Book excerpt: “[A] history of air conditioning, chronicling the numerous gimmicks, failed attempts, con jobs, and eventual successes . . . a surprisingly interesting journey.” —San Francisco Book Review The air conditioner is often hailed as one of the modern world’s greatest inventions—yet nearly as often blamed for global disaster. It has changed everything from architecture to people’s food habits; saved countless lives, and caused countless deaths. First appearing in 1902, when Willis Carrier, an engineer barely out of college, developed the “Apparatus for Treating Air,” everyone assumed it would instantly change the world. But the story of air conditioning and its rise to ubiquity is far from simple. In Cool, Salvatore Basile tracks two fascinating stories: the struggle to perfect an effective cooling device, and the effort to convince people that they actually needed such a thing. With a cast of characters ranging from Leonardo da Vinci to Richard Nixon and Felix the Cat, Cool showcases the myriad reactions to air conditioning as it was developed and introduced to the world. Here is a unique perspective on a common convenience: how we came to rely on it today, and how it might change radically tomorrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial hygienists and ventilation engineers know the name well: W.C.L. Hemeon. Since 1955, those professionals have frequently looked to Hemeon's Plant & Process Ventilation for essential information on industrial ventilation. Hemeon's longtime influence and inspiration has now prompted D. Jeff Burton-a prolific author on industrial ventilation himself-to produce a Fourth Edition of "the classic industrial ventilation text." While retaining Hemeon's distinctive writing style, conveying practical information in vivid phrasing, Burton has added extensive new information to recognize today's technology and techniques. Essential fundamentals of ventilation covered in the book include an explanation about the dynamic properties of airborne contaminants, and the principles of dispersion mechanism and local exhaust. Advanced applications are also examined in detail, particularly system design, dust control, and troubleshooting. Along with providing essential background on the two primary types of workplace ventilation-general and local exhaust-Hemeon's Plant & Process Ventilation also aims for mutual understanding between the health-oriented priorities of industrial hygienists, and the practical applications for maximum efficiency considered by ventilation engineers. Have a well-thumbed, dog-eared copy of Hemeon's Plant & Process Ventilation? Now is the best time to retire it in favor of this revised-and respectful-edition. Those who are new to Hemeon's approach will discover what other professionals have known more than 40 years: Hemeon offers some of the most effective ways to control environmental contaminates through proper ventilation techniques.

Based on the most recent standards from ASHRAE, this Sixth Edition provides complete and up-to-date coverage of all aspects of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. You’ll find the latest load calculation procedures, indoor air quality procedures, and issues related to ozone depletion. Throughout the text, numerous worked examples clearly show you how to apply the concepts in realistic scenarios. In addition, several computer programs (several new to this edition) help you understand key concepts and allow you to simulate various scenarios, such as psychometrics and air quality, load calculations, piping system design, duct system design, and cooling coil simulation. Additionally, the load calculation program has been revised and updated. These computer programs are available at the book’s website: www.wiley.com/college/mcquiston Key Features of the Sixth Edition Additional new worked examples in the text and on the accompanying software. Chapters 6-9 have been extensively revised for clarity and ease of use. Chapter 8, The Cooling Load, now includes two approaches: the heat balance method, as recommended by ASHRAE, and the simpler RTS method. Both approaches include computer applications to aid in calculations. Provides complete, authoritative treatment of all aspects of HVAC, based on current ASHRAE standards. Numerous worked examples and homework problems provide realistic scenarios to apply concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Heating and Ventilation The chapters comprising this book are a brief resume of the lectures delivered by the author to the classes in heating and ventilation at the University of Michigan. The subject matter was first published as a series of articles in Domestic Engineering. The book has been written primarily for the steamfitter and designer of heating systems. It presupposes a knowledge of the construction and operation of the simpler forms of heating systems and has been reduced to as brief a form as possible so that the reader can readily find the notes or data desired. The design of heating and ventilating systems has not been reduced to an exact science. The factor of judgment and experience in designing heating plants is a large one. One reason for this is the lack of exact experimental data governing some of the most important factors entering into these calculations. This lack must be filled from the designer's experience. The tables of heat losses from radiating surfaces and the tests of pipe coverings have been compiled from the results obtained from the experiments made under the direction of Prof. M. E. Cooley, Dean of the Department of Engineering, University of Michigan. The author also has shown illustrations of tunnel sections which have been used by Prof. Cooley in the design of a number of central heating systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fans, Ventilation and Heating There are two types of fans in common use, known as the centrifugal fan or blower, and the disk fan or propeller. The former consists of a number of straight or slightly curved blades extending radially from an axis as shown in Fig. 1. When the fan is in motion, the air in contact with the blades is thrown outward by the action of centrifugal force and delivered at the outer circumference or periphery of the wheel. A partial vacuum is thus produced at the center of the wheel, and air from the outside flows in to take the place of that which has been discharged. Fig. 3 illustrates the action of a centrifugal fan, the arrows showing the path of the air. This type of fan is usually enclosed in a steel plate casing of such form as to provide for the free movement of the air as it escapes from the periphery of the wheel. An opening in the circumference of the casing serves as an outlet into the distributing ducts which carry the air to the various rooms to be ventilated, or to the furnaces in the case of mechanical draft. A fan with casing is shown in Fig. 2. The discharge opening can be placed in any position desired, either up, down, top horizontal, bottom horizontal, or at any angle.
