Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why I Wrote Herbie the Hamster Searches for Friends When my children were young, we had several pets around the house. My oldest daughter, Leah, brought a hamster home from school, and the girls named him Herbie. Although Herbie lived in a hamster habitat, he managed to get out of the cage from time to time when someone forgot to close his cage door. As a father of four kids, I was always trying to teach them things I had learned during my life. I had witnessed how some people always believed they weren't good enough, or smart enough, or pretty enough, etc., so part of the story I tell in Herbie the Hamster is that a person's happiness comes from feeling good about himself or herself. I have also seen kids being mean to someone, or making wrong choices in life, and going down the wrong road. The other part of the story is to say that you need to pick your friends carefully, or you might head down the wrong path, too!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And in fairness, she said she wanted to run away from home. She had packed up this little miniature brick red suitcase with what she thought were her prized possessions, and she stood in front of the glass storm door for the longest time. I watched impatiently from around the corner. What is she waiting for? I wondered. Did she think some magical bus was going to pull up and take her off to some land where she was an only child? A place where such things as hand-me-downs and bunk beds didn't exist? It's been so long now, I can't remember if there was any prediscussion or if I just walked up and pushed her, suitcase and all, out the door. Problem is, the door didn't open. It shattered, and she fell out. You know how you sometimes see a look on someone's face that just makes you Cringe. With. Fear? It was that look. I half expected her head to start spinning around, and for that briefest of moments, I was frozen in fear. I suppose that fact that she said she was going to run away and my delight in the prospect of having a room all to my own clouded my judgment, and well, the rest as they say, is history. Sibling rivalry is a struggle many of us have encountered. Trying to find your place in a family is hard. I was the maladjusted middle child in a family of seven children. Struggling to be noticed or once in a while to just win at something. This is "my" story about growing up in a close family where laughter is all we needed to survive. Of course, their versions could be different, but they didn't write a book now, did they! #FINALLYWINNING

Download or read book Grandpa Rules written by Michael Milligan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-04-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen years ago, Mike Milligan learned he would become a grandfather for the first time. He was surprised to find that there was little or no information available on what it means to be a grandfather, how to make the most of the experience, and how to be the best grandfather possible. Sure, there were shelves of books dedicated to grandmothers—all with cuddly covers depicting spring bouquets or gentle little lambs. But there was not a single book that spoke to him, a sixty-four-year-old grandfather-to-be. It struck him that there were countless other grandfathers out there experiencing this same feeling of neglect. With over a decade of grandparenting under his belt, Milligan is thrilled to offer his Grandpa Rules. Over the years, Milligan has discovered some universal rules that apply to grandfathers everywhere. For example, the "let it slide" rule has taught him to take it in stride when he hears one of his grandchildren say, "Grandpa sure dresses funny." Imbued with Milligan's humor, honed during his career in comedy writing for television (The Jeffersons, All in the Family, etc.), Grandpa Rules will entertain and delight millions of grandfathers, as well as those who will soon earn the exalted title of "Grandpa." It's the perfect gift for a special grandfather, for Father's Day, a birthday, the birth of a grandchild, or just for a grandpa to read and enjoy during one of his many bathroom visits.

Book excerpt: Rejected by his doctrinaire socialist mother and father while still a baby, John Denby is sent down south to live with his wealthy grandfather and grandmother. Educated at a private school and cosseted at home, all he knows is the leafy London suburb where he lives and his self-created world of steam train models and the Scripture Union. Then a sudden tragedy strikes and he must return to the 'desolate' , 'proletarian' North to live with his deeply unsympathetic parents and to attend an 'experimental' state school that his father has helped set up. A strange fish out of water, he quickly discovers that, to survive, he must live a double life both sensitive 'posh git' and 'daredevil hard lad' . Part Dickensian Bildungsroman, part coruscating satire, Far, Far the Mountain Peak is an always engaging, and sometimes deeply moving, tale of an awkward boy struggling to find his place in the world.
