Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations are presented for the calculation of heat transfer at the forward stagnation point of both two-dimensional and axially symmetric blunt bodies. The relations for the heat transfer, which were obtained from exact solutions to the equations of the laminar boundary layer, are presented in terms of the local velocity gradient at the stagnation point. These exact solutions include the effects of variation of fluid properties, Prandtl number, and transpiration cooling. Examples illustrating the calculation procedure are also included.

Book excerpt: The equations of Lees were integrated for an axially-symmetric body with a hemispherical nose, and for a flat body with a cylindrical nose. The results indicated that the heat transfer distributions, when non-dimensionalized with respect to the stagnation point, for a given pressure distribution, differ by the order of 3%. The calculations were also made for a flat nosed axially-symmetric body and a flat nosed plate; the heat distributions agreed very well with each other. Since the heat transfer about a 3-dimensional body lies between that of an equivalent 2-dimensional and a similar axiallysymmetric body, it is concluded that this distribution may be obtained from the 2-dimensional analysis. Book Synopsis An Experimental Study of the Pressure and Heat-transfer Distribution on a 70° Sweep Slab Delta Wing in Hypersonic Flow by : Mitchel H. Bertram
Download or read book An Experimental Study of the Pressure and Heat-transfer Distribution on a 70° Sweep Slab Delta Wing in Hypersonic Flow written by Mitchel H. Bertram and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented for a study of the pressure and heat-transfer distributions and force characteristics of slab delta wings of 70° sweep at Mach numbers of 6.8 and 9.6 in air and 18 in helium. The wings had cylindrical leading edges and were tested with two different noses. One was sharp in plan view and the other was a tangent sphere with the same diameter as the cylindrical leading edge. Simple approaches to predicting the heat transfer are shown to be successful if the flow pattern peculiar to the angle-of-attack range under consideration is taken into account.

Download or read book Aerodynamic Heat Transfer to a Melting Body written by G. F. Carrier and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a blunt axially symmetric object is exposed to a sufficiently high speed air stream, the air behind the shock has a very high enthalpy and the object will melt. In order to compute the rate of melting, or any other macroscopic features of the composite flow, both the gas boundary layer flow and the melting body flow must be analyzed. This analysis can most conveniently be carried by (1) assuming an interface temperature, Ti, (2) predicting the gas boundary layer associated with that Ti, (3) predicting the liquid layer flow using as boundary conditions the results of step (2), and (4) selecting the correct Ti as that value which leads to a consistent energy balance. This note contains an analysis of the liquid layer flow for a given, quite general, family of material properties. The interface temperature, Ti, the skin friction at the interface, the evaporation rate at the interface, and the pressure gradient, are taken as known quantities since the latter three items are controlled by the gas layer and are known once Ti is given.
