Book excerpt: Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son Omari opportunities they’ll never have. When a controversial incident at his upstate private school threatens to get him expelled, Nya must confront his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away? With profound compassion and lyricism, Pipeline brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore. Morisseau pens a deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future — without turning her back on the community that made him who he is.

Book excerpt: Petroleum pipelines ensure the sustained availability of petroleum products all across the country. Pipelines transport petroleum products in a safe and efficient manner from refineries to demand areas. They also transport crude oil from import terminals as well as domestic sources to the inland refineries. India, being a developing nation, has a large network of petroleum pipelines. Economic growth and expansion of infrastructure in this country offer opportunities to better utilize the existing pipeline network. The construction of new pipelines extends this network further. This book introduces readers to the field of petroleum pipelines, describes the salient features of a pipeline and discusses how this system is superior to other modes of petroleum transportation. It provides a brief account on different types of fluids transported through pipelines and highlights their properties that affect pipeline design. The book details the actual design of a pipeline - from route selection, hydraulic, mechanical and other aspects of design and engineering. It also describes the operation and maintenance procedures required in the pipeline system to run at a level of efficiency equivalent to its design efficiency. Key features Covers design and engineering of pipelines Discusses deployment of personnel and construction equipment Deals with pre-commissioning and commissioning of pipelines Examines corrosion of steel pipelines running underground Describes in detail the operation and maintenance procedures

Book excerpt: Oil and natural gas are now acknowledged to be the driving forces of international politics. What has not yet been fully explored is how their delivery affects global geopolitics. Pipelines, once built, create new diplomatic realities - some states are newly connected, others isolated. Some states benefit economically; others lose out. Often new energy supply routes fall across political fault-lines, as in the case of India and Pakistan. In the case of the former Soviet Union, the existing pipeline network reflects an old political reality, and causes tension between the newly independent states and their former Russian master. With energy demand soaring in industrialising Asia, and the resurgence of great power rivalry, the politics and practicalities of pipelines become central to a proper understanding of world affairs. In this groundbreaking and fully updated book, Rafael Kandiyoti takes us along the pipeline networks, from Kandahar to the Caspian basin, from Ceyhan to China, and shows us how they form the foundation of the new geopolitical order. In the process he demonstrates that the issue of energy supply revolves around not only hydrocarbon resources but also their delivery. This is an entirely new way to view the international politics of oil and natural gas, and is therefore crucial to any explanation of the tensions involving Central Asia, the Middle East, Russia, China and Europe.

Book excerpt: Diluted bitumen has been transported by pipeline in the United States for more than 40 years, with the amount increasing recently as a result of improved extraction technologies and resulting increases in production and exportation of Canadian diluted bitumen. The increased importation of Canadian diluted bitumen to the United States has strained the existing pipeline capacity and contributed to the expansion of pipeline mileage over the past 5 years. Although rising North American crude oil production has resulted in greater transport of crude oil by rail or tanker, oil pipelines continue to deliver the vast majority of crude oil supplies to U.S. refineries. Spills of Diluted Bitumen from Pipelines examines the current state of knowledge and identifies the relevant properties and characteristics of the transport, fate, and effects of diluted bitumen and commonly transported crude oils when spilled in the environment. This report assesses whether the differences between properties of diluted bitumen and those of other commonly transported crude oils warrant modifications to the regulations governing spill response plans and cleanup. Given the nature of pipeline operations, response planning, and the oil industry, the recommendations outlined in this study are broadly applicable to other modes of transportation as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diverse factors affecting the viscosity of a viscous crude oil-in-water emulsion for pipeline transportation were studied. The factors that are taken into account is effect of oil content, type and concentration of the surfactant, and speed of mixing, Agent in water method is used in the preparation of oil in water emulsions. The oil content ratio used in this study is 50-50, 70-30, and 90-10 by volume. Different surfactants, namely Triton X-100, Span 80 and Tween 80 are used to determine the best surfactant to emulsify heavy oil. The speed of mixing used in this study is 1000rpm, 1500rpm and 2000rpm. This study is conducted in room temperature. Amine functional group demulsifier are used to study the destabilization of heavy oil in water emulsions. The demulsifier used in this study is hexylamine and dioctylamine. The viscosity of the oil in water emulsion was found to decrease as the oil content of the emulsion decreased, and the speed of mixing decreased. The stability of the crude oil-in-water emulsions increases as the oil content of the emulsions increases, the surfactant concentration increases, and the speed of mixing increases. Hexylamine remove more water over time in the destabilization process. Hence, hexylamine is a better demulsifier than dioctlamine. From this research it can be concluded that oil in water emulsion method can reduce the viscosity of heavy crude oil greatly.
