Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidative stress is the result of an imbalance in pro-oxidant/antioxidant homeostasis that leads to the generation of toxic reactive oxygen species. Brain cells are continuously exposed to reactive oxygen species generated by oxidative metabolism, and in certain pathological conditions defense mechanisms against oxygen radicals may be weakened and/or overwhelmed. DNA is a potential target for oxidative damage, and genomic damage can contribute to neuropathogenesis. It is important therefore to identify tools for the quantitative analysis of DNA damage in models on neurological disorders. This book presents detailed information on various neurodegenerative disorders and their connection with oxidative stress. This information will provide clinicians with directions to treat these disorders with appropriate therapy and is also of vital importance for the drug industries for the design of new drugs for treatment of degenerative disorders. * Contains the latest information on the subject of neurodegenerative disorders* Reflects on various factors involved in degeneration and gives suggestions for how to tackle these problems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to herbal and holistic medicine for brain health and neurologic disorders • Provides detailed herbal, antioxidant, and nutritional strategies for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, stroke, migraine, and seizures • Supported by scientific studies and years of successful clinical practice • Discusses potential side effects, counter-indications, and the proper dosages to reduce symptoms, slow disease progression, and lessen the chances of recurrence Numerous medical journals have published studies supporting the use of herbs and nutrients in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Yet in practice most neurologists rarely include them as part of their protocols. In this practical guide, Sidney Kurn, M.D., and Sheryl Shook, Ph.D., explain how to safely and easily incorporate herbs, antioxidants, and nutritional supplements into the standard conventional treatments for 6 common neurologic disorders: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, stroke, migraine, and seizures. For each condition, the authors provide detailed strategies supported by scientific evidence and years of successful clinical practice. They examine the biochemical role of each recommended herb, nutrient, or antioxidant and discuss potential side effects, counter-indications, and proper dosages to reduce symptoms, slow disease progression, and--in the case of stroke, migraine, and seizures--lessen the chances of recurrence. The authors explore the nutrient deficiencies and physiological mechanisms, including inflammation, heavy metal toxicity, and mitochondrial dysfunction, that can cause oxidative injuries and initiate neurologic disorders. They reveal which common substances, such as aspartame and glutamate, can trigger these mechanisms at the cellular level and recommend specific herbs and antioxidants, such as turmeric, cannabinoids, resveratrol, and N-acetyl cysteine, to counteract their effects. They discuss the importance of sleep to overall well-being, especially for those suffering from neurologic disorders, and offer tips to help ensure a good night’s sleep. Integrating neuroscience, biochemistry, herbalism, and decades of clinical experience, the authors lay the scientific foundation for a holistic, naturopathic approach to neurologic disorders and a way to enhance the quality of life for those suffering from these conditions.

Book excerpt: This book intends to strike a balance between developments in pharmacotherapy research and the facts that researchers must absorb, as well as link scientific advances with clinical practice so that the management of diseases can be based on sound physiological concepts. Each chapter has been reviewed and new authors have brought up-to-date research to make the book more informative, illustrative, and easy to read. The book focuses on three major areas: Experimental, preclinical, and clinical applications of herbal medicine; Evidence-based strategies in emergency medicine and New approach in management of psychiatric disorders. The first three chapters describe new and modern applications of common herbs for treatment of several inflammatory and skin disorders, e.g. ulcerative colitis, bronchial asthma, osteoarthritis, multiple sclerosis, and melasma. Chapter four deals with the most severe hypertensive states that pose an immediate threat to life, and how to manage these situations. The fifth chapter is dedicated to tackling polypharmacy psychiatric disorders. We hope this book is useful to a wide range of readers, from students first learning about pharmacotherapy, through advanced clinicians and researchers who are looking for a review of current treatments and conceptualizations of the condition. It is our hope that this book may motivate readers to approach the evidence on pharmacotherapy with an open mind, and thereby spark an interest in initiating further contributions to the current scientific debate and treatment development efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of stroke research continues to evolve, and better outcomes are possible and even likely. Over the last two decades, basic science research in the field of stroke has elucidated multiple pathways of cellular injury and repair after cerebral ischemia, resulting in the identification of several promising targets for neuroprotection. Prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases has been one of the primary goals of neuroscience research but unfortunately, to date, no such safe preventive agents are available. There is an urgent need for agents that are pharmacologically safe, cost-effective, and immediately available with minimal side effects. Although a considerable amount of research has been invested into the development of novel treatments capable of protecting the brain from damage following stroke, but with limited success. Currently, the only drug approved for the treatment of ischemic stroke is recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA, alteplase), which has a limited time window for administration and increases the risk for subsequent hemorrhage. This book assesses the immunobiology of stroke, natural herbs and human brain interaction, current evidence for the efficacy of a range of readily available plant-based extracts and chemicals that may improve brain function. They are discussed in terms of how an increased understanding of the relationship between their ecological roles and CNS effects might further the field of natural, phytochemical drug discovery. Numerous neuroprotective treatments have been identified that show great promise in animal models of stroke. In this book, we have also highlighted the promising targets of neuroprotection and the natural products from traditional medicinal herbs that exhibit protective effects on ischemic brain injury. Further the authors discuss the individual herbs, herbal cocktails and the components from herbs in neuroprotection. The book contains many diagrams and tables with highlighting the role of various herbs and their components in neuroprotection. A separate chapter has been included regarding polyphenols in neuroprotection.

Natural products refer to as any natural constituents, natural substances, or a group of the secondary metabolites that derive from plants, insects, marine plants and animals through their own metabolic pathways. Natural products are usually of high value and small quantity, and they have a variety of biological activities. Extensive research has been performed to understand the effects of natural products on the immune and inflammatory systems. However, the results have been published individually focusing on a particular aspect of immunity or inflammation. The readers in this field may benefit from a comprehensive review book that describes different aspects of immune/inflammatory responses together. This book provides an overview of how a variety of naturally occurring compounds may influence the body's immune and inflammatory systems with an emphasis on the actions of medicinal herbs. In this book, experts in each field present their recent data on the mechanisms by which natural products influence the immune and inflammatory responses. The experimental results that are described in this book are based on various in vitro as well as in vivo model systems. It is also discussed how such effects of natural products are related with their therapeutic applications for the treatment of immune and inflammatory diseases.
