Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers of the 'Groningen Workshops on Hellenistic Poetry 3. Genre in Hellenistic Poetry' held at Groningen from 28-31 August 1996. During the workshop a first draft of the papers, which were sent to the participants of the workshop in advance, was discussed and commented on by an international group of specialists in the field of Hellenistic poetry. The volume contains a wide range of articles and thus provides a survey of current developments in research on an important aspect of Hellenistic poetry. In the past the Hellenistic treatment of genre was often described as 'Kreuzung der Gattungen', but during the last decades the development of modern literary criticism and its influence on research in Hellenistic poetry has led scholars to more refined views and suggested new questions. The aim of this workshop was to summarize and reconsider the results of earlier scholarship and to embark on new or until now neglected aspects of genre in Hellenistic poetry.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers of the 'Seventh Groningen Workshop on Hellenistic Poetry: Beyond the Canon' (Groningen 2004). During the workshop a first draft of each of the papers was commented on by an international group of specialists in the field of Hellenistic poetry. A number of previous workshops was devoted largely to the major Hellenistic poets. This recent workshop explores what the poets 'beyond the canon' of Callimachus, Theocritus and Apollonius Rhodius had to offer and it discussed questions of canonicity in Hellenistic poetry on a more general level. The papers in the present volume deal with a large range of authors and genres: Herondas, Lycophron, Euphorion, Hermesianax, Cercidas, Crates of Thebes and Alexander Aetolus, and the didactic poetry of Aratus, Nicander and Ps.-Scymnus, the later bucolic poems of Moschus and Bion and the pattern poems of Simias. At the same time special attention is given to the hexameter in inscribed Hellenistic epigram, which is compared to that of poets in the environment of the Museum of Alexandria. This volume is part of a series. Every two years a 'Workshop on Hellenistic Poetry' takes place at the University of Groningen, the papers of which are published in 'Hellenistica Groningana'.

The briefest of all ancient Greek genres, it is also the most resilient: for almost a thousand years it attracted some of the finest Greek poetic talents as well as exerting a profound interest on Latin literature, and it continues to inspire and influence modern translations and imitations. After a long period of neglect, research on epigram has surged during recent decades, and this volume draws on the fruits of that renewed scholarly engagement. It is concerned not with the work of individual authors or anthologies, but with the evolution of particular subgenres over time, and provides a selection of in-depth treatments of key aspects of Greek literary epigram of the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine periods. Individual chapters offer insights into a variety of topics, from explorations of the dynamic interactions between poets and their predecessors and contemporaries, and of the relationship between epigram and its socio-political, cultural, and literary background from the third century BCE up until the sixth century CE, to its interaction with its origins, inscribed epigram more generally, other literary genres, the visual arts, and Latin poetry, as well as the process of editing and compilation which generated the collections which survived into the modern world. Through the medium of individual studies the volume as a whole seeks to offer a sense of this vibrant and dynamic poetic form and its world which will be of value to scholars and students of Greek epigram and classical literature more broadly.

Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to Hellenistic poetry in the context of the contemporary world of third century Alexandria and beyond. This topic fits in with the increasing interest in the role of literature in ancient society in recent research, which has already been applied successfully to various aspects of Hellenistic poetry. The subject also has an added interest because for a long time there has been a tendency to regard this kind of poetry as art for art's sake, a kind of autonomous poetry and display of virtuosity among scholar-poets, who indulged in being as sophisticated as possible without being in touch with the real world. This view has been rightly challenged in recent years and the articles in this volume reflect this new approach, as the authors investigate the ways in which Hellenistic poetry, played a part in its social and cultural context.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume show how the past 'is present' in a variety of forms and contexts in the work of the Hellenistic poets and how these poets cannot escape dealing with it in depth, often in a creative and intriguing manner, which may help to give further meaning to the present as well. Some papers discuss the subject of past and present from a general point of view, others deal with issues of literary tradition and intertextuality or discuss the connections between past and present as they are used and established on an ideological level. The papers show that the past, though almost 'omnipresent', is never used in a purely antiquarian way. The Hellenistic poets clearly manage to link it to the present in a meaningful way and are able to use it to establish their own position in the literary tradition as well as in issues of ideological importance.

Book excerpt: "It is a well-known and striking fact that Hellenistic Poetry is full of powerful and powerfully present women, ranging from Ptolemaic and other queens, to female (semi-)divinities and epic heroines. But the Hellenistic era is likewise remarkable for being relatively rich in female authors, specifically in the domain of epigrammatic poetry. This volume sets out to broach not only the question who the powerful women of Hellenistic poetry were, and what their power consisted of, but also, quite emphatically, in what ways they differ from or resemble previous literary representations of women in, for example, Homeric epic, archaic lyric and Athenian tragedy, and why."--Provided by vendor.

Book excerpt: The Milan Papyrus ( P. Mil. Volg. VIII. 309), containing a collection of epigrams apparently all by Posidippus of Pella, provides one of the most exciting new additions to the corpus of Greek literature in decades. It not only contains over 100 previously unknown epigrams by one of the most prominent poets of the third century BC, but as an artefact it constitutes our earliest example of a Greek poetry book. In addition to a poetic translation of the entire corpus of Posidippus' poetry, this volume contains essays about Posidippus by experts in the fields of papyrology, Hellenistic and Augustan literature, Ptolemaic history, and Graeco-Roman visual culture.

Book excerpt: Rolf Strootman brings together various aspects of court culture in the Macedonian empires of the post-Achaemenid Near East. During the Hellenistic Period (c. 330-30 BCE), Alexander the Great and his successors reshaped their Persian and Greco-Macedonian legacies to create a new kind of rulership that was neither 'western' nor 'eastern' and would profoundly influence the later development of court culture and monarchy in both the Roman West and Iranian East.Drawing on the socio-political models of Norbert Elias and Charles Tilly, After the Achaemenids shows how the Hellenistic dynastic courts were instrumental in the integration of local elites in the empires, and the (re)distribution of power, wealth, and status. It analyses the competition among courtiers for royal favour and the, not always successful, attempts of the Hellenistic rulers to use these struggles to their own advantage. It demonstrates the interrelationships of the three competing 'Hellenistic' empires of the Seleukids, Antigonids and Ptolemies, casts new light on the phenomenon of Hellenistic Kingship by approaching it from the angle of the court and covers topics such as palace architecture, royal women, court ceremonial, and coronation ritual.
