Book excerpt: The Handbook of Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Design: Chemistry, Components, Types and Terminology,?Second Edition provides a clear and concise explanation of EV and Li-ion batteries for readers that are new to the field. The second edition expands and updates all topics covered in the original book, adding more details to all existing chapters and including major updates to align with all of the rapid changes the industry has experienced over the past few years. This handbook offers a layman's explanation of the history of vehicle electrification and battery technology, describing the various terminology and acronyms and explaining how to do simple calculations that can be used in determining basic battery sizing, capacity, voltage, and energy. By the end of this book the reader will have a solid understanding of the terminology around Li-ion batteries and be able to undertake simple battery calculations. The book is immensely useful to beginning and experienced engineers alike who are moving into the battery field. Li-ion batteries are one of the most unique systems in automobiles today in that they combine multiple engineering disciplines, yet most engineering programs focus on only a single engineering field. This book provides the reader with a reference to the history, terminology and design criteria needed to understand the Li-ion battery and to successfully lay out a new battery concept. Whether you are an electrical engineer, a mechanical engineer or a chemist, this book will help you better appreciate the inter-relationships between the various battery engineering fields that are required to understand the battery as an Energy Storage System. It gives great insights for readers ranging from engineers to sales, marketing, management, leadership, investors, and government officials. - Adds a brief history of battery technology and its evolution to current technologies? - Expands and updates the chemistry to include the latest types - Discusses thermal runaway and cascading failure mitigation technologies? - Expands and updates the descriptions of the battery module and pack components and systems?? - Adds description of the manufacturing processes for cells, modules, and packs? - Introduces and discusses new topics such as battery-as-a-service, cell to pack and cell to chassis designs, and wireless BMS?

Book excerpt: (Book). TASCAM: 30 Years of Recording Evolution is an informative, archival book devoted to the company's groundbreaking product line and the people who created it. Recalling the company's perennial leadership role in the music and pro audio industries ("firsts" include the 1/2-inch 8-track recorder, the Portastudio and the digital DA-88) with a glimpse towards the future, this book warmly portrays key past and present employees by re-visiting the landmark products they've built together since 1974. Quotes from respected musicians and producers who have trusted TASCAM gear for seminal recordings including Bo Diddley, Jim Keltner and Alan Parsons are sprinkled throughout this timeline-based book. Learn how TASCAM products changed the way musicians captured their ideas and empowered a new generation of songwriters and engineers. "Wow! The first classic piece of TASCAM gear I had was the first 4-track Portastudio. That thing allowed me to put so many classic P-Funk song ideas down that I can't even count 'em." Book excerpt: This book of the Publishing House of Sapienza University outlines the operative experience of a great number of nuclear power plants and devices of the nuclear fuel cycle. With main reference to nuclear plants of the so called third generation (Ill or Ill+, i.e. advanced ones) of the European Union and of Euratom research Centres the prospects of future plants of fourth generation (IV, years 2050s) are also described. Large advancements have been obtained by extended cooperation of EU with USA, Japan and connections with Russia, China, India, Canada and other Countries. After Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima-Daiichi (2011, 3 reactors) accidents with heavy consequences, people interest in nuclear energy decreased all over the world. This book examines in details such accidents to obtain safer designs Gen. IV reactors. In 2003 an initiative of the DOE (USA Department of Energy) launched the so called Generation IV International Forum with 13 Countries (USA, England, France, Canada, Japan, South Corea, South Africa, Argentine, Brasil, Switzerland, EU with Euratom) to design and realise the future reactors of Fourth Generation to substitute third generation reactors at the end of their operative life. Lectors have so a description of the evolution of future reactor types and of prospects that nuclear energy may offer to mankind. Maurizio Luigi Cumo is em. prof. of Nuclear Plants at the University of Rome Sapienza and is member of the Foundation Sapienza, Institution which gives prizes to Sapienza top students and may propose to Sapienza Administrative Council new researches to be undertaken. He was engaged in many international nuclear Institutions and Organisations. In years ‘80s he was engaged in the design of a small-medium reactor inherently safe called MARS (described in this book). Presently, he is in the group of senators and electors of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts of Salzburg, representing Italy, and is president of SIPS, the Historical (1839) Italian Society for the advancement of sciences.

Contributions range from humorous poems to deeply technical essays. The International Journal of Proof-of-Concept or Get The Fuck Out is a celebrated magazine of reverse engineering, retro-computing, and systems internals. This second collected volume holds all of the articles from releases nine to thirteen. Learn how to patch the firmware of a handheld amateur radio, then emulate that radio's proprietary audio code under Linux. How to slow the Windows kernel when exploiting a race condition and how to make a PDF file that is also an Android app, an audio file, or a Gameboy speedrun. How to hack a Wacom pen table with voltage glitching, then hack it again by pure software to read RDID tags from its surface. How to disassemble every last byte of an Atari game and how to bypass every classic form of copy protection on Apple ][. But above all else, beyond the nifty tricks and silly songs, this book exists to remind you what a clever engineer can build from a box of parts with a bit of free time. Not to show you what others have done, but to show you how they did it so that you can do the same.

Book excerpt: The book titled FRAC without a K is actually the third edition of the initial book written in 1985. I got the inspiration for the initial book , titled Stimulation Treatment handbook, form working with a young Engineer who was in distress because of cheating on frac treatments. The original book was designed to instruct personnel on how to oversee fracs-basically understand what was going on and what to expect from the service company. There was, sadly, felonious activity going on in the oilfield and I took it upon myself to do what I could to stop this behavior. The activity was pretty well eliminated when the very large lawsuit occurred between Parker and Parsley and BJ Services occurred in the late 80’s. Without going into details the lawsuit was settled for 270 million dollars which was a huge sum in the late 80’s. I have included the 1994 edition 2 to show the improvements and advances that have occurred in our industry in 27 years. I include the second edition to show where my mind might have changed but also to allow a younger generation to see where we came from. I placed a lot of emphasis on historical changes as well as discussing at length the waterfrac revolution. My very subjective comments on waterfracs, small sand and actual design of slick water treatments is indeed controversial but not to me. I can state there is nothing equivalent to this book in our industry. You can find books with massive amount of equations or sales pitch phenomena but nothing anywhere as readable as FRAC without a K. I have included hopefully for your enjoyment, war stories and pictures and descriptions of directional kill blowouts I have attended worldwide.
