Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 70 papers collected in this volume present an up to date review of the trends in heat pump technology. The heat pump is reviewed both as being part of a more comprehensive system, and as a refined device providing energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions. Its implementation in a system or process must be carefully considered at an early stage of design or development, and process integration is discussed in detail as a valuable tool for industry. The heat pump is proving to be a highly effective energy conserving tool, particularly when designed and used as an integral part of a system. Environmental benefits are gained when energy is conserved, and heat pumps can make a major contribution in this area. However, some heat pumps use working fluids which are environmentally unfriendly, and the progress that has been made in the field of alternative refrigerants is reported on. The volume will prove an indispensable reference source on the wide-ranging applications that have been developed since the last international conference, on such topics as heat pump field trials, pilot plants and development programmes.

Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that realizing the potential for energy conservation and diversification by using heat pumps offers considerable benefits to the environment. Important work on more efficient and ozone-friendly working fluids will further enhance the case for greater support of heat pump research. This book contains the Proceedings of the Third International Energy Agency Conference held in Tokyo in March 1990. The main theme of the Conference, 'Heat Pumps - Solving Energy and Environmental Challenges', is explained in great depth, covering not only technical characteristics but economic factors and the role of government and other bodies in promoting research, and the uses of all types of heat pumps are also fully considered. As well as publishing the papers presented at the meeting, the book also contains the extensive complementary poster sessions from the Conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the significance of using sustainable energy to prevent the deterioration of our planet using heat pumps. Energy sustainability can be achieved through improved energy efficiency. In this regard, heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative for heating and cooling. To drive the adoption of heat pumps as a key component of sustainable buildings, the authors focus on examining sustainable practices in heat pump operations and innovative system design. In view of the growing desire to use sustainable energy to meet heating and cooling demands and improve indoor air quality, this book offers a valuable reference guide to the available options in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) system design. To begin with, the authors define sustainable energy and discuss the trend of “thinking green” in building design. They then discuss sustainable practices and heat pump applications in mapping out HVAC systems. In turn, they examine the use of green operations to promote sustainable practices and, in order to highlight the importance of innovative design, discuss the configuration options and precision control aspects. In closing, the authors illustrate innovative sustainable design on the basis of several energy-efficient cases. The book’s main goal is to drive the adoption of sustainable energy solutions. Heat pumps, it argues, represent the most efficient system for meeting commercial/recreational/residential heating and cooling demands. The book not only examines industrial practices in heat pump application, but also discusses advanced heat pump technologies and innovative heat pump designs.

Book excerpt: Refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps (RACHP) have an important impact on the final energy uses of many sectors of modern society, such as residential, commercial, industrial, transport, and automotive. Moreover, RACHP also have an important environmental impact due to the working fluids that deplete the stratospheric ozone layer, which are being phased out according to the Montreal Protocol (1989). Last, but not least, high global working potential (GWP), working fluids (directly), and energy consumption (indirectly) are responsible for a non-negligible quota of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the atmosphere, thus impacting climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: In this paper, the principle of heat pumps will be looked at and discussed more in detail. Heat pumps can play an important role in the transformation towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, due to their ability to lift low-grade environmental heat with power to a temperature level useful in buildings. They are efficient in providing heat when implemented correctly and can also provide demand response. Thus, heat pumps are able to provide, compared to other heating systems, significant carbon savings that are even expected to rise further in the future. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption poses one of the major issues that has to be dealt with at present. National and international climate change objectives demand a significant reduction in all sectors Along with the increasing expectations of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these global targets are causing a change in our energy system. The demand for energy-efficient and cost-effective systems have risen due primarily to dwindling resources causing increasing energy costs. To deal with these issues, the focus shifts more and more towards phasing out fossil fuels and replacing them with electrical energy systems powered by renewable intermittent energy sources, such as sun and wind, to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. One way to heat buildings more efficiently is the use of a heat pump. Heat pumps have become popular in Germany, by now, over 1 million have been implemented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient energy management and effective conservation procedures have been very important considerations for our society for many years. An oil embargo in the 1970s and early 1980s brought about a new awareness of energy conservation. Because of various factors like loss of tax credits and efficiency standards imposed by the government, public interest dropped considerably in regard to energy conservation. A revival in energy conservation among the general public occurred following the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s. What does the 21st century hold? Conflicts in the Middle East, high prices for petroleum, and increasing population worldwide will all be significant influences on energy and its conservation. Considerable discussion of climate change, global warming, and increased concerns in regard to our electricity supply have provided motivation for building energy demand to be more flexible. Energy Management and Conservation, Fourth Edition, provides a very practical discussion of how energy can be managed and saved in most types of buildings. This edition not only updates the previous edition but adds updated content concerning energy cost reduction/going green to improve the environment. The authors of this book have written several books that use the systems approach. Through the use of the systems approach, the reader will be able to grasp how different parts of a building fit together to form a unit that uses energy efficiently. This text provides a thorough and practical discussion of the operation of systems that are found in most types of buildings. Each system is discussed with energy management and conservation in mind/going green to save money and improve the environment. There are many ways to manage a building to accomplish efficient energy conservation. Several of the chapters have checklists at the end to summarize ways of conserving energy that relate to the chapter. Important changes in this edition include coverage of governmental requirements from agencies such as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United States Department of Energy (USDOE), and American Society of Refrigerating, Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineering (ASHRAE), updated as of 2022 standards. Instrumentation updates include types of sensors and the concept of "smart" devices such as meters. Addition of computer building maintenance management systems and new updates for renewable energy resources are included. Enhancements to existing systems content (such as variable frequency drives for pumps) have been carefully added.

Book excerpt: This book contains the texts of the lectures which were givenat the Nato Advanced Study Institute on Advanced Heat Pumns which was heldat Espinho, Portugal in September 1980. Aprevious NATO Advanced Study Institute on the topic of heat pumps had been held in 1975. The significance of heat pumps with respect to energy conservation was the main topic of this Institute. In 1980it was felt that considerable research had to be done in order to be able to produce more energy efficient, less costly and more widely ap~licableheat ~umos. This requires a good understanding of the functioning of the types of heat pumps available. The simultaneous coverage of the basic funda mentals of heat pumps of different drive in one lecture series therefore was the goal of the 1980 Advanced Study Institute. Only a few lectures were devoted to heat pump applications. The lectures on heat pump applications were intended to ~ive only a short overview. They were supplemented by lectures on the latest developments on vapour compression as well as sorption systems.
