Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the need for telephone operators arose in the 1870s, the assumption was that they should all be male. Wages for adult men were too high, so boys were hired. They proved quick to argue with the subscribers, so females replaced them. Women were calmer, had reassuring voices and rarely talked back. Within a few years, telephone operators were all female and would remain so. The pay was low and working conditions harsh. The job often impaired their health, as they suffered abuse from subscribers in silence under pain of dismissal. Discipline was stern--dress codes were mandated, although they were never seen by the public. Most were young, domestic and anything but militant. Yet many joined unions and walked picket lines in response to the severely capitalistic, sexist system they worked under.

Book excerpt: >At Huskerville High School, it's not a good idea to eat the cafeteria food, trust your government, or scoff at old Indian curses. Nothing less than the future of American public education is at stake as two teachers set out on a quest for the Holy Grail of education, the reason for declining test scores. Nothing you've ever read will quite prepare you for the roller coaster imagination of Larry Baldwin in his book, Corn-Fed. From treatises on the environment and the state of public education to the dirty business of political money-laundering and international finance, he tackles it all in a modern day Odyssey-like adventure stretching from France's Mississippi Valley Empire in 1700 to the gene-altering labs of the present. Buckle your safety belts!

Book excerpt: An entertaining record of a life and a time Ed Lowry joined the vaudeville circuit in 1910 at the age of fourteen. He never achieved stardom equal to the likes of Fred Allen, Jack Benny, George Burns, Buster Keaton, or Eddie Cantor, and he never considered himself an “artiste.” Instead, he saw himself as a hoofer and comic simply trying to make a living on the vaude scene. My Life in Vaudeville recounts Lowry’s long career in entertainment from the viewpoint of a foot soldier with a big dream. Lowry’s story begins in the heyday of vaudeville in the early twentieth century and follows its gradual decline. Unlike many of his associates, he recognized that movies and other forms of entertainment were the future, and thus branched out into other venues. He took gigs in radio in Philadelphia, Newark, New York, and Los Angeles; explored revues, cabarets, burlesque, and film; and organized USO road shows. With wit and perception, he reveals his stage roots as an entertainer playing to his audience, and editor Paul M. Levitt’s introduction beautifully sets the stage for Lowry’s gags-to-riches tale, providing much-needed historical perspective. My Life in Vaudeville is an unpretentious record of a time when thousands of young people went into show business to escape the boredom of daily life, and Lowry’s story is a view of vaudeville not often encountered. Lowry does much more than recall the daily life of a working actor, musician, and comedian. His story brings vaudeville to life and places it within the larger narratives of popular culture and popular entertainment of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Rediscover the world of the Retrievers and the Cosa Nostradamus, in book 4 of the popular series by Laura Anne Gilman. Wren Valere used to be almost invisible. But now she’s not only being seen, she’s getting involved. Recent attacks against nonhuman Fatae have escalated into hate crimes against magic users in general—humans included. With the Mage Council distracted by internal power struggles, Wren reluctantly steps up as spokesperson for the fragilely united Fatae and lonejack communities. And, because the cosmos deems her without enough complications, her partner-lover Sergei is drowning in his own problems. And she can’t help him—she’s the cause. With lives on the line—including her own—Wren is going to have to break the lonejack credo, ditch her long-cherished invisibility and take a stand. But burning bridges can be deadly… Originally published in 2007

Book excerpt: Comedian and star of The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and host of The Great American Baking Show Ellie Kemper delivers a hilarious, refreshing, and inspiring collection of essays “teeming with energy and full of laugh-out-loud moments” (Associated Press). “A pleasure. Ellie Kemper is the kind of stable, intelligent, funny, healthy woman that usually only exists in yogurt commercials. But she’s real and she’s all ours!” —Tina Fey “Ellie is a hilarious and talented writer, although we’ll never know how much of this book the squirrel wrote.”—Mindy Kaling Meet Ellie, the best-intentioned redhead next door. You’ll laugh right alongside her as she shares tales of her childhood in St. Louis, whether directing and also starring in her family holiday pageant, washing her dad’s car with a Brillo pad, failing to become friends with a plump squirrel in her backyard, eating her feelings while watching PG-13 movies, or becoming a “sports monster” who ends up warming the bench of her Division 1 field hockey team in college. You’ll learn how she found her comedic calling in the world of improv, became a wife, mother and New Yorker, and landed the role of a bridesmaid (while simultaneously being a bridesmaid) in Bridesmaids. You’ll get to know and love the comic, upbeat, perpetually polite actress playing Erin Hannon on The Office, and the exuberant, pink-pants-wearing star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. If you’ve ever been curious about what happens behind the scenes of your favorite shows, what it really takes to be a soul cycle “warrior,” how to recover if you accidentally fall on Doris Kearns Goodwin or tell Tina Fey on meeting her for the first time that she has “great hair—really strong and thick,” this is your chance to find out. But it’s also a laugh-out-loud primer on how to keep a positive outlook in a world gone mad and how not to give up on your dreams. Ellie “dives fully into each role—as actor, comedian, writer, and also wife and new mom—with an electric dedication, by which one learns to reframe the picture, and if not exactly become a glass-half-full sort of person, at least become able to appreciate them” (Vogue.com).

Book excerpt: When Judy first began corresponding with an elderly man in Belfast in 2001, she was a former teacher who was interested in learning more about Ireland. She and Harry exchanged almost daily emails and immediately became friends. Harry soon realized Judy needed to tell someone about her abusive marriage to find an inner peace. He encouraged her to write her story. Hi Harry is the true story of how alcohol turned a loving husband into the violent man Judy was married to for ten years. He was a Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde personality, keeping Judy forever on edge: Who would he be today? The abuse she suffered slowly escalated until finally she knew the next time Mr. Hyde appeared, he would kill her. Emotionally destroyed, with little self-worth or confidence left, Judy relied on her dedication to her four children to find the courage to escape and make a new life for her family. Hi Harry is her story—a true testament to the power of a mother’s love.
