Book excerpt: Plasma temperatures in the ionosphere are fundamental indicators of the heat balance between the charged and neutral species and are associated with both the dynamics and structure of the upper atmosphere. At low and middle latitudes the temperatures are determined by solar energy inputs and energy exchange between charged particles and neutrals. During the daytime the thermal electrons are heated by photoelectrons and cooled by conduction and collisions with ions. The ions are heated principally by collisions with electrons and ions and cooled by conduction to lower altitudes. During the nighttime, when the source of photoionization is absent, both ions and electrons are cooled by conduction to lower altitudes where heat is lost to the neutral gas. Thus, variations in both electron temperature and ion temperatures can be used to explore the heat exchange processes in the topside ionosphere. A numerical model called Sami2 is Another Model of the Ionosphere (SAMI2) and measurements from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F15 satellite are used in this study of plasma temperatures in the topside ionosphere. The effects of ion composition on the ion and electron temperatures in the mid-latitude topside ionosphere during daytime are examined by using data that has been previously derived from the DMSP F15 measurements in 2004–2006. The heat exchanged between the different constituent ions and the role played by the solar zenith angle and the solar ionizing flux (F10.7) is suggested from the variations of electron and ion temperature with electron number density and composition. The SAMI2 model adds further interpretation of the electron and ion temperature distribution by capturing the major mechanisms that control the heat flow in the topside ionosphere at middle latitudes. Due to the absence of constituent ion temperature information in the original DMSP dataset, this model study is also used to retrieve both TH+ and TO+ and verify the observed dependence of ion temperature on ion composition. The model calculation shows that topside TH+ should reside between TO+ and Te, and further confirms the preferential heat transfer from the electrons to H+ in the topside. Finally, an implementation of a more sophisticated analysis procedure to extract constituent ion temperatures from the Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA) measurements is utilized to reexamine the DMSP F15 dataset. The result shows that in the daytime, when electrons are actively heated, TH+ is a few hundred degrees higher than TO+ at all longitudes. The nighttime temperature difference between TH+ and TO+ is indicative of mass dependent adiabatic heating and cooling processes across the equatorial region. These adiabatic processes present clear longitudinal variations in the ion temperatures and measured plasma flows that are associated with season and magnetic declination.

Book excerpt: The aim of this research is the determination of the structure and variation of the topside ionosphere at mid-latitudes during the sunrise period, based on electron-density measurements obtained with the aid of Alouette I, the Canadian topside-sounder satellite. Electron-density profiles obtained from Alouette I soundings recorded at various North American stations provide the basis for the determination of the scale-height of the electron-density distribution profiles. The scale-heights profiles, with proper physical assumptions, are interpreted in terms of the combined ion and electron temperatures and the relative ion concentration in the altitude range of 450 to 750 km. Book excerpt: Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System provides a systematic understanding of Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere dynamics. Cross-scale coupling has become increasingly important in the Space Physics community. Although large-scale processes can specify the averaged state of the system reasonably well, they cannot accurately describe localized and rapidly varying structures in space in actual events. Such localized and variable structures can be as intense as the large-scale features. This book covers observations on quantifying coupling and energetics and simulation on evaluating impacts of cross-scale processes. It includes an in-depth review and summary of the current status of multi-scale coupling processes, fundamental physics, and concise illustrations and plots that are usable in tutorial presentations and classrooms. Organized by physical quantities in the system, Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System reviews recent advances in cross-scale coupling and energy transfer processes, making it an important resource for space physicists and researchers working on the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. Describes frontier science and major science around M-I-T coupling, allowing for foundational understanding of this emerging field in space physics Reviews recent and key findings in the cutting-edge of the science Discusses open questions and pathways for understanding how the field is evolving

Book excerpt: In 2010, NASA and the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assemble a committee of experts to develop an integrated national strategy that would guide agency investments in solar and space physics for the years 2013-2022. That strategy, the result of nearly 2 years of effort by the survey committee, which worked with more than 100 scientists and engineers on eight supporting study panels, is presented in the 2013 publication, Solar and Space Physics: A Science for a Technological Society. This booklet, designed to be accessible to a broader audience of policymakers and the interested public, summarizes the content of that report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has long been fascinated by the planet Mars. Was its climate ever conducive to life? What is the atmosphere like today and why did it change so dramatically over time? Eleven spacecraft have successfully flown to Mars since the Viking mission of the 1970s and early 1980s. These orbiters, landers and rovers have generated vast amounts of data that now span a Martian decade (roughly eighteen years). This new volume brings together the many new ideas about the atmosphere and climate system that have emerged, including the complex interplay of the volatile and dust cycles, the atmosphere-surface interactions that connect them over time, and the diversity of the planet's environment and its complex history. Including tutorials and explanations of complicated ideas, students, researchers and non-specialists alike are able to use this resource to gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this most Earth-like of planetary neighbours.

Book excerpt: Natural hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis, have threatened human communities throughout recorded history. Scientists still face a long-term challenge to reveal the natural hazards' preparation process and precisely predict their occurrences. With space technology development, in the early 1980s, some satellites recorded abnormal electromagnetic emissions, plasma density irregularities, and energetic particle precipitations over active seismic fault zones, volcanic belts, or tsunamis coast. Since then, continuous efforts have been paid to the rock-rupture-processing experiment, ground-space comparative studies. Especially for earthquake science, the electromagnetic precursors might be the most promising tool for the short-term (timescale of hours, days, and weeks) earthquake prediction. In late 2004, France launched the DEMETER (Detection of Electromagnetic (EM) Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions) satellite, which successfully operated from 2004 to 2010. In Febr. 2018, China launched the first seismo-electromagnetism satellite (China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, CSES) aimed for earthquake monitoring from space.
