Book Synopsis The Lives of Bees by : Thomas D. Seeley
Download or read book The Lives of Bees written by Thomas D. Seeley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeley, a world authority on honey bees, sheds light on why wild honey bees are still thriving while those living in managed colonies are in crisis. Drawing on the latest science as well as insights from his own pioneering fieldwork, he describes in extraordinary detail how honey bees live in nature and shows how this differs significantly from their lives under the management of beekeepers. Seeley presents an entirely new approach to beekeeping--Darwinian Beekeeping--which enables honey bees to use the toolkit of survival skills their species has acquired over the past thirty million years, and to evolve solutions to the new challenges they face today. He shows beekeepers how to use the principles of natural selection to guide their practices, and he offers a new vision of how beekeeping can better align with the natural habits of honey bees.
Book Synopsis Biodynamic Beekeeping by : Matthias Thun
Download or read book Biodynamic Beekeeping written by Matthias Thun and published by Floris Books. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern beekeeping, influenced by new technologies and breeding methods, has increased honey production but left bee colonies weak and vulnerable to disease. With the alarming decline of the bee population raising concerns about an impending ecological crisis, many beekeepers are seeking a more sustainable way of caring for bees. Biodynamic Beekeeping is the first book to offer practical instruction on caring for bees using biodynamic theories and methods. By considering the influence of the movement of the stars and the planets on the bees' natural habits, biodynamics encourages beekeepers to be more in tune with their bees indicating, for example, the best days on which to inspect colonies or gather honey. This fascinating book offers beekeepers detailed advice and instruction on how to work more holistically, including: the challenges and advantages of breeding queen bees how to artificially induce swarming to propagae colonies how to use biodynamic ashing techniques to combat varroa mites instructions for making winter-feed according to current biodynamic thinking
Book Synopsis Beekeeping with Zest by : Bill Summers
Download or read book Beekeeping with Zest written by Bill Summers and published by . This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bee Keeping with ZEST by Bill Summers This is a book like no other on the subject of honey bees. It addresses the author s belief and that of his colleague (Dave Durrant) that the welfare of honey bees in a traditional hive fails to provide for their needs as biological systems. This realisation led to the design of the ZEST hive which does do so. It deploys a longitudinal external envelope, with top bee entry and trickle ventilation, made from lightweight insulated building blocks and plastic lattice frames within which the bees draw out their wild honeycomb. The former is DIY from builders merchants and the latter available in boxes of 12. The external envelope is not just a lightweight insulated one, but is sufficiently heavy to provide the bees with a thermal lag of an envelope that is easily thermo-regulated to 35deg, the fundamental requirement of their brood. From the honey bee perspective the ZEST hive overcomes all the problems of other hive designs and frame types. An unintended consequence of the ZEST hive design has been to eliminate varroa. The ZEST is functionally free of it. This is witnessed by the hive debris. The cause seems to be the smaller natural cell size and natural warmth of the hive envelope, both of which speed the biological process of honey bee pupation. The time available for the varroa to mature in the pupating cells is reduced. Their numbers fall to zero rather than rises exponentially. This book and its thesis will prove to be seminal in the drive to solve the problems of honey bee health in all its aspects and manifestations. There has been a recent doubling of beekeepers in the country caused by the ecologically minded seeking to assist honey bees in a better environment. This can be applauded. This book is to assist them and their bees. The ZEST hive is democratic. Anyone can have one. It is cheap, appropriate and amenable to a more self-sufficient way of life. It is a living sustainable system, not a product. It can be entirely D.I.Y. No one owns it. It can be free. Take it. Use it. Have fun. The ZEST hive does a great deal more with a great deal less.

Book excerpt: Dear reader, in front of you, is the second edition of the book. It is not like any other beekeeping book. This is not a textbook or a practical guide in the usual interpretation. In this little book, I have outlined only the most important findings based on my learnings and experiences. The ones that, in my opinion, helped my bees and me find happiness in life. The information contained in the book will be useful for both experienced and novice beekeepers. Everyone will discover for themselves interesting "goodies". For instance: the way I have changed the quality of bees life, the way I have protected them from exposure to electrical fields, and what methods of Varroa mite fight I applied to. Among other things, you will learn my completely new method of dividing the family of bees into two equal parts without losing the bees flying for a nectar (flight bees). You will learn how I harvest honey, how I brew a tasty and useful feed for bees, how and where I place hives and a lot of other practical information, which is important not only for bees but also can become a business springboard for the enterprising reader...Besides all this, I suggest an unusual idea, an unusual reason for conducting beekeeping. This idea is fundamentally changing the relationship between beekeeper and bee, filling their relationship with mutual love and respect. Gives the beekeeper an opportunity to feel involved in bee magic. Fills beekeeper heart with meaning and the joy of being alive. This feeling warms the heart and pleases the soul. And this wonderful sensation can settle in your heart as well. This is beautiful, isn't it?!I believe that when this idea prevails among beekeepers, our world, our Earth as a whole will be happier and kinder.I will be elated if my practical findings prove to be useful and will bring prosperity to you and your bees. The more cheerful bees are, the more harmony and love occur in our World. Make your bees glad and join with them in a Song of Love and a Song of Joy.Welcome to my Happy Bees. What's new in this edition? Two new chapters were added in the book: about my new method of splitting the bees' family and about my method the fight against Varroa Mite. Download or read book Buzz written by Thor Hanson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on PBS's American Spring LIVE, the award-winning author of The Triumph of Seeds and Feathers presents a natural and cultural history of bees: the buzzing wee beasties that make the world go round. Bees are like oxygen: ubiquitous, essential, and, for the most part, unseen. While we might overlook them, they lie at the heart of relationships that bind the human and natural worlds. In Buzz, the beloved Thor Hanson takes us on a journey that begins 125 million years ago, when a wasp first dared to feed pollen to its young. From honeybees and bumbles to lesser-known diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They've given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers, and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing. As informative and enchanting as the waggle dance of a honeybee, Buzz shows us why all bees are wonders to celebrate and protect. Read this book and you'll never overlook them again.

Download or read book Bad Beekeeping written by Ron Miksha and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A million pounds of honey. Produced by a billion bees! This memoir reconstructs the life of a young man from Pennsylvania as he drops into the bald prairie badlands of southern Saskatchewan. He buys a honey ranch and keeps the bees that make the honey. But he also spends winters in Florida swamps, nurse-maid to ten thousand dainty queen bees. From the dusty Canadian prairie to the thick palmetto swamps of the American south, the reader meets with simple folks who shape the protagonist's character - including a Cree rancher with three sons playing NHL hockey, a Hutterite preacher who yearns to roam the globe, a reclusive bee-eating homesteader, and a grey-headed widow who grows grapefruit, plays a nasty game of scrabble, and lives with four vicious dogs. Encompassing a ten-year period, this true story evolves from the earnest inexperience of the young man as he learns an art and builds a business. Carefully researched natural biology runs counterpoint to human social activities. Bee craft serves as the setting for expositions that contrast American and Canadian lifestyles, while exemplifying the harsh reality of a man working with and against the physical environment.
