Book excerpt: The anthrax incidents following the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the spotlight on the nation's public health agencies, placing it under an unprecedented scrutiny that added new dimensions to the complex issues considered in this report. The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century reaffirms the vision of Healthy People 2010, and outlines a systems approach to assuring the nation's health in practice, research, and policy. This approach focuses on joining the unique resources and perspectives of diverse sectors and entities and challenges these groups to work in a concerted, strategic way to promote and protect the public's health. Focusing on diverse partnerships as the framework for public health, the book discusses: The need for a shift from an individual to a population-based approach in practice, research, policy, and community engagement. The status of the governmental public health infrastructure and what needs to be improved, including its interface with the health care delivery system. The roles nongovernment actors, such as academia, business, local communities and the media can play in creating a healthy nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing population of the country and the polluted environment are serious challenges to human life. Food grains and vegetables have been badly affected by the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Today’s science has launched a campaign of victory over deadly diseases, while a disease has taken birth in such a way that hardly anyone is untouched. The disease is “the lack of immunity in the body”. The previous epidemic of Corona was a challenge to mankind. Apart from this, there are some poor families in rural areas who have to struggle hard for food. When they fall sick, lack of money for medical treatment becomes the cause of their problems. Keeping all this in mind, the Herbo Ved Foundation has tried to present a programme through which the masses can get health benefits by providing first aid. It is common for the spices used at home to be accessible to every family. By consuming them medicinally, a healthy body can be maintained. The purpose of including spices in food, was an attempt to prevent diseases. For example, turmeric (haldi) in regular use prevents cancer, and large cardamom is used to digest bananas. “Health & Spices” is the first part of the book based on common spices. In the second part, there is a representation of ‘Health & Kitchen Garden’. In the third part, “Health and Tree” and in the last part, special and divine herbs, viz. Gurmar (Gymnema), Kalmegh (Andrographis), Babool (Acacia), and Soma (the divine herb of immortality), Sanjeevani (the divine resuscitating herbs), and Kalpvriksha (divine tree), have been depicted. There may be many more herbs for inclusion in this series, but the purpose is to make it compact and comprehensive. Disclaimer: A request to all the readers, consultation with an authorised doctor is absolutely essential before using this, and it is necessary to understand the seriousness of the diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NATIONAL BESTSELLER In this urgent, singularly authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical--and accessible--plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid an irreversible climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help and guidance of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science and finance, he has focused on exactly what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide toward certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only gathers together all the information we need to fully grasp how important it is that we work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases but also details exactly what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. He describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions; where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively; where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions--suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but by following the guidelines he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Book excerpt: Drawing on the work of the Roundtable on Evidence-Based Medicine, the 2007 IOM Annual Meeting assessed some of the rapidly occurring changes in health care related to new diagnostic and treatment tools, emerging genetic insights, the developments in information technology, and healthcare costs, and discussed the need for a stronger focus on evidence to ensure that the promise of scientific discovery and technological innovation is efficiently captured to provide the right care for the right patient at the right time. As new discoveries continue to expand the universe of medical interventions, treatments, and methods of care, the need for a more systematic approach to evidence development and application becomes increasingly critical. Without better information about the effectiveness of different treatment options, the resulting uncertainty can lead to the delivery of services that may be unnecessary, unproven, or even harmful. Improving the evidence-base for medicine holds great potential to increase the quality and efficiency of medical care. The Annual Meeting, held on October 8, 2007, brought together many of the nation's leading authorities on various aspects of the issues - both challenges and opportunities - to present their perspectives and engage in discussion with the IOM membership.

Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination identifies types of utilizations that might be good proxies for "listing-level" severity; that is, what represents an impairment, or combination of impairments, that are severe enough to prevent a person from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience.
