägt die Sinnlichkeit und Denkart des Volkes, das Volk prägt sein Land, indem es dieses zweckmäßig gestaltet, d. h. kultiviert. Im Laufe ihrer Geschichte bildet so jede Kultur eine organische, Mensch und Natur umgreifende Einheit, die einzigartig ist, weil jedes Volk besondere Anlagen hat und jedes Land spezifische Anpassungen erfordert bzw.
