Book excerpt: Aerodynamic heat transfer rates to blunt 10 and 25 degree cones were measured using surface coatings which change phase at precisely known temperatures. Results from motion picture time-histories of the melting of the coatings on nylon and teflon models taken at Mach 10 and Re sub infinity D = 5600 are compared with earlier experiments on thin-skin models using a transient technique. The two methods agree within 5% at heating rate levels below 1 BTU/sq ft sec but show 25% deviations at levels about 2 BTU/sq ft sec. This error is attributed to the injection procedure which made determination of the exact moment of model insertion difficult. (Author).

Book excerpt: "Pressure and heat transfer data were obtained for hypersonic flows over 40-degree expansion corners and ahead of ramps. Full and partial span ramps, having wedge angles up to 90 degrees, were tested at two locations on a sharp leading edge flat plate, with and without end plates. Pressure data were obtained for [M sub infinity =] 5 for model length Reynolds numbers between 1.1 and 6.6 million. Both pressure and heat transfer data were obtained for [M sub infinity =] 8 for Reynolds numbers between 1.1 and 3.3 million." -- page iii, pt.4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Temperature Aspects of Hypersonic Flow is a record of the proceedings of the AGARD-NATO Specialists' Meeting, held at the Technical Centre for Experimental Aerodynamics, Rhode-Saint-Genese, Belgium in April 1962. The book contains the papers presented during the meeting that tackled a broad range of topics in the aspects of hypersonic flow. The subjects covered during the meeting include pressure measurements, interference effects, the use of wind tunnels in aircraft development testing, high temperature gas characteristics, boundary layer research, stability and control and the use of rocket vehicles in flight research. Aerospace engineers and aeronautical engineers will find the book invaluable.
Book Synopsis Low-density Stagnation-point Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Air Flow by : Charles F. Wittliff
Download or read book Low-density Stagnation-point Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Air Flow written by Charles F. Wittliff and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stagnation-point heat transfer to two- and three-dimensional bodies at low Reynolds numbers was studied to obtain hypersonic low-density data and to demonstrate the suitability of the hypersonic shock tunnel as a facility for research in rarefied gasdynamics. Low-density experiments on a transverse cylinder and a hemisphere cylinder were made in air at Mach numbers from 8.4 to 11.6 in the CAL 11- by 15-inch hypersonic shock tunnel. The stagnation pressure and temperature, as well as model diameter, were varied to obtain a range of Reynolds numbers from 11 to 1000, based on flow conditions behind the bow shock wave and model radius. The experimental heat-transfer rates are presented and compared with theoretical predictions. The data obtained with the transverse cylinders are in good agreement with continuum boundary-layer theory at all but the lowest Reynolds numbers and highest Knudsen numbers. The hemisphere-cylinder data indicated the presence of a significant vorticity-interaction effect. Good agreement with the theoretical analysis of H.K. Cheng accounting for this effect is indicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general introduction to fluid mechanics in the form of biographies and popular science. Based on the author’s extensive teaching experience, it combines natural science and human history, knowledge inheritance and cognition law to replace abstract concepts of fluid mechanics with intuitive and understandable physical concepts. In seven chapters, it describes the development of fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, experimental fluid dynamics, wind tunnel and water tunnel equipment, the mystery of flight and aerodynamic principles, and leading figures in fluid mechanics in order to spark beginners’ interest and allow them to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field’s development. It also provides a list of references for further study.
Book Synopsis Heat-transfer and Flow-field Tests of the McDonnell Douglas-Martin Marietta Space Shuttle Configurations by : Richard K. Matthews
Download or read book Heat-transfer and Flow-field Tests of the McDonnell Douglas-Martin Marietta Space Shuttle Configurations written by Richard K. Matthews and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerothermodynamic tests of Phase B space shuttle configurations proposed by McDonnell Douglas--Martin Marietta were conducted at Mach numbers 8 and 10.5. Test conditions provided both Mach number and Reynolds number simulation for typical ascent and reentry trajectories. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the major test results and also presents data comparisons with theoretical calculations. Specific areas covered are ascent heating and shock interference, booster reentry heating and flow fields, and orbiter reentry analysis which includes leeside heating, windward shock angles and flow fields, windward surface heating, and boundary-layer transition.
