Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge is not merely everything we have come to know, but also ideas we have pondered long enough to know in which way they are related, and 1 how these ideas can be put to practical use. Modern aviation has been made possible as a result of much scienti c - search. However, the very rst useful results of this research became ava- able a considerable length of time after the aviation pioneers had made their rst ights. Apparently, researchers were not able to nd an adequate exp- nation for the occurrence of lift until the beginning of the 21st century. Also, for the fundamentals of stability and control, there was no theory available that the pioneers could rely on. Only after the rst motorized ights had been successfully made did researchers become more interested in the science of aviation, which from then on began to take shape. In modern day life, many millions of passengers are transported every year by air. People in the western societies take to the skies, on average, several times a year. Especially in areas surrounding busy airports, travel by plane has been on the rise since the end of the Second World War. Despite becoming familiar with the sight of a jumbo jet commencing its ight once or twice a day, many nd it astonishing that such a colossus with a mass of several hundred thousands of kilograms can actually lift off from the ground.

Book excerpt: NASA SP 2010-4319. NASA History Series. This scholarly look at the Altitude Wind Tunnel covers the transformations the wind tunnel made in its long history from a wind tunnel doing full-scale testing for wartime applications, to a vacuum chamber supporting the Vision for Space Exploration, and even a brief period as home to Mercury astronaut training. The book also addresses the attempts to resurrect the facility and its eventual decommissioning and demolition.

Download or read book A Flight Determination of the Tolerable Range of Effective Dihedral on a Conventional Fighter Airplane written by Charles J. Liddell and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conventional fighter airplane was equipped with a special device for varying the effective dihedral in flight. A survey of pilot's opinions was made to determine which values of effective dihedral were intolerable. The relation between the findings and the present Air Force-Navy stability and control specifications is discussed.

Book Synopsis Langley Full-scale-tunnel Investigation of the Fuselage Boundary Layer on a Typical Fighter Airplane with a Single Liquid-cooled Engine by : K. R. Czarnecki
Download or read book Langley Full-scale-tunnel Investigation of the Fuselage Boundary Layer on a Typical Fighter Airplane with a Single Liquid-cooled Engine written by K. R. Czarnecki and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been made in the Langley full-scale tunnel to determine the thickness and shape of profile of the boundary layer on the fuselage of a typical monoplane fighter airplane with a single liquid-cooled engine. The results showed that, for the range of angles of attack and fuselage stations investigated, the maximum displacement thickness was nearly 1.2 inches and was at the most rearward station (81.6 percent of the fuselage length). The displacement thickness was found to be greatly affected by the pressure gradients over the windshield-canopy combination and in the wing-fuselage juncture. An average value for the shape parameter between 1.3 and 1.4 was obtained for the turbulent boundary layer.
Book Synopsis Notes on the Stalling of Vertical Tail Surfaces and on Fin Design by : F. L. Thompson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may be concluded that the stalling of vertical tail surfaces is not in itself a dangerous condition. Provided sufficient directional stability exists at large angles of sideslip, the tail stall may occur with modern airplanes, as with those of the past, without the knowledge of or concern to the pilot.
