Book excerpt: In response to Knox's letter (see GLC02437.01649), John Pitts, of the Massachusetts Legislature, writes that he can see no objection in reason, to his inserting himself into this State by the most convenient opportunity, but I cant say what would be the public opinion. Declares, I have not attempted to ascertain it by laying your letter before the General Court, as, prior to my receiving it, the Court had determined to take up no more private matters during ye [the] present session, than what had been already received. Suggests sending a letter to the Governor to present him to public view. Has also had another idea: It is if you can consistently admit Mr. Winslow into your lines, & take him into the Service, his having been in arms would be a powerful argument for his return into this State, and the recognizing him as a Subject. Concludes that if Mr. Winslow's case comes before the General Court while he is a member, he will do his best to facilitate Mr. Winslow's return. Sends regards to Mrs. Knox.

Writes to Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts, to ask that eighteen-year-old Isaac Winslow be allowed to return to land his family owns in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Knox implies that Isaac's father, also named Isaac, is a loyalist. Relates that Isaac hopes no conduct of his father will prevent his residence in a country for which he has the greatest respect. Young Isaac was sent away to Canada at age 11 when the enemy arrived, and is now eighteen and has landed in New York. Knox emphasizes young Isaac's innocence and desire to be of service to his country.

Ends by stating, The disturbances in Massachusetts have pretty nearly subsided - the Courts of Justice are now trying such of the captured culprits as appear to be most criminal, referring to the end of Shays' Rebellion. Writes, All my little family have been much afflicted with sickness, and mentions that Mrs. Knox and Mary were ill with intermittent fevers but have recovered. Lucy was declining rapidly so they brought her to the North River for the pure air, and it has helped aid her recovery. Marcus has been suffering from a [dysentery?] a consequence of [getting] teeth. He fears that William will never have the pleasure to see him. A few days, perhaps a few hours may decide his fate.
