I knew that I would suffer from that, and I hired her, ignoring my gut feeling. I couldn't be with her. I couldn't be with anyone. At least not at the time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most promising of the younger graphic novelists." —Charles McGrath, The New York Times Magazine Considered by many to be the most influential female cartoonist ever, Julie Doucet created an iconic body of work in the ten short years she solely devoted herself to her trailblazing comic-book series Dirty Plotte. Her comics are densely inked and detailed with a pulsating neurosis from a decidedly female point of view that set the comic-book world on its head when the series debuted. Doucet returns to comics after a five-year hiatus with a reworked edition of her dream journal My Most Secret Desire, complete with never-before-published material. My Most Secret Desire is considered to be Doucet 's most innovative work, exploring the longings, pressures, and exploits of the feminine subconscious. Nightmarish tales of pregnancy, menstruation, sex changes, and boyfriends haunt Doucet's nocturnal psyche with a feverish and surreal pitch.

Download or read book Blue Bel Air written by Brett Laidlaw and published by Ardent Media. This book was released on 1993 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sensual, dazzling language that ranges from lyrical heights to low comedy, Blue Bel Air leaps from the halls of science to urban blight, from fine dining to rummage sales, from thoughts of mass murder at a family picnic to a bacchanal on the shores of Lake Superior, from metaphysics to the dark cave of unreason and the insoluble ties of blood. Omnia vincit amor: Love conquers all. Does it? Omnia amans amens, this much seems sure: All lovers are demented. Sylvia Stenmark is a brilliant, troubled young woman whose accomplishments cannot compensate for a splintered family past and present. She works in the catacombs of a university laboratory complex, friend and executioner to radioactive mice. Bryce Fraser is a reporter who doesn't believe in facts. His past is haunted by the suicide of his father ("a full professor, a poet of small renown") seven years earlier. Carla, a cook, is Bryce's friend and Sylvia's high school classmate. When Sylvia unexpectedly resurfaces in Carla's life, and at the same time enters Bryce's life in a very different way, the forces of coincidence and fascination draw them together into a shifting triangle which will try the powers of friendship, loyalty, and love. On his first, odd date with Sylvia, Bryce comes away with Sylvia's grandmother's car, a 1962 Bel Air, and his fate becomes enmeshed for a time in the car's vintage machinery and in his own embrace of coincidence and the intuitive life that he strives to lead. The Blue Bel Air is a vehicle in many senses, a vehicle that Bryce can't quite seem to steer. Blue Bel Air is a novel that illuminates character with precision, humor, and brilliance. It ponders motive while refusing easy psychology, temperingrationality with the mysterious workings of what Bryce calls "the secret desire". It encompasses a richly textured world of love and betrayal, reason and imagination, heartbreak and joy.

Download or read book Desire written by Per Bjørnar Grande and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desire can take many forms. Hegel related desire to acceptance, Nietzsche to power, and Freud to the erotic. In novels and plays by Gustave Flaubert, Marcel Proust, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Arthur Miller and music by Lana Del Rey, desire operates in a complex, slippery way that eludes philosophical and psychoanalytic attempts to pin it down. These and other great works of literature corroborate René Girard’s understanding of desire as taking shape “according to the other’s desire.” The mimetic approach frees desire from the preconceptions of both subject- and object-oriented psychologies and puts literary criticism in touch with the concrete substance of fictional narratives. Drawing on both modern masterpieces and iconic works of contemporary pop culture, Per Bjørnar Grande sketches a Girardian phenomenology of desire, one that sheds new light on the frustrating and repetitive nature of human relations in a world of vanishing taboos.

Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, Bengal witnessed an extraordinary intellectual flowering. Bengali prose emerged, and with it the novel and modern blank verse; old arguments about religion, society, and the lives of women were overturned; great schools and colleges were created; new ideas surfaced in science. And all these changes were led by a handful of remarkable men and women. For the first time comes a gripping narrative about the Bengal Renaissance recounted through the lives of all its players from Rammohun Roy to Rabindranath Tagore. Immaculately researched, told with colour, drama, and passion, Awakening is a stunning achievement.

Book Synopsis Euripidean Polemic by : N. T. Croally
Download or read book Euripidean Polemic written by N. T. Croally and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-10-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to interpret Euripides' The Trojan Women in the light of a view of tragedy which sees its function, as it was understood in classical Athens, as being didactic. This function, the author argues, was carried out by an examination of the ideology to which the audience subscribed. The Trojan Women, powerfully exploiting the dramatic context of the aftermath of the Trojan War, is a remarkable example of tragic teaching. The play questions a series of mutually reinforcing polarities (man/god; man/woman; Greek/barbarian; free/slave) through which an Athenian citizen defined himself, and also examines the dangers of rhetoric and the value of victory in war. By making the didactic function of tragedy the basis of interpretation, the author is able to offer a coherent view of a number of long-standing problems in Euripidean and tragic criticism, namely the relation of Euripides to the sophists, the pervasive self-reference and anachronism in Euripides, the problem of contemporary reference, and the construction and importance of the tragic scene. The book, which makes use of recent scholarship both in Classics and in critical theory, should be read by all those interested in Greek tragedy and in the culture of late fifth-century Athens.
