Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word Frequencies in Written and Spoken English is a landmark volume in the development of vocabulary frequency studies. Whereas previous books have in general given frequency information about the written language only, this book provides information on both speech and writing. It not only gives information about the language as a whole, but also about the differences between spoken and written English, and between different spoken and written varieties of the language. The frequencies are derived from a wide ranging and up-to-date corpus of English: the British National Corpus, which was compiled from over 4,000 written texts and spoken transcriptions representing the present day language in the UK. The book is based on a new version of the corpus (available from 2001) providing more accurate grammatical information, which is essential (for example) for distinguishing words like leaves (noun) and leaves (verb) with different meanings. The book begins with a general introduction, explaining why such information is important and highlighting interesting linguistic findings that emerge from the statistical analysis of the British National Corpus vocabulary. It also contains twenty four 'interest boxes' which highlight and comment on different aspects of frequency - for example, the most common colour words in English in order of frequency, and a comparison of male words (e.g. man) and female words (e.g. woman) in terms of their frequency.

Book excerpt: "In the years following Nasser's rise to power, the demographic landscape and the economy of Egypt underwent a profound change. While these shifts have mostly been discussed in the light of postcolonial studies and the nationalization policies in the wider region, Najat Abdullhaq instead focuses on the role that these minorities had in the economy of pre-Nasser Egypt. With rigorous analysis of the types of companies that were set up by Jewish and Greek communities residing in Egypt, Abdullhaq draws out the changes which were occurring in the political and social sphere of the time. Jewish and Greek Communities in Egypt offers close analysis of those which can be described as 'innovative entrepreneurs, ' delineating the networks that existed between these businessmen and women. In doing so, the book also looks to the broader relationships and connections that were cultivated between Egyptian Greeks, Egyptian Jews and wider society. Additionally, Abdullhaq analyses how alterations in the political structures and law in the wake of World War II--including the rise of the Free Officers movements and the subsequent progressive nationalization of the Egyptian economy, and with it the curtailment of the private sector--affected the country's minorities"--

Book excerpt: This book presents 15 original papers and commentaries by a distinguished group of tax policy and tax administration experts. Using international examples, they highlight the state of knowledge of tax reform, present new thinking about the issue, and analyze useful policy options. The book’s general goal is to examine the current and emerging challenges facing tax reformers and to assess possible directions future reforms are likely to take. More specific themes include distributional issues, how to tax capital income, how to design specific taxes (e.g., the income tax, the value-added tax, the property tax), how to consider the politics and administrative aspects of tax reform, and how to combine the separate insights into comprehensive tax reform.

Book excerpt: The IMF Fiscal Affairs Department’s Revenue Administration Gap Analysis Program (RA-GAP) assists revenue administrations from IMF member countries in monitoring taxpayer compliance through tax gap analysis. The RA-GAP methodology for estimating the VAT gap presented in this Technical Note has some distinct advantages over commonly used methodologies. By using a value-added approach to estimating potential VAT revenues, as compared to the more traditional final consumption approach used by most countries undertaking VAT gap estimation, the RA-GAP methodology can provide VAT compliance gap estimates on a sector-by-sector basis, which assists revenue administrations to better target compliance efforts to close the gap. In addition, the RA-GAP methodology uses a unique measurement for actual VAT revenues, which isolates changes in revenue performance that might be due to cash management (e.g., delays in refunds) from those due to actual changes in taxpayer compliance.

These comics, most of which have never been reprinted before, are now here for the whole popeyed world to see.

Book excerpt: Founded by Bik van der Pol, the Dutch collaborative art duo of Liesbeth Bik (b. 1959) and Jos van der Pol (b. 1961), the School of Missing Studies started in 2003 as a collective made-up of artists and architects who recognized the missing as a matter of urgency in public space and how cultural education was so close yet so far removed from cultural production. They investigated what cultures laid the foundations for the loss that we are experiencing from modernization, and how we can learn from this loss. Their project was recreated for programming at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. It also became the subject of the Sandberg Institutes first publication in this new cultural series. The School of Missing Studies is calling for a space to turn existing knowledge against itself to affect our capacity to see things otherwise, to trust that seeing, and to set our own pedagogical terms. essays by Liz Allan, Bik van der Pol, Charles esche, e. C. feiss, Laymert Garcia dos Santos, Sarah Pierce, eloise Sweetman, Paulo Tavares, and nato Thompson.
