Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As consumers we are exposed on a daily basis to cosmetic claims, from brushing our teeth in the morning to using the latest anti-ageing creams. We can't get away from them. Consumers are continually enticed by claims of intrigue and efficacy. What are these cosmetic claims? How are they actually developed and justified? With most consumers obtaining their information about cosmetic products from the press, internet sources and social media, it is important to discern between fact and fiction. This book opens with three key questions: why do we even use cosmetics, what is their purpose, and how vain are we all? The answers are by no means exhaustive, but serve as a guide to what cosmetic claims are, how they are made and regulated. By examining the factors influencing the claims development process, the author aims to introduce consumers to the complexity and nuances of how the industry develops claims for its cosmetic products. They should also be more informed when choosing and purchasing cosmetic products, and be more circumspect when judging what they read in the press, and on the internet and social media............................................................................................................................................................................ Cosmetic industry professionals, be they marketing, R&D or regulatory affairs, should gain a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in developing effective cosmetic claims, and obtain more clarity in legislative compliance.........................The book closes with more questions than answers since it touches on the most sensitive aspects of who we are and what we want. It revisits the three questions, why we use cosmetics, and how we search for claims to solve a number of our social needs that are clearly not the remit of cosmetics, despite their impact. This book is presented in a way that will both provoke and appeal to all consumers irrespective of which side of the cosmetic counter they stand -- colleagues in the industry or friends and family on the high street ............................................................................................................................. The reflection in the mirror is never what it seems! ...........................................................................................................................Chapter 1: Why We Use Cosmetics - How Vain Are We? Chapter 2: The Skin Chapter 3: Types of Claims and Where We Find Them Chapter 4: Cosmetic Claims - What Are They? Chapter 5: Legislation & Law Chapter 6: How Claims Are Made and Substantiated Chapter 7: Understanding Claims Chapter 8: Claims in a Green World Gone Grey Chapter 9: Are We Worth It?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adjectives are the third most important class of words (after verbs and nouns), yet this is the first book-length study in English of this central grammatical category. In it English adjectives are described within a framework which unifies semantics and syntax; this has important implications for the modelling of lexis in general. It has long been a principle of systemic functional linguistics - the theory in which the description is set - that lexis should be treated, in Halliday's words, as 'most delicate grammar'. Until now, this challenging concept has never been explored and tested for more than a few small areas of lexis. The research reported here is the first large-scale test of this hypothesis. After a thorough survey of the relevant literature, Gordon Tucker provides a linguistic description of the meanings and forms of the adjectives themselves, the structures that occur around them, and the functions that such units perform as elements of other units (such as the clause and the nominal group). The Lexicogrammar of Adjectives constitutes a major descriptive addition to our knowledge of the value of'lexis as most delicate grammar'. It is a major contribution to the theoretical modelling of language in general and of words in particular. Its conclusions are important both for systemic functional linguistics and for linguistic theory in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adjectives are comparatively less well studied than the lexical categories of nouns and verbs. The present volume brings together studies in the syntax and semantics of adjectives. Four of the contributions investigate the syntax of adjectives in a variety of languages (English, French, Mandarin Chinese, Modern Hebrew, Russian, Spanish, and Serbocroatian). The theoretical issues explored include: the syntax of attributive and predicative adjectives, the syntax of nominalized adjectives and the identification of adjectives as a distinct lexical category in Mandarin Chinese. A further four contributions examine different aspects in the semantics of adjectives in English, French, and Spanish, dealing with superlatives, comparatives, and aspect in adjectives. This volume will be of interest to researchers and students in syntax, formal semantics, and language typology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is concerned with a hitherto underresearched grammaticalization process: the development from quality-attributing adjective to determiner in the English noun phrase. It takes a bottom-up approach, based on extensive synchronic and diachronic corpus studies of six English adjectives of comparison: other, different, same, identical, similar and comparable. Their functional diversity in current English is proposed to constitute a case of layering, representing the original descriptive use, which expresses how like/unlike each other entities are, and a range of grammaticalized referential uses, which contribute to the identification and/or quantification of the entities denoted by the NP. Diachronic and comparative data material is invoked to verify and further develop the grammaticalization hypothesis. The development of adjectives of comparison involves several key concepts identified in the literature. Crucially, it is described as a case of textual intersubjectification driven by the optimalization of recipient-design. The actual grammaticalization paths are diverse and are characterized by lexical as well as structural persistence, i.e. the same lexical meaning develops into different grammatical functions in different syntagmatic configurations. In order to define the NP as a locus of diachronic change, this study offers a new angle on the description of adjectives and the modelling of NP structure. It advocates the abandonment of the traditional class-based model in favour of a radically functional one, in which functions are defined in terms of prototypicality so as to allow for gradience between and within them. The described grammaticalization processes involve developments from prototypical lexical to grammatical reference-related use within the adjectival category, which can be the starting point of further gradual change to determiners. The traditional relation between classes and positions is envisaged as a correspondence between functional and syntactic zones. The change in form concomitant with grammaticalization in the NP is argued to consist of the reconfiguration of structural combinatorics and progressive leftward movement. The book is of interest to linguistic researchers and graduate students in linguistics who focus their attention on grammaticalization and subjectification, the functional description of adjectives, questions of deixis and theoretical issues relating to nominal reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a book which gives you a good basis in addictions. The author tried to make it so. You do need to spend too much time in research, through the isles of libraries, through browsing the internet and any other form of research. It is a manual as well as a self-help book. Once you have it you will use it for a long time.. The beginning of the book covers some forms of addictions, including poker machines, and can be used by anyone who is addicted. The book dismisses the addiction myth, that you should not be addicted. There are healthy addictions which you should try to master, and unhealthy addictions which you should try not to have. There is also a purpose in addictions and that is to have more, to be more and to do more. Mastering addiction is the first step in dealing with addictions, but there is more to it than that. The idea of the purpose of living, the reason you are here is discussed. And, if you are less than fifty years of age you should try to do more than mastering your addictions. I hope you will enjoy the book and that it will make a difference in your life and in the life of the people you surround yourself with.

Book excerpt: This book deals with one aspect of Greek and Proto-Indo-European nominal morphology, the formation, inflection and semantics of s-stem nouns and adjectives. It uncovers the mechanisms of their creation and shows their limitation. The established view that the nouns are an unproductive category is challenged; at the same time, the expanding and partly changing nature of the basis governing the creation of the adjectives is explained. Morphology and semantics are studied in tandem, and a large chronological span of the Greek language is covered. The historical side is then extended into prehistory, and in particular the Greek evidence is tested against recent theories on Proto-Indo-European ablaut, leading to a reassessment of the morphonological characteristics in question.
