Book excerpt: Although closely focused on the remarkable Hebrew First-Crusade narratives, Robert Chazan's new interpretation of these texts is anything but narrow, as his title, God, Humanity, and History, strongly suggests. The three surviving Hebrew accounts of the crusaders' devastating assaults on Rhineland Jewish communities during the spring of 1096 have been examined at length, but only now can we appreciate the extent to which they represent their turbulent times. After a close analysis of the texts themselves, Chazan addresses the objectives of the three narratives. He compares these accounts with earlier Jewish history writing and with contemporary crusade historiography. It is in their disjuncture with past forms of Jewish historical narration and their amazing parallels with Latin crusade narratives that the Hebrew narratives are most revealing. We see how they reflect the embeddedness of early Ashkenazic Jewry in the vibrant atmosphere of late-eleventh- and early-twelfth-century northern Europe.

Book excerpt: This volume aims to revitalize the exchange between sociological differentiation theory and the sociology of religion, which previously held center stage among the sociological classics. It brings together contributions from different disciplines, as well as various forms of regional and historical expertise, which are indispensable in forming a globally oriented sociological perspective today. Secularization is understood as a process of boundary demarcation, that is, as the enactment of semantic, practical, and institutional distinctions between religion and other spheres of activity and knowledge. These distinctions may emerge from within the religious field itself, or may be absorbed into the field having originally emerged elsewhere. They may even be directly imposed upon religion by external forces. The volume is therefore based on the premise that societal differentiation – and secularity as a specific expression of it – is a widespread structural feature that nonetheless takes on various forms, depending on its historical and cultural context. In order to make this diversity visible, the volume adopts a global comparative perspective, and examines historical distinctions and differentiations in the West and beyond. By examining different forms and modes of secularity in statu nascendi, the volume contributes to developing a better understanding of the diversity of secularities, even of those found in the present day, in terms of their historicity and their specific path dependencies. With this shift in perspective, this special volume initiates a global and historical turn in the theory of differentiation, as well as in the study of secularity.

Hierfür wird zunächst erläutert, wie es überhaupt zu dem Phänomen der Kreuzzüge und Volkskreuzzüge kam und was genau solche ausmachte. Gründe für die Bevölkerung an diesen teilzunehmen, sollen ebenso angeführt werden wie solche, es nicht zu wagen. Die Verfolgungen und Tötungen von Juden, über die diese Arbeit in erster Linie berichten soll, werden hauptsächlich auf das Rheinland bezogen dargestellt. Zudem soll die Frage beantwortet werden, wie die Bischöfe in den dortigen großen Städten mit solcherlei Verfolgungen umgingen – akzeptierten sie diese und unterstützten sie sogar, oder versuchten sie, Ermordungen aller ihrer Bürger zu verhindern? Wie der König mit dieser Frage umging, soll ebenfalls geklärt werden. Um hierauf näher einzugehen, werden Vergleiche aus dem Verhalten mehrerer Bischöfe gezogen. So sollen die Geschehnisse, die im Jahr 1096 in Köln, Worms, Mainz, Trier und Speyer stattfanden, genauer analysiert werden. Hierfür werden sowohl christliche als auch hebräische Quellen herangezogen, um eine möglichst objektive, kulturspezifisch unverfälschte Sichtweise zu bieten. Welche Quellen jeweils für die Bearbeitung des Themas gewählt wurden, wird in einem zusätzlichen Kapitel nach der Schilderung der Entstehung des Kreuzzugsgedankens beschrieben, da dies ausschlaggebend für die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit ist. Auch Quellen aus dem syrischen und armenischen Raum werden in die Bearbeitung mit einbezogen werden, ebenso wie arabische Darstellungen über die Taten der Kreuzfahrer im Kontext der Eroberung Jerusalems im Jahr 1099. Nach der Betrachtung der Vorkommnisse im Zusammenhang mit dem ersten Kreuzzug erfolgt demnach ein knapper Ausblick auf die nachfolgende Zeit, um den weiteren Verlauf der zuvor beschriebenen Verfolgungen zu skizzieren.
